The Force of Fantasy: Restoring the American Dream, by Professor Emeritus Ernest G Bormann PhD

In this book, first published in 1985, Ernest G. Bormann explores mass persuasion in America from 1620 to 1860, examining closely four rhetorical communities: the revivals of 1739–1740, the hot gospel of the postrevolutionary period, the evangelical revival and reform of the 1830s, and the Free Soil and Republican parties. Each community varies greatly, but Bormann asserts that each succeeding community shares a rhetorical vision of  restoring the “American Dream” that is essentially a modification of the previous visions.  Thus, they form a family of rhetorical visions that constitutes a rhetorical tradition of importance in nineteenth-century American popular culture.

Review

“Bormann’s research has been prodigious, and his descriptions are fascinating.  He has located little-known resources and from them is able to provide such vivid details (of the Methodist circuit riders and the camp meetings, for example) that it is almost possible for the reader to share in the fantasy themes. The Force of Fantasy is a tour de force, a remarkable explication and application of a critical system in an important historical period.  It reveals a serious humanistic critic at work explaining another way of looking at human communication, producing new insights into our past and a better understanding of how humans cope with reality.”

—Quarterly Journal of Speech

“Bormann is at his best when discussing the rhetorical themes and techniques of individual orators and when sketching the communication styles of Puritan and revivalist preachers.  There is, for example, no better statement about the artistry of Jonathan Edwards’s classic sermons than Bormann’s judgment that they ‘deserve to be studied and appreciated as rhetorical artifacts just as Hamlet might be studied as the highest expression of Elizabethan drama.’  Nor is there a superior summary of the stylistic changes in Abraham Lincoln’s speeches from the 1830s to the 1850s.  As the magnum opus of fantasy theme analysis, Bormann’s study deserves wide reading and close scrutiny.”—Rhetoric Society Quarterly

Bormann's rhetorical theory gives insightful guidance about group behavior
By Norma Desmond2009
Bormann's study is invaluable for those who wish to know how what we now call Internet viral tropes or "memes" spread and bond a group. The spread of ideas via fantasy typing and themes began centuries ago as far back as the first human records. Of course, the value of group bonding over fantasy themes and tropes depends upon what those themes and tropes actually are. This community discourse pattern can achieve humane and beneficial results or less socially desirable results. Consider Bormann's theory for either the positive or for other ways that a symbolic cue can move a group.

I don't think there is a day when I do not think of fantasy themes when I watch the news or read print media. Thanks to Ernest Bormann, we have some cognitive hooks upon which to hang our theories of what is driving group behavior and what key points make a group coalesce around an issue.

The Atlanta Youth Murders and the Politics of Race (Elmer H Johnson & Carol Holmes Johnson Series in Criminology), by Professor Bernard He

At least twenty-nine black children and young adults were murdered by an Atlanta serial killer between the summer of 1979 and the spring of 1981. Drawing national media attention, the “Atlanta tragedy,” as it became known, was immediately labeled a hate crime. However, when a young black man was arrested and convicted for the killings, public attention quickly shifted. Noted criminologist Bernard Headley was in Atlanta as the tragedy unfolded and provides here a thoughtful exploration of the social and political implications of the case both locally and nationally. Focusing on a singular historical event, Headley exposes broader tensions of race and class in contemporary America.

Review
“In a careful and poignant narrative analysis, [Headley] asks what conjunction of social forces produced twenty-nine murders of impoverished black children during the administration of a black mayor in the South’s most progressive and corporately successful city.  He links Atlanta’s rise to the unraveling of the core city and the ghettoization of violent crime.  A riveting narrative reveals a city of white business royals, black civic princes, and a surplus of black workers and their expendable children.”—Renny Golden, author of Disposable Children

“Bernard Headley has produced a solid piece of work about an important historical event which has wider and more profound implications concerning race and class in the United States. . . .  In my judgment, his explication of the roles of race and class in Atlanta (and by implication the United States) is exactly accurate.”—Richard Allen Morton, Clark Atlanta University

About the Author

Bernard Headley is a professor of criminology and criminal justice at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago.  A former Senior Fulbright Scholar, Caribbean Regional Lecturing Program, he is the author of The Jamaican Crime Scene: A Perspective.

Not worth your time or money
By Paula
One of the more disappointing books I have read on the subject. The author doesn't offer anything new he basically used excerpts from the book The List sprinkled with a few statistics and pictures. His epilogue in which he gives his reasons why he believes Williams is guilty is easily refutable and nonsensical. You won't glean anything new about the murders that you wouldn't reading old newspaper clippings and The List by C. Dettlinger and J. Prugh. I paid 1 cent for this book and that is about what it is worth.

The Atlanta Youth Murders and the Politics of Mr. Headley
By Prinsex
I was so excited when I read the title of this book, however upon reading it, I am infuriated. Headley starts off strong, carefully illustrating the history of Atlanta and the backdrop upon which the murders took place. Headley ommitted several important facts and added many trivial comments in place of simple truth. Headley for some reason has convinced himself that Wayne Williams is guilty of the murders in spite of glaring inconsities with that theory. It is hard to believe and even more it is scary to think Headley is a criminologist. Headly ignores details that any untrained civilian could perceive as information contrary to the belief that Wayne Williams is guilty or more importantly got a fair trial. Headley often accuses anyone involved in trying to disprove the lone nut theory against Wayne Williams as a person with their own agenda or possibly a vendetta against the Task Force, FBI, GBI, and the various police departments who at the time were mishandling these cases. If you are a person well versed on this case however, at some point you will be compelled to ask, " What exactly is Bernard Headley's agenda?" It is hard to believe that someone who calls themselves a criminologist and attended Williams' trial could overlook the terrible investigation and the ultimate unfair trial that took place. In my opinion, Headley is the kind of conspirator that kept the lies that have dogged this case going strong for over 25 years now. He tries to come off so sympathetic when it comes to the victims and their loved ones but he has done a great disservice to them by writing this propoganda he tries to pass off as a book. He got his information from the FBI's freedon of information act files and they themselves are so redacted that it serves for the excuse of why his book and his assertions are so full of holes. The only saving grace of this book is its accounts of the victims, their ages, the last time they were seen alive and how and when they (if it was even them the investigation was handled so sloppily that many mothers never believed it was their sons who had been found) were found dead. I could go on and on on Headley's flawed account of a serious tragedy that has never been properly addressed, but I won't. I'll just end this with, Don't buy this book. For a more in depth and truthful look at this tragedy buy The List buy Chet Dettlinger or Those Bones Are Not My Child by Toni Cade Bambara. In addition there are recent documentaries as well as the movie Echo of Murder that further cast doubt on Williams' conviction and more plausible explanations of what happened to the murdered youth of Atlanta. I have written this review because the Atlanta Youth Murders have become very important to me and I hate the way Mr. Headley for some unapparent reason chose to write a book and ignore the glaring evidence that justice wasn't done. Here's a suggestion Mr. Headley, take a closer look at this case and try to see it without prejudice then write a new book and you can call it, The Atlanta Youth Murders and the Politics That Blinded Me.

Get the book if you are a serious researcher on the subject
By Blackbird
I understand how people can criticize Mr. Headley. However, his book is a vital part of any worthy collection regarding the Atlanta Child Murders. I can't argue with the socioeconomic analysis Mr. Headley does on Atlanta - circa the era in which the murders took place.

As the title implies, Bernard Headley details Atlanta's development leading into the tragedy, and the impact the murders had on the community. He provides a thorough, yet tidy account of the facts, and chronicles how the saga developed, leading to the conviction of Wayne Williams.

I caution everyone, before you criticize Bernard Headley's book, read it first. As a longtime resident of Metro Atlanta, the controversy surrounding the Atlanta Child Murders has never really died, and there are several people who still believe Wayne Williams was railroaded. However...Mr. Williams - as is often stated - is his own worst enemy. We're not talking about an innocent bystander who was eating his ice cream, walking down the street - when the authorities swarmed in and arrested him for a heinous crime. At the very least, Wayne Williams was/is a habitual liar and antisocial individual. Do not discredit Bernard Headley for his eventual conclusion. Read the book and gauge it for what it is. At the very least, the book does an excellent job chronicling the social/racial dynamics and societal panic surrounding the staggering murder spree in Atlanta.

Excellent natural bodybuilding book, nothing left to chance!
By A Customer
Negrita Jayde writes a remarkably complete, concise, and approachable book on the intricacies of natural bodybuilding. She makes few assumptions about the knowledge level of her readers, but yet the book is so informative that even experienced bodybuilders/competitors won't be bored. She covers everything from visual impressions of the body, symmetry, nutrition, training, supplementation, lighting for training and photographs, definitions of physical (worth the price of the book alone!) condition, and presentation, plus some of the psychology of bodybuilding and that of the reactions of the general public to bodybuilders...the most complete and useful book I've seen...I use my copy continually

I use it as my nutrition bible!
By A Customer
This book is the only book I've found that goes deep into the importance of nutrition in bodybuilding. I refer back to it time and time again and each time I learn something new! It's great for those who just want to shed a little body fat for summer and for those who want to "cut-up" for competition. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about diet, exercise and strength training!

Great Book
By sydhaze
I know very little of what is to be known about being a great bodybuilder, beings I have only competed in two bodybuilding competitions. I have read Arnold's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, as well as a book by Franco Columbu, both of which are great, just as this one is. I highly suggest anyone of any caliber to read any of these books. Don't just skim the book either, read it! When I read sliced I felt like Bill was talking directly to me, with comments like "oh I'd look like that too if I ate a lot and lifted that hard", but we all know the little runts that say that could never do what it takes to be the best.

Performing Loss: Rebuilding Community through Theater and Writing (Theater in the Americas), by Jodi Kanter

In Performing Loss: Rebuilding Community through Theater and Writing, author Jodi Kanter explores opportunities for creativity and growth within our collective responses to grief. Performing Loss provides teachers, students, and others interested in performance with strategies for reading, writing, and performing loss as communities—in the classroom, the theater, and the wider public sphere.

From an adaptation of Jose Saramago’s novel Blindness to a reading of Suzan-Lori Parks’s The America Play, from Kanter’s own experience creating theater with terminally ill patients and federal prisoners to a visual artist’s response to September 11th, Kanter shows in practical, replicable detail how performing loss with community members can transform experiences of isolation and paralysis into experiences of solidarity and action.

Drawing on academic work in performance, cultural studies, literature, sociology, and anthropology, Kanter considers a range of responses to grief in historical context and goes on to imagine newer, more collaborative, and more civically engaged responses. Performing Loss describes Kanter’s pedagogical and artistic processes in lively and vivid detail, enabling the reader to use her projects as models or to adapt the techniques to new communities, venues, and purposes.  Kanter demonstrates through each example the ways in which writing and performing can create new possibilities for mourning and living together.

Review

“Jodi Kanter’s insightful and moving book should be read by all those who use performance and dramatic action as forms of healing. Kanter reminds us of the most profound goals of applying performance to the effects of trauma and loss—the restoring of hope and the rebuilding of community.”—Robert J. Landy, author of Persona and Performance: The Meaning of Role in Drama, Therapy, and Everyday Life and director of the Drama Therapy Program, New York University

“This beautifully written book explores the ways in which people configure and rehearse ‘the art of losing.’ Performing Loss not only describes a multiplicity of strategies for practicing mourning but performs them as well by speaking in a wide variety of voices—literary analysis, poems, practical exercises, adaptation, and personal memory—all employed to both explore and create imaginative new ways of relating loss and performance.”—Mary Zimmerman, Tony Award winner and professor of performance studies at Northwestern University

“There is much to recommend in this ambitious and successful book.  Kanter crafts a sizable theoretical vision about loss and performance, and then proceeds to show, through examples and imagination, ways of embodying the theoretical in wonderfully concrete explorations and exercises.  The pedagogical implications of these performative approaches to personal, community, political, and global loss are astonishing.”—Douglas L. Paterson, University of Nebraska at Omaha, founder of Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed

“Performing Loss invites us into a space of imagining and practicing rituals for mourning.  Elegantly composed, it not only makes a significant contribution to performance theory and practice but, more important, also speaks with resounding clarity and vision to pervasive social needs.”—Della Pollock, author of Telling Bodies Performing Birth

The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant, Volume 26: 1875From Southern Illinois University Press

Pressured in 1875 to declare himself for or against a third term as president, Ulysses S. Grant found it equally difficult to decide what he wanted and to explain himself to the nation. In May, he pronounced the idea of a third term both constitutional and potentially expedient, and defended the right of the people to choose their own leaders. Grant disavowed any desire to continue as president but expressed gratitude at being chosen twice already. His conclusion left room for doubt. “I would not accept a nomination if it were tendered unless it should come under such circumstances as to make it an imperative duty, circumstances not likely to arise.”

As he pondered a third term, Grant’s second term came under increased scrutiny.  The first signs of the Whiskey Ring scandal emerged early in 1875. Investigations uncovered several well-established “rings” of distillers and officials conspiring to skim tax revenues. Indictments were handed down in May, notably in Milwaukee, Chicago, and St. Louis. Those indicted in St. Louis included some of Grant’s own friends. Evidence soon connected the scandal to the capital, and ultimately to Grant’s longtime aide and secretary, Orville E. Babcock. Warned in July, Grant brusquely ordered prosecutors to “Let no guilty man escape,” even those “who insinuate that they have high influence to protect, or to protect them.” But in December, when Babcock made a questionable demand for a military court of inquiry to clear his name, Grant backed him up. The idea soon fizzled, and by year’s end Babcock faced trial in St. Louis.

Grant faced further tribulation in the south. In Louisiana, supporters of rival legislatures clashed on the streets of New Orleans. Lieutenant General Philip H. Sheridan, accused of interfering on behalf of the Republican legislature, described armed Democrats as “banditti,” a remark that became a rallying cry for southerners and those northerners opposed to federal intervention. Grant did recognize the limits of northern patience. In September, after violence flared again in Mississippi, he hesitated to intervene, noting that “the great majority are ready now to condemn any interference on the part of the government.”

Rumors of gold in the Black Hills signaled a new threat to Grant’s Indian policy.  Prospectors flocked to Dakota Territory, and many slipped through military patrols ordered to stop them. Grant sent an emissary to the Sioux with a proposal to buy the Black Hills. Red Cloud responded: “Look at me! I am no Dog. I am a man. This is my ground, and I am sitting on it.” In May, Sioux leaders traveled to the capital, where Grant renewed efforts to persuade them to relocate to Indian Territory, “south of where you now live, where the climate is very much better, and the grass is very much better, and the game is much more abundant.” The Sioux refused, returned home, and rebuffed a commission sent out to resume negotiations. In November, Grant tacitly dropped the military patrols.

Grant left in September for an extensive western trip. In St. Louis, he arranged to sell assets at his farm, which he had resolved to lease after persistent losses. At a veterans’ reunion in Des Moines, Grant spoke against the use of public funds for parochial education. “The free school is the promoter of that intelligence which is to preserve us as a free nation.” Traveling as far west as Salt Lake City, where he met Mormon leader Brigham Young, Grant could not have relished the prospect of returning to Washington, D.C. The Democrats who controlled the House of Representatives prepared to challenge his administration at every turn.

Review

“Reading these volumes is like immersing oneself in a great manuscript and records repository. Nuggets of information are everywhere. One might not find them all except by reading every volume, but the bounty is so great that it is hard to imagine anyone interested in traditional fields of history coming up empty-handed. The set belongs in every research library with an interest in United States History.”

—The Journal of Southern History

“The value of these volumes reaches beyond their author, his mail, and message or calendar listings. General Grant is handsomely served by John Y. Simon’s flawless editing and presentation, which includes lengthy explanatory commentaries that simplify the reader’s understanding. Through every line shines the victor in battle and also the herald who described it. Like Lincoln, Grant knew what the Union had cost.”—Illinois Historical Journal

About the Author
John Y. Simon is professor of history, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He has written or edited, in addition to the published volumes of the Grant Papers, four books, among which is The Personal Memoirs of Julia Dent Grant.

The Real U.S. Grant
By Gloria Mundi
The twenty-six (and counting!) volumes comprising all the known extant writings of Ulysses Grant are indeed a remarkable example of published primary source material. While every volume contains much material that is admittedly of trivial importance to even the most rabid Grant scholar, each book in this series also contains fascinating nuggets of information not found anywhere else. Anyone with even a casual interest in USG is sure to discover something worth reading in every volume. In gathering together not only all of Grant's known correspondence, but relevant peripheral documents, the editors of this series are doing a truly Herculean job and deserve great commendation.

I have only a few quibbles with the series. The first involves something over which the editors had no control. I refer to the fact that, in the first few volumes (particularly Volume One,) Grant's descendants insisted that certain passages in Grant's letters to his fiancee-turned-wife Julia Dent that had been crossed out (either by Julia or other family members) not be published. This idiotic decision is not only extremely frustrating for the reader, but, ironically, damaging to Grant himself. By all accounts, the deleted passages contain nothing that could be considered detrimental to Grant's good name, but by leaving them out, these descendants unwittingly gave the impression that there was something to hide. Hopefully, in an "Appendix" volume at the end of the series, the editors will be sporting enough to include whatever deleted passages can be transcribed, and the series will at last be considered complete.

My other complaints about this series are more minor. While each volume contains copious, and frequently illuminating, footnotes, the editors occasionally fail to provide enough context. That is to say, a brief, undetailed letter of Grant's will frequently be followed by several pages of footnotes providing other letters and documents on the same subject, without giving much information explaining what, exactly, it all meant. The reader who is not already fully informed on the subject being addressed is sometimes left feeling confused about what exactly is being discussed, and what its relevance may have been.

Another drawback is, simply, the price. While these books are certainly handsomely--and obviously expensively--printed and bound, those of us who study history as a hobby rather than as a profession could wish for editions that were more cheaply done, and thus more affordable. Unless you are fortunate enough to have access to a good academic library, these extremely expensive (even when you buy second-hand) volumes are simply out-of-reach for many people. That's a great pity, because in these books is an "insider's view" of Grant that does not fully come across in any regular biography.

Exceptional!
By Candace Scott
This is another masterful book in the series of the Papers of Ulysses S. Grant. Covering a privotal period of his Presidency, the book reprints all of Grant's letters of the time, as well as responses and memoranda directed to him.
"The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant" is a project begun in 1962 for the purpose of publishing all the known letters written by Ulysses S. Grant. Volume one was published in 1967 and there are now twenty-six volumes in the series. People who follow Grant's career are aware of the inestimable value of this project. The Papers contain all known correspondence written by Grant and letters received by him. The editing of the series (by John Y. Simon), is unparalleled and the volumes represent primary source material at its apex.
Those who believe Grant was a "drunkard" or a "butcher" should read his own words, which show Grant's humor, pathos and unique personality. Masterfully edited by John Y. Simon, these volumes are a "must have" for anyone with an interest in U.S. Grant as a general, a politician and as a man. My highest recommendation goes to these volumes.

Unfinished Show Business: Broadway Musicals as Works-in-Process (Theater in the Americas), by Bruce Kirle

In this fresh approach to musical theatre history, Bruce Kirle challenges the commonly understood trajectory of the genre. Drawing on the notion that the world of the author stays fixed while the world of the audience is ever-changing, Kirle suggests that musicals are open, fluid products of the particular cultural moment in which they are performed. Incomplete as printed texts and scores, musicals take on unpredictable lives of their own in the complex transformation from page to stage.

Using lenses borrowed from performance studies, cultural studies, queer studies, and ethnoracial studies, Unfinished Show Business: Broadway Musicals as Works-in-Process argues that musicals are as interesting for the provocative issues they raise about shifting attitudes toward American identity as for their show-stopping song-and-dance numbers and conveniently happy endings. Kirle illustrates how performers such as Ed Wynn, Fanny Brice, and the Marx Brothers used their charismatic personalities and quirkiness to provide insights into the struggle of marginalized ethnoracial groups to assimilate. Using examples from favorites including Oklahoma!, Fiddler on the Roof, A Chorus Line, and Les Misérables, Kirle demonstrates Broadway’s ability to bridge seemingly insoluble tensions in society, from economic and political anxiety surrounding World War II to generational conflict and youth counterculture to corporate America and the “me” generation. Enlivened by a gallery of some of Broadway’s most memorable moments—and some amusing, obscure ones as well—this study will appeal to students, scholars, and lifelong musical theatre enthusiasts.

Review

“Bruce Kirle reassesses America’s most distinctive and popular theatrical form, the Broadway musical, and demonstrates it to be an enormously complex social phenomenon. By analyzing performance conventions—indeed, everything that never makes it into the published libretto or score—he sheds new light on many of the musicals we thought we knew so well.”—David Savran, author of A Queer Sort of  Materialism: Recontextualizing American Theater

“Sweeping through the twentieth century, Unfinished Show Business offers a new perspective on the function of the American musical and its importance to international theatre. Kirle’s book will become a standard study of the form.”     —Judith Milhous, The CUNY Graduate Center

“Through personal anecdote, built from his long years working as a musical director on and off Broadway and on the road, and through meticulous research and nuanced analysis, Kirle creates a vibrant, usable past for a form too often approached through tired linear histories and hagiographies. Unfinished Show Business is a must-read for musical theatre fans, scholars, and artists alike.”—Jill Dolan, University of Texas at Austin

True insight into the life of Broadway musicals
By Michael Kavanaugh
"Unfinished Show Business: Broadway Musicals as Works-in-Process" is a rare treat of a read for enthusiasts and students of the theater. It's a fun step ahead. Bruce Kirle travels beyond the familiar chronological litany of titles and gossip to investigate what makes musical theater trends live and die.

He argues that the style of musicals is ever changing because musicals are based on the foundation of the ever changing American mind. Public scuffles and feelings about race, gender, homosexuality, war, politics, economy and the struggle for human rights are shown as the intimate energy that not only fueled changes in the meanings within the plays but the physical and musical methods as well.

As a big fan of musicals who reads these things all the time, I jumped off my couch in delight as I shared Kirle's adult consideration of history and drama as it effected what took place on the musical stage. It is exciting to depart from the hero worship of the great masters for a moment in order to get a new grip on what led audiences to crown a hit a hit and a star a star in the past century and how the most clever individuals molded their great acts and scores within a fluctuating civil atmosphere.

And there are plenty of lovely facts and amusing anecdotes to be had as well, and so much of it is new to me. Kirle brings his own experience as a composer, director and conductor into play giving a fresh appreciation to the great Broadway artists and their work.

Just when I mourned there was nothing new to think about musical theater, I got a hold of this book and I am grateful. I LOVE this book.

I admit, I haven't read much of or purchased ...
By Michael Byrne
I admit, I haven't read much of or purchased this book. I came across this book researching Anne Bogart's NYU production of "South Pacific"
On the few pages I was able to preview about Bogart's production:
A. He gets the dates wrong
B. He implies that the production was shut down when it was just denied an extension
C. He attributes Larry Gelbart's Famous line about Hitler on the road with a music in trouble to Burt Shevelove
D. He spells Burt Bert.

This is on about two random pages. I can't believe the rest of the book is accurate if these few random pages have so many errors on them.

Farmcarts to Fords: A History of the Military Ambulance, 1790-1925 (Medical Humanities Series), by John S. Haller Jr.

This book is the first history of the techniques, systems, and technologies used to evacuate wounded from the battlefield. Historically, the word ambulance described those facilities that provided temporary assistance to the wounded, thus distinguishing them from stationary hospitals where military personnel received more permanent care. Americans and British, however, applied the term to the two-to four-wheeled transport conveyances that carried wounded from the battlefield to the war hospitals.

With the aid of fifty-four illustrations, John S. Haller traces the histories of both meanings of the word from the Napoleonic era through the Great War and its aftermath. He concentrates on the development of British and American evacuation procedures and technology with a focus on hand conveyances and wheeled vehicles. His intent is not to cover all aspects of medical evacuation but to accurately recount the common medical evacuation problems, incongruities, and controversies that existed for warring nations.

The Asphalt Jungle: A Screenplay (Screenplay Library), by Ben Maddow, John Huston

Dore Schary, then head of production at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, bought The Asphalt Jungle while it was still in manuscript in an effort to match the success Warner Brothers had enjoyed with Burnett’s Little Caesar and High Sierra. The choice of Ben Maddow and John Huston as screenwriters assured the artistic success of the screenplay, for few writer/directors could have matched Huston’s ability to develop these characters cinematically.

It was a case of strength building upon strength. Burnett’s fully developed characters were transformed by Maddow and Huston into a screenplay of impressive immediacy. Indeed the portrayal of the criminals in splendid performances from Louis Calhern, Sam Jaffe, Sterling Hayden, James Whitmore, and Jean Hagen, led Bosley Crowther to lament, “If only it all weren’t so corrupt!” But the characters of Burnett, Maddow and Huston, don’t permit us to romanticize about them or their activities. We share their professional pride in a robbery well planned and are silent accomplices to their mutual treachery.

The Asphalt Jungle was nominated for best screenplay by the Motion Picture Academy and for best-written American drama by the Writers Guild. John Huston received a nomination for best director by the Academy. As a novel, The Asphalt Jungle has been translated into twelve languages.
