Essential for the Clarke fan
By Bill R. Moore
As a long-time admirer of both Arthur C. Clarke the man and his fact and fiction, I've been looking for a good biography for quite a long time, and am glad to say I've finally found one. Neil McAleer has done an excellent job, and obviously put a lot of time into research and interviews. This book was compiled from several interviews with Clarke himself as well as with many of his friends, family members, editors, publishers, fellow writers, colleagues, and the like. One is greatful to get such a great glimpse into the lives of science fiction's most famous author, as well as one of the 20th century's most famous visionaries. Truly a remarkable man, Clarke has had an almost unbelievably productive, meaningful, and memorable life. Here we learn about his upbringing and exploits living on a farm in England in his childhood, and through his experiences in school and budding interest in science and science fiction. We then learn of Clarke's going on to join the Civil Service and eventually the Royal Airforce (where he helped with the radar "talk down" system), and through his college years. We are able to see the development of his writing years, and his active and vital role in the British Interplanetary Society. All of Clarke's major novels and several of his short stories are gone into in detail, and oftentimes we learn of his motivation for writing them, and also something of his writing method. One of the most important and revealing aspects of the book for Clarke fans are the long behind-the-scenes look we get at the making of 2001: A Space Odyssey. We learn of the working relationship between Clarke and Kubrick, and also get a glimpse into the super hush-hush activities that took place on the set. This book covers his career up to the release of his novel The Ghost From The Grand Banks, and a little beyond. It also touches mightily upon his non-fiction writing, as well as his many other and less celebrated exploits - lecturing, popularizing of communications, diplomatic interests, and the like. We learn a lot about Clarke's vital role in the establishment of communications satellites. This is quite simply an essential book for Clarke fans, with much knowledge held within it to put across and share. The only real drawback to it is that it does only go up to 1992, and thereby misses out on some important events in Clarke's career (the release of further books, including his final novel, 3001, his collected stories and essays, his knighthood, the unfortunate (and falsely alledged) accusations of pedophilia against him, and the actual coming of the year 2001, just to name a few.) Still, this is by far the most comprehensive and thorough book about Arthur C. Clarke available. Obvioiusly, as with any biography, it's not a book you'll want to dive into unless you are already familar with the author and his works. If you are, though, then this is an essential volume to add to your collection.

the visible Clarke
By jdp
Well written and quite thorough biography that describes the visible Clarke. He was from a conventional world but chose to live a rather unconventional life in Sri Lanka. How unconventional he was is for another book. It is likely that the more complete picture will be some form of biopic rather than a book. His film legacy, film treatment of his books and documentaries, is large and likely available to anyone wanting to bring this very interesting man to life. Enjoyed his books and likely will reread them to recapture he universe as he envisioned it.

The Conquest of The Illinois (Shawnee Classics), by George Rogers Clark

Written only a decade after George Rogers Clark’s conquest of Illinois, this firsthand account shows the region as it existed in the 1770s, explains how British occupation affected Kentucky settlers, and exhibits Clark’s enormous diplomatic skills in convincing the French settlers and Indians along the rivers of Illinois that they were better off under the jurisdiction of the Americans rather than the British. In his new foreword to this book, Rand Burnette refers to Clark as a psychologist and an expert in human relations.

Believing the British responsible for Indian raids on the people of Kentucky, Clark determined to capture that area, which was claimed by his home state of Virginia. “His plan, which he presented to Governor Patrick Henry,” Burnette notes, “was to take possession of the Illinois country by defeating the British at Kaskaskia, win the support of the French in that area, and thus control both the Mississippi and the Ohio Rivers. The British support of the Indians, who raided the Kentucky settlements from the Illinois country, would be at an end.”

Clark’s stirring narrative—written between 1789 and 1791 and covering 1773–1779—chronicles the events in the Old Northwest in the second half of the eighteenth century. Life on the frontier was dangerous and uncertain at this time. As Clark points out and Milo Milton Quaife underlines in his footnotes, death came to many at the hands of Indians or in military battles and skirmishes.

First published in 1920 and long out of print, the Quaife edition of Clark’s The Conquest of The Illinois reprinted here is for the modern reader superior to the original. First, Quaife provided an index. Equally important for modern readers, he standardized Clark’s spelling. (Clark had little formal education, and his spelling was even more eccentric than that found in a typical eighteenth-century account.) Finally, Quaife’s footnotes often include biographical sketches of the people in the book.

A lot of wasted paper
By V. O. Ritter
This book sounded great from the reviews and the "Look Inside" preview, - - - even though it stated that the pages were from the paperback version.
What was not mentioned is the actual size of the text. The pages are 9 x 6, BUT, only an area about the size of a 3 x 5 index card is printed on each page. This may have been the size of the original book page? since this is a reprint, but it was quite a surprise when I opened the book I had purchased and realized the 214 page book was only going to contain about half of the content that a normal book that size would contain. The letter reproduced in the introduction is so small, I can't read it with a 3x magnifying glass. I have read about 15 pages so far and it seems historically compatible with other accounts of the events covered, So my advice is buy the paperback version of this book OR another title dealing with this subject matter, that will be easier to read.

Difficult Read but Informative
By P. M. Terrell
This book was more difficult to read than books written today because Clark uses the more formal language of his day. However, I used it as research for one of my historical books and I found it to be extremely informative. Clark has never received adequate recognition for his part in fighting the British during the Revolutionary War and it is a travesty that the Commonwealth of Virginia never paid their war debts and left him to pay them personally. This book shows none of the bitterness one might expect, which provides additional insight into the kind of man he was.

A Knight of Another Sort: Prohibition Days and Charlie Birger, Second Edition (Shawnee Classics), by Gary DeNeal

Charlie Birger's legacy is that of the most popular and, arguably, the most violent gangster in southern Illinois during the 1920s. A Russian immigrant who first proved his grit on the streets of St. Louis as a newsboy, Birger later excelled in boxing and breaking horses in the West. But the coming of Prohibition to the coal fields of southern Illinois provided the opportunity for Birger to become a key figure in a maelstrom of violence that would shock the country. Bolstered by years of research and interviews, Gary DeNeal tenders an insightful biography of this controversial character. Enhanced by newly discovered photographs and a new chapter, the second edition of A Knight of Another Sort brings Birger and his bloody era vividly to life. Drawing from the colorful cast of the living, the dead, and the soon-to-be-dead - a state shared by many associated with Charlie and his enemies, the Shelton gang - DeNeal re-creates Prohibition-era southern Illinois. He depicts the fatal shootout between S. Glenn Young and Ora Thomas, the battle on the Herrin Masonic Temple lawn in which six were slain and the Ku Klux Klan crushed, and the wounding of Williamson County state's attorney Arlie O. Boswell. The gang wars ended with massive arrests, trials, and convictions of gangsters who once had seemed invincible. Charlie Birger was convicted of the murder of West City mayor Joe Adams and sentenced to death. On April 19, 1928, Birger stood on the gallows looking down on the large crowd that had come to see him die. "It's a beautiful world, " Birger said softly as he prepared to leave it.

Southern Illinois' Very Own Gangster
By Rick "Mad Dog" Mattix
I picked up the original edition of this book years ago. It seemed then to be the definitive biography of Charlie Birger but Gary DeNeal has seen fit to update it and expand it with new info. This is one of the best gangster biographies I've ever seen and the rural background adds to the fascination. The Birger-Shelton gang war, complete with machine guns, armored trucks, and aerial bombing, equalled the violence and color of Capone's Chicago. A well-written and researched work that brings to life the Prohibition era.

Local History can be Interesting
By Movie Buff
I purchased this book originally while doing family research in Southern Illinois. My family had for years heard stories of my grandfather and Charlie Birger. I wanted to see if any dates/events coincided and to my surprise and relief there were not very many. During the reading of the book, however, I found myself being drawn in and even beginning to become enchanted by Charlie Birger. Don't get me wrong - he was a very dangerous and troubled person - but the writing by Gary DeNeal really drew me in. The history lessons as well as the interesting look at the world of a small time (even though Birger thought he was big-time) gangster was quite interesting. One of the most interesting facets was his association with other local gangsters and the historical look at how East St. Louis, now suffering from urban decay, was once a thriving and beautiful city. This book was a lot of fun and Mr. DeNeal did his research quite well.

Good Clarification of the Topic
By Travis J Smith
Growing up in southern Illinois, the stomping grounds of Charlie Birger, I always heard the stories of gangsters. For anyone who has lived in southern Illinois, it is hard to imagine gangsters, bootlegging, etc. going on in this rural part of the state. Being curious about what was fact and what was fiction regarding Birger, I found this book.
It is a really good read, covering all aspects of Birger, as well as some background information on southern Illinois and the Prohibition period there. It is especially interesting to read about areas you know really well, and soak in the history that took place there. I would recommend this book to anyone from the southern Illinois area.

"O woman, woman! upon you I call; for upon your exertions almost entirely depends whether the rising generation shall be any thing more than we have been or not. O woman, woman! your example is powerful, your influence great."—Maria W. Stewart, "An Address Delivered Before the Afric-American Female Intelligence Society of Boston" (1832)

Here—in the only collection of speeches by nineteenth-century African-American women—is the battle of words these brave women waged to address the social ills of their century. While there have been some scattered references to the unique roles these early "race women" played in effecting social change, until now few scholars have considered the rhetorical strategies they adopted to develop their powerful arguments.

In this chronological anthology, Shirley Wilson Logan highlights the public addresses of these women, beginning with Maria W. Stewart’s speech at Franklin Hall in 1832, believed to be the first delivered to an audience of men and women by an American-born woman. In her speech, she focused on the plight of the Northern free black. Sojourner Truth spoke in 1851 at the Akron, Ohio, Women’s Rights Convention not only for the rights of black women but also for the rights of all oppressed nineteenth-century women. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper struggled with the conflict between universal suffrage and suffrage for black men. Anna Julia Cooper chastised her unique audience of black Episcopalian clergy for their failure to continue the tradition of the elevation of womanhood initiated by Christianity and especially for their failure to support the struggling Southern black woman. Ida B. Wells’s rhetoric targeted mob violence directed at Southern black men. Her speech was delivered less than a year after her inaugural lecture on this issue—following a personal encounter with mob violence in Memphis. Fannie Barrier Williams and Victoria Earle Matthews advocated social and educational reforms to improve the plight of Southern black women. These speeches—all delivered between 1832 and 1895—are stirring proof that, despite obstacles of race and gender, these women still had the courage to mount the platform in defense of the oppressed.

Introductory essays focus on each speaker’s life and rhetoric, considering the ways in which these women selected evidence and adapted language to particular occasions, purposes, and audiences in order to persuade. This analysis of the rhetorical contexts and major rhetorical tactics in the speeches aids understanding of both the speeches and the skill of the speakers. A rhetorical timeline serves as a point of reference.

Historically grounded, this book provides a black feminist perspective on significant events of the nineteenth century and reveals how black women of that era influenced and were influenced by the social problems they addressed.

"A government which can protect and defend its citizens from wrong and outrage and does not is vicious. A government which would do it and cannot is weak; and where human life is insecure through either weakness or viciousness in the administration of law, there must be a lack of justice, and where this is wanting nothing can make up the deficiency."—Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, "Duty to Dependent Races," National Council of Women of the United States, Washington, D.C. (1891)

Awesome book
By Samantha
I ordered this book as a required text in a class. It's a really great book. I enjoyed the background on the speakers and the context of the speech before the speeches themselves. Definitely get it if you want to learn about important and fantastic speakers who aren't always at the forefront of the group.

Breaking the Circle: Death and the Afterlife in Buddhism, by Carl B Becker

In this much-needed examination of Buddhist views of death and the afterlife, Carl B. Becker bridges the gap between books on death in the West and books on Buddhism in the East.

Other Western writers have addressed the mysteries surrounding death and the afterlife, but few have approached the topic from a Buddhist perspective. Here, Becker resolves questions that have troubled scholars since the beginning of Buddhism: How can Buddhism reconcile its belief in karma and rebirth with its denial of a permanent soul? What is reborn? And when, exactly, is the moment of death?

By systematically tracing Buddhism’s migration from India through China, Japan, and Tibet, Becker demonstrates how culture and environment affect Buddhist religious tradition.

In addition to discussing historical Buddhism, Becker shows how Buddhism resolves controversial current issues as well. In the face of modern medicine’s trend toward depersonalization, traditional Buddhist practices imbue the dying process with respect and dignity. At the same time, Buddhist tradition offers documented precedents for decision making in cases of suicide and euthanasia.

By Joel Brown
Breaking the Circle is a comprehensive account of comparative religion between schools of Buddhist thought concerning the nature of death and life's continuity from death forward. After first vindicating the theory of rebirth, its karmic nature is discussed--namely, how the karma of previous existences can effect one another in the light of annata: the view that there is no soul, in opposition to belief in a Vedic/Hindu atman. While the Buddha taught that an enduring self did not exist, it seems he as well taught that the action of the dying person was in a contiguous cause-and-effect relationship with the birth of a new being. This version of rebirth however, suggests a casual continuity between one birth and the next without requiring that the two be identified as the same person. What exists is an instantaneous rebirth of thought complexes, neither identical with nor unrelated to the dying person and not definable in terms of a single permanent underlying substance. Within a Buddhist worldview accepting psychic phenomena it is explained how these elements survive with the death of the location-specific physical body. pp 17, "pyschic components (khandas) neither exist nor cease to exist when dissociated from their cranial counterparts; they simply are not amenable to temporal measurements until they are again affiliated with neurophysiological structures existing within this temporal continuum."
However, my personal understanding of the Buddha's words has always been along much more naturalistic lines. With annata established, it is apparent that although there may not be an immutable soul, the illusion of one certainly arises at times. This character is characterised by thoughts picked up along the way simulating originality of consciousness. The other possibility is that they are an original combination of thoughts, creativity, but nontheless acquired elsewhere. Thus anything you say or do can be potentially be plagiarized at a later setting by another being, thus emphasizing the importance of positive thoughts and not sending out "bad vibes." In this view, previous existences are no more than those who have thought and felt what you think and feel what you do now, and in that way still causally conditioning your present individuality.
As the book traverses each tradition of Gautama's belief in an afterworld (Pure Land, Theravadin, Mahayana, Vajrayahna) its noted that there are similar landscapes recounted in NDE's, ancient Christianity, Pure Land Buddhism, and medieval Asia. What I speak of are intersubjective surrealities. These dreams may result from common human brain chemistries. Several models for survival and continuity are explained. But the "Pure Land" of blissful dreaming is usually only a purgatorian transition from material suffering into the liberation of Nirvana or a place to meet back up with loved ones. Things like this are hard to believe on faith alone (and silly) but definitely cool thoughts. Yet there is also attempts all throughout to make such notions compatible with modern scientific knowledge.
The last section deals with suicide, which Buddhists surprisingly accept. (though not under all conditions) It all depends on the the state of mind inhabiting the organism upon the moment of death and thus its reasons for manifesting a voluntary death.
This book was very informative and highly interesting but loses one star for a lacking structural style. No doubt a fine work on the subject. :¤)

Death as merely a transition to another plane, perhaps to another life back here or on towards nirvana
By James F. Houle
Carl B. Becker is one of the very few truly clear writers on this infuriatingly difficult subject. At least two readings are still necessary however for it to penetrate that Christian/Judaic mind set with which we are still burdened. His early chapters review the three basic Buddhist schools of thought on the afterlife: Vajrayana (Tibetan), Theravadan (Thai) and Mahayana (Chinese-Pure Land and Japanese-Zen). His next-to-last chapter puts it all together from the Mahayana perspective and the final Chapter examines the ethics of suicide, recommends care for those in the last hours of earthly life, and offers reason for joy and acceptance of death as merely the next great transition. A wonderful guide for those providing hospice care and for medical doctors no longer comfortable with the Western notion that all life is over at that last breath. The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is a good companion to Becker.

Touching family stories
By A Customer
I read this book in a day and found myself drawn in by the absorbing stories of family life and story telling. Not an autobiography in the traditional sense, Portwood instead uses the mechanism of story telling -- practiced over her family for generations -- to tell about her own life and her family in rural Illinois. Her account is touching, often humorous, sometimes sorrowful, and overall inspirational. Although Portwood explicitly addresses the issue of segregation and racial discrimination (as well as black resistance to oppression), her stories will also resonate with anyone interested in everyday life in rural communities in the 20th century. This book would also be appropriate for readers in junior high and high school.

History brought to life
By Rosanda Richards-Ellsworth
Precious! Poignant! Absolutely wonderful book. I was struck by the great writing style. I could hear Portwood telling the stories, with such thoughtfulness, sensitivity and humor. There are lovely portraits of family members, told with a gentle, wry smile. It is definitely a special treasure.
I could see similarities to my childhood in southern Wisconsin: the sense of community and extended family, the frugality of Depression generation parents, a mother who was more critical than nurturing, the need to grow up fast and take on adult responsibilities with younger siblings, the joy of spending time with story-telling elders. And the strong emphasis on education--I must have been at least 10 before I realized that not everyone went to the University of Wisconsin and that some didn't go to college at all!
I didn't deal with the pervasive racism which Portwood faced and our community was a particularly prosperous farming community, with little poverty. Still, much of her story resonates with me. This is a wonderful story of a resiliant and strong family. I loved it.

Volume 11 brings together all of Dewey's writings for 1918 and 1919. A Modern Language Association Committee on Scholarly Editions textual edition. Dewey's dominant theme in these pages is war and its after-math. In the Introduction, Oscar and Lilian Handlin discuss his philosophy within the historical context: The First World War slowly ground to its costly conclusion; and the immensely more difficult task of making peace got painfully under way. The armi-stice that some expected would permit a return to normalcy opened instead upon a period of turbulence that agitated fur-ther a society already unsettled by preparations for battle and by debilitating conflict overseas. After spending the first half of 1918-19 on sabbatical from Columbia at the University of California, Dewey traveled to Japan and China, where he lectured, toured, and assessed in his essays the relationship between the two nations. From Peking he reported the student revolt known as the May Fourth Move-ment. The forty items in this volume also include an analysis of Thomas Hobbe's philosophy; an affectionate commemorative tribute to Theodore Roosevelt, our Teddy; the syllabus for Dewey's lectures at the Imperial University in Tokyo, which were later revised and published as Reconstruction in Philosophy; an exchange with former disciple Randolph Bourne about F. Mat-thias Alexander's Man's Supreme Inheritance; and, central to Dew-ey's creed, Philosophy and Democracy. His involvement in a study of the Polish-American community in Philadelphia--resulting in an article, two memoranda, and a lengthy report--is discussed in detail in the Introduction and in the Note on the Confidential Report ofConditions among the Poles in the United States.
