The Bad and the Beautiful: A Screenplay, by Charles Schnee

In 1952, Charles Schnee won the Best Screenplay Oscar for The Bad and the Beautiful, the story of a Hollywood producer who is part genius, part louse.

Based loosely on Gone with the Wind producer David O. Selznick and played by Kirk Douglas, Schnee’s protagonist is producer Jonathan Shields, who desperately needs the help of three enemies from his past to make a comeback. Schnee presents the story through a series of flashbacks in which the three—director Fred Amiel (Barry Sullivan), actress Georgia Lorrison (Lana Turner), and writer James Lee Bartlow (Dick Powell)—describe their relationships with Shields.

Nominated for six Academy Awards and winner of five, The Bad and the Beautiful unfolds against the background of the movie industry of the 1930s and 1940s, as producer John Houseman points out in his foreword to this filmscript. In addition to the final script and Houseman’s foreword, Matthew J. Bruccoli has provided the original ending to the screenplay and Anne F. Hardin’s discussion of the David Raksin score that was used in the film and of adding music to film in general. The Bradshaw short story, "Memorial to a Bad Man," is also included in this volume.

The 28 essays reprinted here are arranged in four sections that offer theoretical, historical, educational, and community perspectives on the whole topic of literacy. In addition to their substantial introduction, the editors provide an exhaustive bibliography based on the citations to the essays.

Kintgen, Kroll, and Rose see literacy as an extremely complex area of inquiry in which all aspects are interrelated, and they hope to avoid creating or perpetuating false boundaries within the field.

The book’s first section contains articles dealing with various psychological and economic consequences of literacy. The second provides an introduction to the development of literacy in different eras of the West, from its inception among the Greeks to the teaching of it in North America during the past century. The third section treats the teaching of literacy in educational institutions, primarily at the secondary and post-secondary levels. The final section discusses literacy outside the traditional classroom: the development of literacy among children and adults, the functions and uses of literacy in the workplace and elsewhere, and the identity and problems of those who have not mastered literacy skills.

Archie Bunker's America: TV in an Era of Change 1968-1978, by Josh Ozersky

Archie Bunker’s America discerns what was “in the air” as television networks tried to accommodate cultural and political swings in America from the Vietnam era through the late 1970s. Josh Ozersky’s spirited examination of the ways America changed television during a period of intense social upheaval, recuperation, and fragmentation uncovers a bold and beguiling facet of American cultural history. From the conflict-based comedy of All in the Family and such post-sixties frolics as Three’s Company to tendentiously apolitical programs like Happy Days, Ozersky describes the range and power of television to echo larger schemes of American life.

Around 1968, advertisers who were anxious to break into the lucrative baby-boomer demographic convinced television networks to begin to abandon prime-time programming that catered to universal audiences. With the market splintering, networks ventured into more issue-based and controversial territories. While early network attempts at more “relevant” programming failed, Ozersky examines how CBS struck gold with the political comedy All in the Family in 1971 and how other successful, conflict-based comedies turned away from typical show business conventions. As the 1970s wore on, the innovations of the previous years began to lose their public appeal. After Vietnam and Watergate, Ozersky argues, Americans were exhausted from the political turbulence of the preceding decade and were ready for a televisual “return to normalcy.”

Straightforward, engaging, and liberally illustrated, Archie Bunker’s America is peppered with the stories of outsider cops and failed variety shows, of a young Bill Murray and an old Ed Sullivan, of Mary Tyler Moore, Fonzie, and the Skipper, too. Drawing on interviews with television insiders, trade publications, and the programs themselves, Ozersky chronicles the ongoing attempts of prime-time television to program for a fragmented audience—an audience whose greatest common denominator, by 1978, may well have been the act of watching television itself. The book also includes a foreword by renowned media critic Mark Crispin Miller and an epilogue of related commentary on the following decades.

Review
“Josh Ozersky’s study is important both for the new light it sheds on an extraordinary moment in the history of TV and for its illumination also of the moment when, arguably, the current phase of U.S. cultural history began. For TV’s postapocalyptic move to depoliticize the spirit of the Sixties marked the onset of the culture of TV that floods our consciousness today.”—Mark Crispin Miller, from the Foreword

About the Author
Josh Ozersky writes frequently on American cultural history for Newsday, the Washington Post, History: Review of New Books, Tikkun, Business 2.0, and other periodicals. He is the author of Readings for the 21st Century and has contributed to the Oxford Dictionary of American Biography.

On TV programming, circa 1968 . . .

"The Neilsen top ten of 1968 thus consisted of three pastoral comedies, two westerns, a liver-spotted handful of aging star vehicles, and a pair of ludicrous sitcoms—one about two cute children in the care of an English valet, and the other about a housewife with magic powers. The proverbial viewer from outer space, receiving these broadcasts a billion years hence in his recliner in the Crab Nebula, would infer from them only the most ephemeral of social problems."

On Bill Murray . . .

"Bill Murray was a master of the poker-faced, knowing expression—the guy who never really meant what he said, and around whose every utterance invisible quotation marks hovered. Murray took this part even farther than Chase had, and in the process created a cultural style which has yet to be eradicated from our culture. Whenever a David Letterman pointedly mouths a trite, empty phrase (‘from the home office in Scottsdale, Arizona’); whenever some sitcom rebel in dark sunglasses assures a traffic court judge or detention monitor that ‘I truly regret what I’ve done’; whenever two people in conversation fall into what author Douglas Coupland called ‘telethonese’—unctuous phrases like ‘you’re beautiful,’ ‘I love this guy,’ ‘what a nut,’ etc.—Bill Murray’s wings beat overhead."

On Archie Bunker . . .

"Archie Bunker is a creature of the past, lingering into the present as an unquiet spirit, a ghost of the era that created him. Norman Lear knows that. You and I, the audience, know it. Mike and Gloria know it. Even Edith, for all of her servility, knows it. The only one who doesn’t know it is Archie, and it is this very indomitability that elevates him above traditional TV heavies and bigots. They ‘learn their lesson’ at the end of every episode. That Archie never learns his lesson is the source of his great iconic power. He was the Sisyphus of the hardhats, constantly attempting to roll Meathead, Gloria, Edith, Norman Lear, his neighbors, the scriptwriters, and the political climate of the sixties generally back up the hill of vanished time."

On the TV superhero . . .

"The 70s superhero was young, laid-back, and frisky, and tended to eschew violence—another aftereffect of the Family Hour. The Incredible Hulk, for example, was a sensitive, thoughtful scientist wandering from town to town and helping people help themselves—until they got in too tight a spot for self-esteem to rescue them; then he would turn into a green-skinned monster, also sensitive, who would throw his opponents harmlessly into barrels or stacked cans of soup."

On Three’s Company . . .

"Sociologically speaking, Mr. and Mrs. Roper are the most interesting thing on television during this period. For one thing, the Ropers are meant to stand for all of the worst characteristics of pre-sixties, unliberated America. Mr. Roper is a dirty-minded prude. Predictably, he is impotent, a fact which accounts for nearly all of Mrs. Roper’s lines (‘You’re not in a rising market.’ ‘Neither are you.’). Mrs. Roper is more sympathetic; she knows Jack’s secret, and, although unable to enjoy the salvation of Charles Reich’s America, with its new freedom and honesty, she is not so benighted as to begrudge it to the younger generation."

On Kung Fu . . .

"Kwai Chang Caine solves everybody’s problems, much as all wandering western heroes do, but he is clearly too good for the land he is in. These are the kind of people that would set fire to huts, and do. Kung Fu summed up in one gratifying package American self-loathing, the sixties’ infatuation with the orient, and the characteristically American desire to have the best of both worlds: Caine is a pacifist as pure as Gandhi or Daniel Berrigan, but he can kick anybody’s ass, and does."

a tour-de-force survey of the 70s
By Dr. Severin
If you love the 70s, especially all the great cheesy TV shows of the time, this books is for you. It's super smart and funny, as the author, Josh Osersky, takes you on a guided tour of the times, and how shows like Three's Company and the Love Boat tell us the true story of America in the 70s. One of the best books I ever read!!!!

a stand alone fiction
By Mr. C. J. Hill
this is one of a the very few pieces of media on the subject of ninjutsu that is written by an authority on the subject. I was fascinated to find that Stephen K. Hayes is such an excellent writer in fiction as well as non fiction.
All of the characters had depth, the plot was excellent & the writing style was captivating also. This is a book that can be enjoyed by anyone that likes thriller or action novels.

A great fictional depiction of the ninja.
By Keith L. Goode
Stephen K. Hayes has done what so many other authors and screen writers have failed to do -- he's managed to tell a compelling story about the ninja without raising them to the level of mythic beings or dropping them to the level of incompetent street thugs.
It's really too bad that this book went out of publication, especially since Ninjamania rubbish, like the movie "9 Death of the Ninja," is still in circulation. I'm not saying that this is the best book I've every read, but compared to Sho Kosugi's completely inaccurate portrayals of the ninja, this book is a masterpiece.
If you can find this book ANYWHERE, you truly need to purchase it, new or used or in a file folder on loose-leaf paper. It took me about 6 months to find, and I'm extremely satisfied with the purchase.
The storyline flows very well, and Mr. Hayes offers a unique perspective of the traditional views of good and evil, antagonist and protagonist.
The only weakness I can see in this book, which may in part account for its lack of current publication, is that any reader without some cursory knowledge of ninjutsu and its terminology may be easily confused. At times, especially in the combat scenes, the reader really needs to have a grasp on what the significance of each strike is.
Otherwise, this is the kind of book the ninja community needs more of, now that we've had time to recover from the Ninjamania of the 80's. Great job, Mr. Hayes!! Gambatte!

On Broadway: Art and Commerce on the Great White Way, by Professor Steven Adler

At a critical, transitional moment in the history of Broadway—and, by extension, of American theatre itself—former Broadway stage manager Steven Adler enlists insider perspectives from sixty-six practitioners and artists to chronicle the recent past and glimpse the near future of the Great White Way. From marquee names to behind-the-scenes power brokers, Adler has assembled a distinctly knowledgeable cast of theatre’s elite, including Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Laurents, Des McAnuff, Frank Rich, Robin Wagner, Rocco Landesman, Robert Longbottom, Todd Haimes, Bernard Gersten, and Alan Eisenberg.

On Broadway: Art and Commerce on the Great White Way spotlights the differing vantage points of performers, artists, writers, managers, producers, critics, lawyers, theatre owners, union leaders, city planners, and other influential players. Each details his or her firsthand account of the creative and economic forces that have wrought extraordinary changes in the way Broadway theatre is conceived, produced, marketed, and executed. Once the paramount site of American theatre, Broadway today is becoming a tourist-driven, family-friendly, middle-class entertainment oasis in Midtown, an enterprise inextricably bound to the larger mosaic of national and international professional theatre.

Accounting for this transformation and presaging Broadway’s identity for the twenty-first century, Adler and his interviewees assess the impact of the advent of corporate producers, the ascendance of not-for-profit theatres on Broadway, and the growing interdependence between regional and Broadway productions. Also critiqued are the important roles of the radical urban redevelopment staged in Times Square and the changing demographics and appetites of contemporary theatre audiences in New York and around the globe.

Actors and administrators, performers and producers, theatre students and theatregoers will all benefit from the perceptive insights in this authoritative account of theatre making for the new millennium.

Review
“Comprehensive, substantive, and thoughtful, On Broadway is the best book on producing I’ve ever read. Adler’s knowledge of the contemporary theatre scene (not-for-profit and commercial, regional and Broadway) is impressive. Winning interviews with some of the luminaries in this volume would have been admirable; to have had conversations with all of them is exceptional.”—Barbara W. Grossman, chair of the Department of Drama and Dance, Tufts University

“On Broadway is well organized and wonderfully readable, providing invaluable personal insights about the Broadway stage. Excellent questions, excellent choice of subjects.”—Saul Elkin, Distinguished Service Professor of Theatre, SUNY Buffalo

excellent, insightful book on Broadway producing
By Broadway worker
This is a remarkable book. I have read many books about the Broadway theatre world, but this is that rare book that combines extraordinary research and scholarship with vivid, involving prose and a truly insightful, erudite analysis of the elements that make up the Broadway producing world today. This kind of intelligent, scholarly book (without post-modern lingo) is a rarity these days. Adler's ability to conceptualize and analyze in a manner that is logical and clear is always engrossing. This is the perfect book for those who work in theatre, those who love theatre, and those who are studying theatre. A rare and remarkable achievement. I learned a tremendous amount about today's Broadway theatre world. This is the first book I have come across that truly explains all the elements that make up Broadway producing today.

Prairie Albion: An English Settlement in Pioneer Illinois (Shawnee Classics), by Dr. Charles Boewe Ph.D.

Originally published in 1962, this story of the English Settlement in pioneer Illinois is compiled from the eyewitness accounts of the participants. The founders, Morris Birkbeck and George Flower, as well as their associates and the many visitors to their prairie settlement, wrote mainly for immediate and sometimes controversial ends. Charles Boewe has selected excerpts from letters, descriptions, diaries, histories, and periodicals within a chronological framework to emphasize the implicit drama of the settlers' deeds as they searched for a suitable site, founded their colony, and augmented their forces with new arrivals from England. No less dramatic is the subsequent estrangement of the two founders, the disillusionment of many of the English settlers, the untimely death of Birkbeck, and the financial ruin of Flower.

Review

"'No man, since Columbus, has done so much toward peopling America as Mr. Birkbeck, whose publications, and the authority of whose name, had effects truly prodigious,' was the exaggerated estimate of William Faux, an English traveler and recorder of impressions gained from an American journey in 1819. This is but one of the many sprightly observations with which the commentator-editor-collector, Charles Boewe, enlivens his account as he describes the ambitious attempt by Morris Birkbeck and George Flower, themselves successful English farmers, to establish a settlement of farmers and artisans in a kind of 'Prairie Albion' on the Illinois frontier after 1817. In a series of nine chapters Birkbeck and Flower speak for themselves to the accompaniment of a supporting cast of family members, neighbors, and western travelers. The selections from quite variant sources are skillfully woven into a delightful narrative by the editor. . . . The presence of those who made up the settlement in southeastern Illinois exerted an influence on the early history of the state far out of proportion to their number, and their experiences constitute a significant and revealing account of pioneering in perhaps its first encounter with a midwestern prairie environment."—American Historical Review

Wonderful Book
By Clifton C. Hawkins
I cannot speak too highly of this work. In 1817, two men established an English settlement in what was then still Illinois Territory; their aspirations, adventures, dissensions, and achievements are recounted in scintillating prose. The trials and tribulations of a planned community, life on the frontier, early [white] life on the Great Plains, and the beginnings of uproars over slavery [which was almost legalized in Illinois right after it became a state] are recounted here. Colorful, intriguing, and at times hilarious episodes fill this book [the "I wish you would fall a snake or two" story on pp. 184-5 still has me in stitches]. The things that have gone on in this world are simply amazing; and this story of the Old Northwest both illuminates major themes characterizing its time and place, and adds details, incidents, and thoughts, that will remain forever unique. Long before I finished this book I was anticipating reading some of the first-hand accounts by people who come alive in Boewe's account. Only the prospect of finding out more reconciled me to finishing this book.

Harry Truman and Civil Rights: Moral Courage and Political Risks, by Adjunct Professor Michael Gardner

Given his background, President Truman was an unlikely champion of civil rights. Where he grew up—the border state of Missouri—segregation was accepted and largely unquestioned. Both his maternal and paternal grandparents had owned slaves, and his mother, victimized by Yankee forces, railed against Abraham Lincoln for the remainder of her ninety-four years. When Truman assumed the presidency on April 12, 1945, Michael R. Gardner points out, Washington, DC, in many ways resembled Cape Town, South Africa, under apartheid rule circa 1985.

Truman’s background notwithstanding, Gardner shows that it was Harry Truman—not Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, or John F. Kennedy—who energized the modern civil rights movement, a movement that basically had stalled since Abraham Lincoln had freed the slaves. Gardner recounts Truman’s public and private actions regarding black Americans. He analyzes speeches, private conversations with colleagues, the executive orders that shattered federal segregation policies, and the appointments of like-minded civil rights activists to important positions. Among those appointments was the first black federal judge in the continental United States.

One of Gardner’s essential and provocative points is that the Frederick Moore Vinson Supreme Court—a court significantly shaped by Truman—provided the legal basis for the nationwide integration that Truman could not get through the Congress. Challenging the myth that the civil rights movement began with Brown v. Board of Education under Chief Justice Earl Warren, Gardner contends that the life-altering civil rights rulings by the Vinson Court provided the necessary legal framework for the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision.

Gardner characterizes Truman’s evolution from a man who grew up in a racist household into a president willing to put his political career at mortal risk by actively supporting the interests of black Americans.

From Library Journal
Attorney Gardner, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, crafts a persuasive brief to argue that Harry Truman was the 20th century's best president in terms of civil rights the true successor to the Great Emancipator. His provincial Missouri background notwithstanding, Truman was influenced by his World War II experiences and voracious reading to become a presidential champion of human rights. Gardner cites Truman's American human rights "firsts," among them that he was the first president to accept an invitation from the NAACP and the first to have an integrated inaugural in segregated Washington, DC. Truman sustained his human rights record throughout his seven-year presidency, naming the first African American to the federal bench, ending segregation in the armed forces and the federal civil service, opening the capital's public swimming pools to black families in 1950, and delivering the 1953 Howard University commencement address. More problematic is the author's argument that Truman's Supreme Court appointees especially Chief Justice Fred Vinson and Tom Clark laid judicial groundwork for the famous Brown v. Board of Education decision. Here, Gardner's assessment contradicts prevailing scholarly consensus. Regardless of who is right on this point, however, Gardner's first book is highly recommended for all libraries. William D. Pederson, Louisiana State Univ. in Shreveport

Review

“Gardner, a practicing lawyer and [former] adjunct professor at Georgetown University, sets the record straight on the part that our thirty-third president played in the struggle for racial equality. His well-documented conclusions will astonish even many of those whose memories go back to the period of which he writes.”

—New York Law Journal

“[A] compelling account of Truman as a civil rights advocate because it was the right—not politically expedient—position for America following World War II. . . Harry Truman—the lifelong civil rights activist—cared for and was admired by not only the common citizens but also the forgotten ones.”—ForeWord

“[A] persuasive brief to argue that Harry Truman was the 20th century’s best president in terms of civil rights—the true successor to the Great Emancipator. . . . Gardner’s first book is highly recommended.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“Harry Truman and Civil Rights is an exceptional read. This book will reaffirm Truman’s position as an important figure in the African American quest for equality.”—The Baltimore Afro-American

“This is truly a remarkable book. I doubt that anybody in the instant history business like myself fully understood that the bedrock of Harry Truman was human rights. Nuclear weapons, Greek-Turkish aid, Marshall plan, Berlin airlift were all acquired tastes, imposed on him by a world running madly at warp speed. But beneath everything, as Gardner notes, was the feeling rooted in his soul that all humans regardless of color, race, or creed deserved equal treatment.”

—Hugh Sidey, Chair and CEO of the White House Historical Association

“Harry Truman and Civil Rights presents a riveting account of the little-known, yet pivotal role President Harry Truman played in the cause for civil rights. . . . President Truman’s bravery and dogged determination opened many doors and forever changed the course of history. This book is a tribute to the visionary courage displayed by this statesman who began laying the foundation to right the horrific injustices that prevailed against people of color during his time.”

—Kweisi Mfume, NAACP President and CEO

“This book tells the story of a native son of Missouri who put everything at risk to achieve a moral good. Truman’s very personal crusade for civil rights divided his party, alienated the South, and nearly cost him his presidency. His moral courage is an example for all elected officials and a lesson for all Americans.”                   —Missouri Senator Jean Carnahan

“Harry Truman’s convictions, commitment, and courage are admirably recounted by Michael Gardner. He describes the actions that flowed from them. He recalls long overlooked actions taken by the Department of Justice at Truman’s direction. He pointedly contrasts Truman’s courage with the timidity of his two immediate successors and reminds us of the belated conversion of Lyndon Johnson to the course Truman had advocated years earlier. . . .Truman had the courage. He took the risks. All of us are indebted to him.”—George M. Elsey, administrative assistant to President Truman

Reassessing the civil rights record of America's 33rd President
By T. Washington
Although most observers note his 1948 executive order ordering the integration of the US armed forces and tend to leave it at that, Michael Gardner goes farther and notes that despite Truman's having grown up in a turn of 19th century American Midwest household to parents both of whom whose ancestors owned slaves and his occasional slides into prejudice( such as his snickering at the "coons" amongst the White House servants), he had arguably helped kick start th civil rights movements in the post war US. To use the title of a book published by his future successor John F. Kennedy , he, even more so than FDR- and WAY more so than his successor Dwight D. Eisenhower- he was a "profile in courage". Full disclosure: to his credit, "Ike" DID send troops to Little Rock Arkansas in 1957 in order to enforce a US Supreme Court desegregation ruling, but there are many differing forms of courage and whilst Eisenhower may have been brave on the battlefield, when it came to firstly McCarthyism and then civil rights for African Americans, to my mind, he was a rank coward! If the US Presidency is to mean anything, to quote Theodore Roosevelt, it is"ultimately a bully pulpit for moral leadership" and Truman, unlike Eisenhower seems to have grasped this instinctively just as FDR did in facing down the "economic royalists" and then the isolationists.
All in all, a reassessment of a President whose role in securing equal justice for African Americans is often overlooked. My only complaint about Gardner's work is that he gives too LITTLE credit for his predecessor FDR in this respect( albeit due to the prodding of his wife Eleanor.) and whose labours arguably helped set the stage for Barack Obama's successful bid for the Presidency(wonder what Truman- or "Ike" would have made of Obama!_

Informative But In Dire Need of Editing
By Damon Kessler
In reading Gardner's book, I learned a lot about Truman's impressive record as a civil rights advocate during his tenure as president. Gardner presents more than ample evidence to support his thesis that HST demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to Black civil rights, despite weak (white) public interest in this issue and the political risks of alienating a powerful block of Dixiecrats. He is successful in describing the many facets of racism -- rigid segregation, voter intimidation, lynching, all-white juries, etc. -- that African Americans encountered as they returned home after presumably fighting for 'freedom and democracy' in WWII. Truman, he aptly shows, refused to ignore the glaring contradiction between U.S. ideals and practices, and understood that racism on the home front undermined the country's foreign policy goals.

Gardner is, however, so preoccupied with establishing HST as a moral and courageous leader that he tends to neglect elements of Truman's social and political environment that made it possible for him to advance a civil rights agenda and indeed, get elected in 1948 against all the odds. For example, there WAS a legacy of Black resistance to oppression by this time... and not just the nascent stirrings of a civil rights movement to which Gardner alludes. Marvey Garvey had fired the imaginations and aspirations of tens of thousands of Blacks with the organziation of the UNIA. The NAACP was well-established and published The Crisis under the editorship of W.E.B. DuBois. Langston Hughes offered up brilliant poetry and fiction that touched on the sting of Black experience in a racist America. Billie Holiday recorded the haunting song about lynching, "Strange Fruit." And of course, there were liberal Euro-Americans who genuinely believed in racial equality and human rights, just as Truman did. There is no way he could have pulled off his victory in the 1948 election without deep connections to and alliances with moderate and liberal supporters.

Gardner points out that Truman's hands were tied by Republicans and conservative Democrats in Congress when it came to passing civil rights legislation. Instead, the president showed great political savvy by using his Executive Order powers (as he did when he desegregated the armed services) and appointing like-minded friends to the courts. One was Fred Vinson, who became Truman's chief justice and presided over a handful of Supreme Courts cases that laid the groundwork for the Brown vs. Board of Education decision in 1954. Gardner provides a compelling description of these cases in Chapter 11, "Truman and the Vinson Court."

This book does have one major flaw, and a couple reviewers have made reference to it. Gardner repeats himself ad naseum, making the same point over and over in the same chapter and sometimes across chapters. Too much of the time, I felt like I was reading an unedited dissertation. For example, Garder (appropriately) uses quotes from a variety of primary sources, but then, rather than clarifying or elaborating on the points made in the quote, he writes virtually the same thing in a follow-up paragraph. The repetition was VERY annoying, and I found myself barely skimming sections of the book in search of the next substantive point.

Overall, there is certainly enough substance in the book to make it worth reading. Gardner does shed valuable light on Truman's civil rights record. A good editor, however, would have made for a much better reading experience.

Doesn't Do The Subject Justice
By David M. Sapadin
Gardner has examined one facet of Harry Truman, probably the most important and significant facet of Truman's time in office, which was his willingness to risk power for a moral imperative - the equality of all Americans. Even though David McCullough talks about it in his book "Truman," HST still has received far too little credit for his role as a major catalyst of the modern civil rights movement, mainly because it didn't "take root" for about ten years after he left office. But this in no way detracts from the significance of Truman's courage, which was demonstrated by his willingness to split the Democratic party and thereby risk the 1948 election for what he felt was something that was not only politically necessary, but, quite simply, morally right (although unpopular). It was HST's Civil Rights Commission and his Executive Order integrating the armed forces that finally gave the US Civil Rights movement the inertia it needed to overcome the gravity of American tradition which was still flourishing in the form of "Jim Crow."
I was not especially impressed by the writing skills of Gardner. There is far too much repetition, and not enough anecdote...especially about the African American servicemen who were being lynched as they returned from WWII. It was this inconceivable injustice that provided the moral imperative that struck Harry Truman so hard and caused him to take the steps he took. As a result, WWII became THE seminal event in 20th Century US History.

Blast Vibration Analysis, by Professor G. A. Bollinger

An aid to those who make and interpret blast vibration measurements, this book serves as an especially useful and timely introduction

Wave phenomena are a familiar part of everyone’s experience. Water waves are perhaps the most graphic, but the existence of sound waves, light waves, and electromagnetic radio and television waves is also well known. The destructive effect of earthquake waves receives widespread publicity. It is thus obvious that gases, liquids, and solids will support wave motion. For the understanding and analysis of blast vibrations, scientists and engineers require a sophisticated understanding of wave phenomena. G. A. Bollinger in Blast Vibration Analysis makes an important contribution to this study focusing on the origin, transmission, and types of elastic wave in solid media. The physical laws involved in waves analysis as well as the mathematical tools needed to specify and analyze the variety of wave phenomena encountered in nature are also provided.

Mr. Bollinger synthesizes the theory and literature from the seismological, geophysical, and engineering disciplines pertinent to the subject area of blast vibrations induced by quarrying, mining, and engineering operations. While the theory and analytical techniques presented do apply to vibrations from earthquakes and nuclear explosions, the author avoids developing a specific consideration of those latter phenomena. However, he applies the analytical tools that have been so highly refined in earthquake engineering, earthquake seismology, and seismic exploration for petroleum, i.e., digital and spectral analyses, to the blast vibration problem.

Dividing his book into five textual chapters, Mr. Bollinger devotes the first two to a detailed consideration of seismic waves, both from a general physical viewpoint as well as from the effects of blasting. The third chapter covers the mathematical theory of the seismograph along with examples of instruments currently used by professionals. A very specific discussion of the analysis of blast vibrations, including steady-state, suddenly-beginning, digital, and trace-matching analyses is presented in the fourth chapter. The concluding chapter considers damage criteria, both American and European, along with the structural and physiological effects of blast vibrations. Mr. Bollinger’s skillful exposition of each of these topics starts at an elementary level—assuming some college engineering or scientific background—proceeds to an intermediate stage, and then suggests directions for more advanced study. While the theoretical presentation is kept general, specific examples and certain relevant points are made with reference to Sprengnether seismic instruments.

Each chapter is followed by a list of references, and a bibliography of the field of engineering seismology as a whole appears at the back of the book. Numerous informative tables, figures, graphs, charts, mathematical examples, and photographs of instruments are included in the body of the text.

Scientific students and professionals will find Mr. Bollinger’s book stimulating and suggestive of further ranges of study and practice.

Review

“This present work represents a successful attempt by a specialist in earthquake phenomena to deal with the basic elements of vibrations arising chiefly from blasting, but the theory and associated analysis are equally applicable to other causes of wave motion through strata. The book… takes the reader from physics of wave motion through generation, measurement, analysis and effects of vibrations…A happy balance is struck between theory and practice so that the two blend easily…

“The book can be recommended as a handy and concise reference for blasting engineers and… a good introductory textbook on the subject of vibrations.”

—Robert Shepard, The Mining Engineer

Bollinger “synthesizes the theory and literature from the seismological, geophysical, and engineering disciplines pertinent to the subject area of blast vibrations induced by quarrying, mining and engineering operations.”—Mining Engineering
