About the Author

David Rush is an associate professor of theatre at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he has taught play analysis for over ten years. Named 2002 Playwriting Teacher of the Year by the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, Rush is a Resident Writer Emeritus of the Chicago Dramatists and an ensemble member at the Stage Left Theater in Chicago. He has written over twenty plays and musicals, including the productions Cuttings (2003), Prairie Lights (2002), and Police Deaf Near Far (2000), Dapples & Grays (1994), and Leander Stillwell (1992).

Rather obscure examples

Easy to read, but Rush uses many examples from plays my classmates and I hadn't read yet. This was used for an intro level college play literature class, and it was difficult to understand what he was trying to convey because the examples (A Doll's House, There Glass Menagerie, Fences, The Cherry Orchard) are used as an explanation of concepts instead of an additional tool to get the point across. It doesn't make sense to use such detailed and sometimes obscure examples in an intro book. It would make more sense to use play examples that most students read in high school like Romeo and Juliet, or A Midsummer Night's Dream. However, if you already have read many plays, this should not be an issue.

In illustrating the potential for change when the paradigm shift in composition is applied to graduate education, Ebest considers recent discussions of composition pedagogy; post-secondary teaching theories; cognitive, social cognitive, and educational psychology; and issues of gender, voice, and writing.

Stemming from research conducted over a five-year period, this volume explores how a cross-section of teaching assistants responded to pedagogy as students and how their acceptance of pedagogy affected their performance as instructors. Investigating reasons behind manifestations of resistance and necessary elements for overcoming it, Ebest finds that engagement in composition strategies—reflective writing, journaling, drafting, and active learning—and restoration of feelings of self-efficacy are the primary factors that facilitate change.

Great starter book for women interested in bodybuilding

Betty and Joe Weider are gurus in the field, and this well illustrated book teaches the basics of bodybuilding for women as it was first introduced in the 1980's. Beginners, as well as intermediate and advanced weight lifters will benefit from this book.

Basics and fundamentals are addressed for the novice including such things as where to work out, the importance of rest, what to wear and some basic terminology (there is a glossary included). The types of equipment used are free weights and Nautilus equipment and pullyes. The book details the emphasis of the exercises, the starting positions, the desired movements and gives training tips. Overtraining, sticking points, injuries and individualizing routines are also covered.

Intermediate bodybuilders will benefit with the addition of more standard exercises, and for the advanced bodybuilder the four day split is introduced.

Regarding competition, the pages treat us to photos of Rachel McLish, the first woman to win the U.S. Women's Bodybuilding Championship in 1980 and the title Ms. Olympia. Preparing with diet and exercise, posing and grooming, and off season are all addressed.

Finally some common questions about bodybuilding are answered. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about women's bodybuilding, however for the advanced bodybuilder it lacks in the area of additional exercises and cross training. Very simple, straight forward, basic explanations, Q & A's that answer many doubts for women who are just starting learning about the bodybuilding world. PS: the pictures of the women "Working out" are so ridiculous... they are just modeling their 80's workout outfits in a black & white gym hahaha

A collection of essays but one of the few books with facts

I was teaching a class on Swedish Immigration to the United States, and found this book as part of my initial research. Although this is a collection of essays and not a straightforward history of Swedish immigration, it is also one of the few books on this topic which has an in-depth collection of facts on all aspects of Swedish immigration from the Colony of New Sweden to the end of the great migration. Very useful, but still incomplete in spots. It seems that the definitive book on Swedish immigration is yet to be written.

Pretty Good Lite Recipes For the Microwave, Dinner In A Jiffy!

For me, I like to save calories and save time. At the end of the day, I want to fix a simple meal that is done in a jiffy! This cookbook has it all - well almost! Many of the recipes I like but some, not so much. But I do rate it highly because many microwave cookbooks do not give you a ONE DISH, Lite version and under 350 calories.
So all of this considered, this a nice Microwave Lite Dish (One Dish) cookbook.

Robert L. Davis is the director of undergraduate writing and a professor of English–writing at Eastern Oregon University. He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, including an online multigenre textbook coauthored with Mark Shadle.

Mark F. Shadle is a professor of English–writing at Eastern Oregon University. In addition to publishing his work in journals and books, he presents workshops with coauthor Robert Davis on multiwriting and alternative composition methods.

There are many useful and creative assignments in this book. I especially love the autobiography of a question, the cabinet of wonder, and the chora assignments. These assignments have allowed me (as an English graduate student) to analyze not only others but myself and the ideologies that have shaped my current identity. These are useful assignments in terms of helping students think critically! I've found a way to implement these ideas with computer technology as well.

Each of Hughes's entrees contains no more than 250 calories; salads, vegetable dishes, and desserts no more than 50 each. Tired of cooking separate "diet meals," the author devised these low-calorie (though not necessarily low-sodium or low-cholesterol) recipes intended to satisfy her nondieting family as well as herself. Although the book opens with a collection of sugar-free gelatin salads, many of the ideas aren't bad; while some of the entrees may seem a bit skimpy to nondieters, others are generous. Lots of good, tasty meals

While not as useful as her 300 Calorie One-Dish meals (for me, anyway), this has been a welcome additiion to my cookbook library. I usually do not make the entire menu she outlines, and some of her side dishes are no-brainers, (no cookbook necessary!)but the main courses are great. She uses common ingredients in new ways - not the same old stuff as in all the other diet cookbooks. My entire family (including 2 preteens)have liked everything I have made from the book, and I have had to tell my husband that it is lo-cal. I like to cook, so if you just want simple things to slap together, this book may not be for you, but if you have between 30-45 minutes to make dinner, you will like this book.

Klaus looks at how essayists themselves conceived and refined the essay form and what this tells us about the nature of this type of prose. Klaus points out that "essay" has been a very slippery term, both historically and theoretically. As Peter Elbow examines the prose of Gretel Ehrlich and Richard Selzer, he explores how we account for the literary quality of voice in nonfiction and what this says about the nature of voice.

In Part III: Implications for Pedagogy, five contributors, including Jim W. Corder and Chris Anderson, show how the theories expressed in the earlier essays can be applied to the classroom. All of the contributors argue that literary nonfiction, by its nature, reveals the complexity, power, and rhetorical possibilities of language—and that this ought to be the unifying concern of rhetoric and composition as a discipline.
