Noting an especial kinship between her characters and the grotesqueries that adorn the margins of illuminated manuscripts and the facades of European cathedrals, he argues that O’Connor’s Gothicism brings her tales closer in spirit to the English mystery cycles and the leering gargoyles of medieval architecture than to the Gothic fiction of Poe and Hawthorne to which critics have so often linked her work.

Relying partly on Mikhail Bakhtin’s analysis of Rabelais, Di Renzo examines the different forms of the grotesque in O’Connor’s fiction and the parallels in medieval art, literature, and folklore. He begins by demonstrating that the figure of Christ is the ideal behind her satire—an ideal, however, that must be degraded as well as exalted if it is ever to be a living presence in the physical world. Di Renzo goes on to discuss O’Connor’s unusual treatment of the human body and its relationship to medieval fabliaux. He depicts the interplay between the saintly and the demonic in her work, illustrating how for her good is just as grotesque as evil because it is still "something under construction."

I am presently reading my way, chronologically, through just about every book ever written on Flannery O'Connor. I am now into the 1990s. This is definitely one of the very best books on O'Connor I have yet encountered, and it is also a very rare academic book in that it is not only exceptionally well written but also lots of fun to read. It is full of insights and substance and yet also constantly entertaining and satisfying simply as a fine piece of writing in its own right. Many sentences compel assent, and some will make you laugh out loud. Highly recommended.

You might think a book about the historical geography of Chicago would be a bit flat. Luckily, when it comes to Irving Cutler's "Chicago: Metropolis of the Mid-Continent," this is not the case. Instead, Cutler gives us a popular survey of Chicago's "physical and human processes and phenomena that make it work." Now in its fourth edition, it offers a detailed look at the city's geography, infrastructure, history of immigration and economy in an attempt to explain how "Chicago's remarkable population growth--greater than that attained by Paris in twenty centuries--was achieved in the last century and a half."

This edition features a new section, "Culture, Education, and Recreation," In addition to an overview of the city's many museums and its long literary tradition, this chapter includes a nice summary of the various architectural styles found around Chicago. Cutler looks not only at famous local architects like Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright but also at the residential architectural styles found around Chicago's Bungalow Belt.

While the book is rather scholarly and detailed, it remains accessible to the general reader. It is lavishly illustrated with a large number of original and historical maps. This is a wonderful overview for anyone interested in the geography and development of Chicago.

About the Author

Irving Cutler, a professor emeritus of geography at Chicago State University, has published several books and numerous articles on Chicago, including the award-winning The Jews of Chicago: From Shtetl to Suburb. He serves on the board of directors of several historical and geographic societies, including the Chicago Jewish Historical Society, of which he was a founder, and the Geographic Society of Chicago, of which he was the president. He has spent more than twenty years giving lectures and leading tours addressing the sociological, historical, geographical, economic, and architectural features of Chicago.

diverse history

This bustling, brawling metropolis of the American MidWest! Cutler gives a lively discussion of its history and its present. Showing how it grew from a tiny settlement fort, surrounded by hostile natives, to a modern colossus. During which, many peoples settled. From all regions of Europe, in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ghettos arose of Jews. And indeed of other ethnic groups. Often with overcrowding and dismal sanitation common to many neighbourhoods. The text gives good coverage to many of these groups. Including Poles, Lithuanians and Czechs. More recently, there have been enclaves from Mexico, India and China. We see civil rights struggles. Notably for Negros. But also for Mexicans.

There is also a description of the city's economy. It is the rail nexus of the MidWest. Through which passes a lot of agricultural products exported overseas. So too for machinery.

Cutler does not neglect culture. From its famous writers like Mencken and Bellow to its artists and musicians. Perhaps the only thing downplayed in this book is the harshness of the winter by the lake. For newcomers, this can be the biggest adjustment to make.

Comprehensive view of Chicago

Irving Cutler is clearly in love with Chicago, which he calls the "metropolis of the Mid-Continent". It is not a starry-eyed love that blinds him to the faults of the city, but rather a mature love that sees the object of his affections clearly.

Cutler describes the history of the city, its constantly morphing neighborhoods as they change from rich to poor and back again, populated by every imaginable ethnic group. He describes the geography which, even as a practically lifelong resident, I find I was not fully familiar with. No aspect of the city is left untouched. Education, culture, the business history (which is fascinating), the future.

The book is profusely illustrated with photographs and charts.

Books like this are often boring. This one isn't. The vibrancy of Chicago, past and present, is well captured by Irving Cutler who is clearly very much in love the city. Well worth reading even by the person who has never been to Chicago and has no intention of visiting - and very well worth the attention of every resident of Chicago. A remarkable book.

The Best and Most Complete Book about Chicago

After using this book for almost 25 years at the high school level, I believe that the new edition is even more complete than earlier editions have been. This should be the first book anyone reads about Chicago. It has covered most topics about the city that one could think of at any time. The only topic that it neglects, is politics, which would take up volumes. From the geography of the city, to the economics and the city's future it is all encompassing. The book has always been very readable and continues to do so. For anyone interested in Urban geography, it is the best place to start. The chapters on Neighborhoods are a joy unto themselves. Many friends have told me how much they learned from them, as well as bringing back memories. Dr.Cutler has done an outstanding job in expanding and improving this edition. It should be on top of any reading list about Chicago.

Adult Children Who Won't Grow Up

This book has been a lifesaver to me over a number of years. How difficult it is to have to parent grown children who refuse to move forward into adulthood and be self sufficient. This book has served as a road map to show me that I am not alone in my grief, that all things that children do are not their parents fault, and that there is a survival strategy. I have a very dog-earred, copy that I have highlighted for quick referrence. I have purchased this book for friends and now I am looking for a another copy for backup! Great book, great advice, great comfort!

A must read!

For those that have dealt or a dealing with the ever growing population of 20, 30, 40, 50 year old adults that are entitled, dependent and just don't want to grow up this is a must read!!!!!! This is especially good for struggling blended family marriages with dependent adult step children and enabling parents that will not cut the cord. Not only does this book tell the whys, but the hows of detaching and helping an adult child become a self sufficient adult that will be able to take care of themselves after the parents are gone.

Very informative, well-written, easy to read & understand / Highly recommended

Good cognitive therapy for brokenhearted parents of adult offspring who just don't want to grow up and take on the responsibility that translates to maturity. Provides the correct viewpoint, necessary mindset, and effective strategies to deal with this very troubling problem that's seemingly plaguing recent generations. Breaks down the "why" of the issue and helps lift the fog.

In a nutshell: Be patient, stop parenting, learn to identify and stop reacting to triggers and manipulation, learn to say no, and keep loving your adult offspring as just that, adults. Seems easier said than done when in the midst of this destructive cycle, but have faith that the situation is totally reverse-able. Soon you'll be enjoying a healthy adult relationship with your adult offspring.

In this interdisciplinary study, Flynn defines feminist traditions broadly, situating her discussions within the contexts of literary studies and rhetoric and composition while simultaneously exploring the troubled relationship between these fields. Departing from accepted definitions of modernism, Flynn distinguishes between aesthetic modernism and Enlightenment modernism and uses the work of John Locke, Sigmund Freud, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Michel Foucault, Donna Haraway, and others as benchmarks for historical placement. In addition, rereadings of works by Virginia Woolf, Adrienne Rich, Alice Walker, Louise Rosenblatt, and others demonstrate the complex ways in which they respond to modernist pressures and tendencies. From this context, Flynn’s Feminism Beyond Modernism reconfigures feminist traditions by defining postmodern feminism as a critique of modernism rather than as an antimodern opponent.

A recipient of grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Council of Teachers of English, Elizabeth A. Flynn is a professor in the Department of Humanities at Michigan Technological University. She is the coeditor (with Patrocinio P. Police found John Doe No. 24 in the early morning hours of October 11, 1945, in Jacksonville, Illinois. Unable to communicate, the deaf and mute teenager was labeled “feeble minded” and sentenced by a judge to the nightmarish jumble of the Lincoln State School and Colony in Jacksonville. He remained in the Illinois mental health care system for over thirty years and died at the Sharon Oaks Nursing Home in Peoria on November 28, 1993.

 

Deaf, mute, and later blind, the young black man survived institutionalized hell: beatings, hunger, overcrowding, and the dehumanizing treatment that characterized state institutions through the 1950s. In spite of his environment, he made friends, took on responsibilities, and developed a sense of humor. People who knew him found him remarkable.

 

Award-winning journalist Dave Bakke reconstructs the life of John Doe No. 24 through research into a half-century of the state mental health system, personal interviews with people who knew him at various points during his life, and sixteen black-and-white illustrations. After reading a story about John Doe in the New York Times, acclaimed singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter wrote and recorded “John Doe No. 24” and purchased a headstone for his unmarked grave. She contributes a foreword to this book.

 

As death approached for the man known only as John Doe No. 24, his one-time nurse Donna Romine reflected sadly on his mystery. “Ah, well,” she said, “God knows his name.”

Amazing story of an amazing man

This was truly one of the most inspirational books that I have ever read. It is the true story of an unfortunate man who was discovered in an alley back in 1945. Unable to hear or to speak, he was written off as "severely retarded" and made a ward of the state. His story, as much as we can know, begins here.

He spent many years in a supposed "institution" that was little more than a warehouse for the mentally ill, a place filled with misery and despair. In spite of all this, he had a profound effect on those who got to know him and proved just how strong the human spirit can really be. A kind and gentle man who survived a living hell for many years, and still found a way to smile, to laugh, and to feel love for those who showed him true kindness.

I highly recommend this story, it is one I feel certain will touch many hearts.

On October 11, 1946, a black boy of indeterminate age was found wandering the streets of Jacksonville, Illinois. When police discovered he was deaf, mute, and suspected to be retarded, he was sent to the Lincoln State School and Colony, a state facility that bore little resemblance to its name. Had he been permitted to stay at the School for the Deaf, his life would have been completely different, but that school was not permitted to take retarded people.
The Lincoln School was a self-contained city having a farm with price-winning cattle and a dairy processing plant. It generated its own power and returned thousands of dollars to the state treasury, thanks to the free labor provided by the residents (really inmates). These people varied from the very severely retarded to those of borderline intelligence. The place was vastly overcrowded, and the pecking order among residents was often established violently.
John Doe, as he was called since they were unable to identify him at all, was given an I.Q. test, but much like any test, if you don't understand the value or importance of the test, there will be little incentive to do well, even assuming you can understand what is expected of you. A special test was used that had been designed for the deaf, but the examiner had difficulty conveying the purpose and instructions for the various tests that were disguised as games or puzzles. John's deafness and inexperience were a huge impediment, and, not surprisingly, he scored very low on the test. This result was to haunt him for years to come. After several unsuccessful escape attempts, John gradually adapted to his surroundings. He had no known relatives so there was no one to claim him nor to send him packages or money that might help alleviate his situation.
By the mid-sixties, thanks in part to JFK's commitment to improving conditions and education for the mentally retarded and an Illinois commission, facilities and conditions were improving at the Lincoln School. John Doe had now been there close to two decades. Unfortunately, it was also the time of Chlorpromazine that the psychiatric profession had discovered could turn unruly or violent patients into virtually catatonic, but untroublesome, individuals. It soon became the drug of choice for nearly everyone in an institution. Despite regular doses, John was becoming one of the best students in the ASL class that had been started for the deaf residents. He became a trustee and was placed in charge of several other patients, helping them to dress and to get ready for the day.
By 1973 the side effects of the drugs began to manifest themselves and John was inflicted with diabetes and glaucoma. In 1975, the Lincoln School was converted into a state prison, and John was sent to the Jacksonville Developmental Center. He was now totally blind, but thanks to a few dedicated individuals, his talents were recognized and he was sent to the Helen Keller School. This provided him with the skills he needed to subsequently live in a series of group homes.
He died a few years later, but to this day no one has still been able to track down his identity.

Life's a Mystery

A very interesting story and topic best summed up by Mary Chapin Carpenter herself when she penned the words in her song that she included on John Doe 24's tombstone, "Well there's no doubt that life's a mystery, but so too is the human heart." I would suggest that many readers are drawn to this book through Mary Chapin Carpenter. For those that are, you are apt to find a 'Lewis' that is different than the one you may have envisioned since you first heard Ms. Carpenter's haunting melody. In many ways it is hard to distinguish the human being that lives inside this deaf and mute body. It is difficult to read because it tears us from the comfort of our own 'perfect' lives.

The song apart, I learned a great deal about the history of institutional care through the journey that Lewis stumbles into in 1945. The picture is not pretty. Still, it is important to understand that institutional culture does exist in America. Having read this book, I am now compelled to learn where it is today with the hope that it has improved dramatically since the events I read in Mr. Bakke's book.

Not a particularly 'fun' book to read, but one that should be on your list.

NOT His (Hayes) Best Work!!!

I was lucky enough to have bought this book used in mint condition for a very small amount of money. I cannot believe this title is selling for as much as it is to collectors. The book is excellent, but the same material can be found elsewhere for a lot less. I will give a breakdown of each chapter, which there is, only five of:

Chapter One - History Behind The History. This part is a background and discussion of terminology and its history. This chapter also briefly covers over the major clans. It sets the pace for the rest of the book. A good alternate to this is Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi book "Ninjutsu - History And Tradition", which covers the same in greater detail.

Chapter Two - Religious And Spiritual Influences. This small chapter covers overviews of Hinto, the original faith of the Japanese people. As well as Buddhism and how it filtered into other spiritual aspects of the warrior breeds. A book with much of the same type of topic information is Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi book "Essence of Ninjutsu".

Chapter Three - Ninja Combat Tools. I was a little disappointed in this chapter it only discussed two items. The Bojutsu (six foot staff) and Kunai (a casual banged out piece of iron, in the somewhat form of a blade or tool edge), Hayes went into great detail of both items techniques and employment. I was hoping to read more information on other tools and weapons but the book did not come through. I am not going to recommend a book on the staff because the titles are vast, but I will recommend a few titles on ninja weapons. Hayes book "The Ninja and their Secret Fighting Art", "Traditional Ninja Weapons" by Charles Daniel and "Exotic Weapons of the Ninja" by Campbell.

Chapter Four - Ninja Espionage Networks. This area covers traditional techniques used to get close in to targets, with the use of disguise, theatrics and other forms concealment of one's true identity and purpose. Again this is one of the Hallmarks of the Ninja and Hayes uses a mere nine pages of text on this subject. A good alternate to this is "Ninja the Invisible Assassin" by Adams and again Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi book "Ninjutsu - History And Tradition".

Chapter Five - Ninja Guerrilla Warfare Techniques. I do not know where he came up with this title for this chapter. He covers this chapter in four pages of text, which goes into a hand full of ruses and stratagems. I found nothing unusual or different from other works here again a better alternate is Sun Tzu "Art of War" and "Ninja the Invisible Assassin" by Adams and again Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi book "Ninjutsu - History and Tradition".

This title had no end matter (bibliography, glossary, and index). The book is heavily illustrated one of its high lights. The illustrations and B&W photos were clear.

As a final note, the book overall is good and ideal for novices of the study. This is and old title, which I am sure, was ahead of its time when published, but now many books have come out (as I already listed above) that cover this material much better then Hayes work here. I noted to myself after receiving and reading this book, realizing why he (Hayes) has not reprinted this title, sadly it is definitely not one of his best works.

Very original information

the author is a man who doesn't bluff and who tells you in a plain and clear way about the ninja arts. Especially peculiar is that he calls the weapons: 'tools'. And he has a good point there because ninja weapons can be used in more ways than ordinary weapons, they have multiple purposes. Good pictures, well written; a very good book; also suitable for someone who is very sceptic about ninja stuff. So put this one back in print! it's worth it!

theres more than one reason why this is rare this book according to "sources" is the one that really seperated him from the bujinkan its all speculation of course but it is rare and and shortly after this came out he was out of the "scene" people should know 1 more thing about about hayes it was him and tanemura that went and did research back in late 70s early 80s together on ninjutsu neither are around now then hayes trained with manaka hes not there either...weird...hayes teaching cert is also different than most....ths book is good i recommend it just for the controversy alone....why did they wanna shut it up?along with his weapons line he released around same time...strange...again most is all from secondary sources...but i put it here. i encou

I am a high school special education/alternative education teacher in Oregon, working with special needs youngsters.
"Number Power Review: Whole Numbers to Algebra" gives a clear, concise overview of basic math including algebra. The book is an excellent resource for students as a basic life skills class or as preparation for the GED and SAT tests. An invaluable resource!

Contemporary's Number Power Review is Very Good, Not Great
By rite name
This book is easily read by students who need to brush up on their math for business or for academic tests. I have been using the book in my classes for 2 years. The only problem is that the authors have mixed the subjects in such a way that there isn't a direct flow from one topic to the next and some of my students find it difficult to keep up. They seem to forget the previous chapters and don't understand where everything connects. I reccommend this book to anyone who wants to brush up, but not to someone who isn't familiar with the topics.
