This is a good book on how to make balloons but it didin't include the free balloon pump and balloons. Luckily I had bought a pump and balloons from another company. My grandchildren were here for Thanksgiving dinner and while they were waiting for the dinner they really enjoyed making balloon animals. What fun they had. Even my son got into the act.

Born Thomas-Alexandre Davy de Ia Pailleterie in 1762 to an enslaved black woman and a white French nobleman, the young Thomas Alexandre spent his first fourteen years on the island of Saint Domingue. Following his mother’s death, Alexandre joined his father in Normandy in 1776. Later, he moved to Paris alone. In 1786, after losing financial support for his libertine Parisian life, Thomas-Alexandre enlisted as a private in the French army under his mother’s name—Dumas. From there began a distinguished military career that saw early rapid advancement, peaked with high favor from Napoleon, and ended after unjust attempts on Dumas’ life.

The Story of the Father of Alexandre Dumas

Many Americans would recognize the name Alexandre Dumas as that of the prolific French writer who penned unforgettable adventure novels such as The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. But it is a safe bet that most Americans have never heard of his father, General Alexandre Dumas--one of the great, but now forgotten, heroes of the French Revolution, whose military exploits provided a source of inspiration for the literary imagination of the son.

John G. Gallaher set out to correct this oversight with his 1997 biography of General Dumas. He gives a fascinating account of this larger-than-life figure who rose from humble beginnings as a slave on the island of Saint Domingue to become one of Napoleon's generals during the Italian and Egyptian campaigns. Gallaher chronicles Dumas' story carefully, giving a lively account of the critical stages and events of his life: slavery to young adult life in Paris; conflicts with his father leading to his entry into the French army; his breathtaking rise from private to general; and finally, his eventual downfall and disgrace due to the conflicts that he foolishly provoked with Napoleon and Napoleon's chief of staff.

Though Gallaher's biography provides a fairly good account of French Revolutionary history, readers who come to this book without prior knowledge of the subject might have some difficulty in understanding the context of the narration. Another source of difficulty is that Gallaher provides exacting detail about troop movements for some of the battles, but does not illustrate the maneuvers on the maps that are provided.

In spite of these inconveniences, readers who want to learn about the man whose heroism inspired author Alexandre Dumas to write great adventure novels will enjoy this book.

I Love the Collected Verse of Edgar A Guest

This book is so terrific, I have bought at least 6 copies of this book to give away as gifts. My husband started reading Poems from this book to our kids at the dinner table after dinner each night, starting in 1968.
The kids memorized many of the poems, and they have used them in their life in teaching their kids. All of Edgar A. Guests poems have a message to all who read or listen to them. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone and to your family.

Nostalgic verse

This is a wonderful compilation of homey verse reminescent of days gone by - a simpler life and simple joys. All poems are written in rhyming verse and depict common, everday occurences that bring back happy memories to those having lived the simple life of of the early 1900's. There are poems written about almost any topic of daily living imaginable. The poems give a great insight for modern generations interested in getting a glimpse of the way things were for many of previous generations - what many often refer to now as "the good old days". 'Raisin Pie' is one of my favorites. My best friend had a copy of this volume years ago that I always envied. I was so thrilled when I was able to find and purchase one for myself tho' somewhat dog-earred but obviously well used and loved by previous owners. Amazon has been a treasure trove of many out of print books and old favorites.

Lawrence rearranged and rewrote the poems to conform to a chronologic, thematic, and mythic plan, a plan he hints at in the unpublished Foreword to Collected Poems. In its final form, the poetry tells the story of Lawrence’s “demon,” a figure of his essential self, by recounting the chronological development of the “new” from the “old” self.

Comparing form and content of versions of representative poems from the collection, Mandell analyzes the evaluation not only of Lawrence’s poetic style but also of his ideas concerning human and physical nature. She contends that Lawrence was a mature poet with a developed system of poetic and philosophical thought by 1917, when he published Look! We Have Come Through! At that time he rewrote extensively. Through comparison of selected poems, several of which appear in print for the first time, we can reproduce Lawrence’s emendations and thus depict the creative mind at work.

It is Engel's thesis that Serling's early live TV dramas, Requiem for a Heavyweight and Patterns , ecstatically received by the critics who pronounced Serling the Arthur Miller of TV, dogged Serling for the rest of his prolific career in TV, movies, stage, and prose. Driven by his twin fierce demons of ambition and insecurity, he became mired in the "velvet alley" of Hollywood, writing too fast (actually, dictating his scripts and rarely revising) on too many projects, so that The Twilight Zone (156 episodes, 1959-64, most of which he scripted) became his tomb. He ended his career in the knowing ignominy of commercials and game shows. If Serling never becomes the intended tragic figure in this unincisive but interesting first biography, still Engel is adept at dissecting the deficiencies of the scripts and revealing the extreme, often petty, censorship power wielded by networks and especially sponsors and ad agencies in the so-called "Golden Age" of TV.

Odd For Engel To Write A Bio Of Someone He Clearly Doesn't Like

This is the second Rod Serling biography I've read and it is terrible! Engel claims to be a fan of Serling's work but the entire book is just a lame depiction of Serling, claiming that any good idea he ever had was stolen from someone else. Serling the man is also depicted as a bumbling, inept, insecure fool without an ounce of integrity. Perhaps this biased, negative approach stems from the fact that Engel is a journalist and the media tends to fixate on the "sexy" underbelly of life.

Also, it's surprising how little Engel knows about the fiction writing process. It's the writer's job to take what is going on around him or her and spin it into a tale, but whenever Serling is shown doing this, he is stealing. Well, as Mark Twain said: "Good writers borrow, great writers steal." The legendary Max Brand used to say: "When reading a story, stop halfway through, figure out how the thing will end, write a new beginning to support your ending and, boom, you have a story." Is this stealing or is this being inspired. As a writer myself, the latter is the right explanation. How Engel misses this, I don't know.

At any rate, this is a poor exploration of Serling's life, written in a style that fails to captivate. There are better books on Serling. Avoid this one and read those.

Buy This Book Only if You Think Rod Serling Was Guilty of Plagiarism.

This is another work done by an author who obviously did it only for the money. While the book does have some interesting points, the rest is accusatory of Rod Serling, being a talent-less hack that only becomes famous by sheer luck and modest talent.

In addition, Engel is of the camp that Serling was a plagiarist and constantly stole other writer's works and published them as his own. Engel's constantly uses one specific pattern to abject monotony throughout this book; say something good about the man, and then immediately butcher him thereafter.

As a writer, I understand the need to tell the whole story. But I am also keen to realize when an author isn't interested in his or her subject, but for any other reason than to sensationalize the perceived bad while only modestly telling of the subjects greatness.

Furthermore, Engel's does not back up all these tales of Serling being pathetic and theft-prone, only taking 'word of mouth' accounts by those who obviously had an axe to grind, while ignoring Serling as the great writer he so obviously was. Engel's gave no benefit of the doubt.

The crime committed here is, Engel's obviously did not like Serling as much as he claimed, and sacrificed Serling's great contributions to our world for his own love of money. A subject Serling himself covered in depth at different times in his life.

Engel's calls Serling a thief and a sellout, all the while trying hard to sullying his reputation. This book goes a long way in trying to tarnish--unsuccessfully I might add-- Rod Serling's reputation. I found it disgusting that in the end of the book, Engel's tries to vindicate himself by then speaking with respect and reverence about the man he had spent endless chapters promoting libel against. Joel Engel, a journalist, should stick to writing news columns about the criminous acts of others, and leave those he would butcher, such as Serling, to the real investigative writers who know the process and art of biography.

Marvelously readable look at a true American original

I'm a professional writer, also, and I think that this biography does not rate the slams it has inexplicably received. The author claims that Serling was sued more than once for plagiarizing the works of other sci-fi writers, including the great Ray Bradbury. Engel does not castigate Serling for this. He points out that Serling was a voracious reader, the ultimate workaholic, who wrote approximately half of all Twilight Zone episodes (an amazing output). Engel feels that if Serling did plagiarize at times, he did so inadvertantly. Even one of the Twilight Zone's main contributors admits that writers such as Ray Bradbury left "big footprints" and that it was difficult was any sci-fi writer who came after him not to pick up some of his ideas.

Case in point, the episode "Nothing in the Dark," featuring a very young Robert Redford as a wounded police officer calling out for help to the only person who can hear him--an old woman who has shut herself up in her apartment because she fears death and keeping the door close will keep death from catching her. She even orders her groceries and refuses to open the door until she's sure the delivery boy has left (in case death is coming in the guise of a delivery boy). Well, Bradbury wrote a short story that has exactly this premise, including the manner in which she gets her groceries. This is what Engel is referring to.

Rod Serling was an incredibly gifted man, who had a winning personality. But, like anyone else, he had flaws and fears, and Engels addresses these.

That's why this is called a b-i-o-g-r-a-p-h-y.

Robert J. Hastings is a retired editor and Baptist minister. During his retirement he has concentrated on creative writing, short-term teaching in colleges and seminaries, storytelling, and a syndicated radio program.

Hastings Makes Hisotry Come Alive!

When reading a Nickels' Worth of Skim Milk, I am transported in time and place into the ordinary life of a small boy. It teaches the complexities of an entire generation. I have given each of my three daughters copies of the book when they were in their young teens. It teaches what life was like during their granparents times and how that has influenced our lives. In a time of society's preoccupation with posessions and greed, this book brings us back to a simplier time when blessings were counted more often.

So good, I still remember it 20 years later..

I was ten years old when this book was read to me. My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Podlinski, took a half hour out of every day to read a chapter to the entire class. My classmates and I eagerly awaited each new day just to hear more of the story.

I can't remember much of the actual storyline. I only found it again because I did a google search for "nickel milk book depression." I really only remember how much i liked it and how much I liked the main character.

I can't give a plot synopsis. I can tell you that when I heard this story, narrated by my teacher, I thought that this book was better than anything else. I would've given up recess to stay and listen to more.

I'm so happy I found it again.

Don't Miss This One!

Reprint from a 1970's book that should be in the hands of every American. When we hear we're in a Depression now most old timers (or children of old timers) have a good laugh. They think if they clip coupons, eat at home once in a while and scale back their vacations that they've learned to live with adversity. This is an exceptionally well-written book that tells the story of a boy in Illinois living through the 1930's when a dime was a fortune. As long as the family had a garden, some chickens, a will to do menial work and each other then they could survive . . . and they did. The book is simple and easy to read. You may find yourself up later than you intended because you want to keep reading. This is good for those folks who lived during this time and but is really important for young people who have no idea of the heritage that came from their grandparents. Do yourself a favor and order several copies so you can hand them out to friends and still retain one for yourself.
