Orality and Literacy in Hellenic Greece, by Tony M. Lentz

An examination of the relationship between writing and orality which proposes that culture flourishes when competition among media emphasizes the strength of each.

Lentz builds on Eric Havelock’s Preface to Plato, providing concrete evidence for Havelock’s hypothesis on the importance of writing to the origins of Greek philosophy. He focuses on the interaction between the abstract thought and verbatim precision that writing reinforced and the memory and oral performance skills that were at the heart of the oral culture.

In each chapter Lentz illustrates the importance of the oral tradition of powerful memory and effective oral delivery in a given context, from the divine inspiration of the rhapsode to the importance of face-to-face interaction in Platonic dialectic. The contexts include the use of written and oral evidence in the law courts to the presence of both traditions in the philosophical works of Plato.

The resulting view of orality and literacy in Greece shows a long interaction between the two media, continuing through the Hellenic period. He shows that both traditions played vital roles in the intellectual flowering of the age: while literacy is a requirement for the basic recipe for Western culture, it is not the only ingredient. Lentz argues that the key to many of the most exciting cultural developments of the Greek world was the relationship between written and oral modes of thought and communication.

Scarface Al and the Crime Crusaders: Chicago's Private War Against Capone, by Dennis E. Hoffman

Dennis E. Hoffman reveals for the first time how a handful of private citizens brought Al Capone to justice by outsmarting him rather than outgunning him.

Hoffman reconstructs privately sponsored citizen initiatives directed at nailing Capone. These private ventures included prosecuting the gangsters responsible for election crimes during the Pineapple Primary; establishing a crime lab to assist in gang-busting; underwriting the costs of the investigation of the Jake Lingle murder; stigmatizing Capone; and protecting the star witnesses for the prosecution during the pretrial period of Capone’s income tax evasion case.

Hoffman effectively debunks the myth that Eliot Ness and the Untouchables defeated Capone by marshaling superior firepower, proving conclusively that the small group of Chicago businessmen triumphed over the gangster because of their affluence, fortitude, creativity, and civic pride. Hoffman suggests that because our society is again threatened by illegal drugs, gangs, and widespread violence, it is important for us to remember that the organized crime and political corruption of Prohibition-era Chicago were checked through the efforts of private citizens.

Eliot Who???
By Rick "Mad Dog" Mattix
No, it wasn't Eliot Ness and his "Untouchables" who brought down Al Capone. It was Internal Revenue agents led by Elmer Irey and Frank Wilson and aided and abbetted by the Chicago Crime Commission and its vigilante arm, the "Secret Six." Professor Hoffman presents us here with a well-documented, and highly readable account of the victory of Uncle Sam and Chicago over America's first major crime lord. Forget The Untouchables. This is the truth.

The best on how Capone was really brought down.
By Mario Gomes
No, you won't find any fluffy misleading writing in here. You can purchase the new and less than stellar Johnny come lately Capone book for that. Mr. Hoffman is what you can call a real expert with no qualms. He has done his research, and you can tell that he cared enough to go over his research to deliver a time standing work on his subject. This book is tops on how and who really brought down Al Capone. Chicago's businessmen realized that action had to be taken, and with the finanical help of Chicago's Secret Six, they set the wheels in motion against big Al and his ilk. This, especially after the infamous St. Valentine's day massacre had given the city of Chicago a serious black eye that was seen around the world. Business was hurting. Tourists stayed away because of the daily headlines read. Gangsters were rampant and killing each other mercilessly for ultimate control of the lucreative booze trade.
Learn how Capone was brought down and how a forensic ballistics expert was funded by the businessmen to try and solve the massacre case.

This book helped me on the right track with my research and is highly recommended for the true crime scholar or the novice history buff.
Either way you won't go wrong. It's a great addition to your shelf of accurate books.

It's different than other Al Capone books.
By Nancy Mitchell
You don't find this kind of information in other books about Al Capone that
I know of. The thing I didn't like is that the author refers to Mr. Capone as
"Scarface Al' too often in the text.

Figuring Transcendence in Les Miserables: Hugo's Romantic Sublime, by Associate Professor Kathryn M. Grossman

In this first book-length study of Les Misérables, Kathryn M. Grossman, with an authoritative command of Hugo’s work and Hugo criticism, situates the novelist’s masterpiece in relation both to his earlier novels—up to and including Notre-Dame de Paris— and to the poetry published during his exile under the Second Empire. Drawing on Paul Ricoeur’s theory of metaphor and on Thomas Weiskel’s analysis of the romantic sublime, Grossman illustrates how the novel’s motifs and structures correspond to a closely connected set of ethical, spiritual, political, and aesthetic concerns.

The religious motifs in Les Misérables identify the sublime not just with utopian ideals (and the overthrow of Napoleon III’s grotesque Second Empire) but with artistic death and resurrection. Examining the ways the novel is largely concerned with the monstrous "brutalities of progress" called revolutions that must precede the advent of heaven on earth, Grossman traces that link to a mythos of sin and redemption and shows how the moral concerns of the plot also illuminate Hugo’s aesthetics.

Les Misérables explores the tensions between heroes and scoundrels, chaos and order, law and lawlessness. Grossman painstakingly follows the novel’s ethical hierarchy from the grotesque (criminality) to the conventional (bourgeois complacency) and the sublime (sainthood), demonstrating how that hierarchy corresponds to two other hierarchies: the literary and the political.

The Insanity File: The Case of Mary Todd Lincoln, by Mark E. Neely Jr., R. Gerald McMurtry

In 1875 Robert Todd Lincoln caused his mother, Mary Todd Lincoln, to be committed to an insane asylum. Based on newly discovered manuscript materials, this book seeks to explain how and why.

In these documents—marked by Robert Todd Lincoln as the "MTL Insanity File"—exists the only definitive record of the tragic story of Mary Todd Lincoln’s insanity trial. The book that results from these letters and documents addresses several areas of controversy in the life of the widow of Abraham Lincoln: the extent of her illness, the fairness of her trial, and the motives of those who had her committed for treatment. Related issues include the status of women under the law as well as the legal and medical treatment of insanity.

Speculating on the reasons for her mental condition, the authors note that Mrs. Lincoln suffered an extraordinary amount of tragedy in a relatively few years. Three of her four sons died very young, and Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. After the death of her son Willie she maintained a darkly rigorous mourning for nearly three years, prompting the president to warn her that excessive woe might force him to send her to "that large white house on the hill yonder," the government hospital for the insane.

Mrs. Lincoln also suffered anxiety about money, charting an exceptionally erratic financial course. She had spent lavishly during her husband’s presidency and at his death found herself deeply in debt. She had purchased trunkfuls of drapes to hang over phantom windows. 84 pairs of kid gloves in less than a month, and $3,200 worth of jewelry in the three months preceding Lincoln’s assassination. She followed the same erratic course for the rest of her life, creating in herself a tremendous anxiety. She occasionally feared that people were trying to kill her, and in 1873 she told her doctor that an Indian spirit was removing wires from her eyes and bones from her cheeks.

Her son assembled an army of lawyers and medical experts who would swear in court that Mrs. Lincoln was insane. The jury found her insane and in need of treatment in an asylum. Whether the verdict was correct or not, the trial made Mary Lincoln desperate. Within hours of the verdict she would attempt suicide. In a few months she would contemplate murder. Since then every aspect of the trial has been criticized—from the defense attorney to the laws in force at the time. Neely and McMurtry deal with the trial, the commitment of Mary Todd Lincoln, her release, and her second trial. An appendix features letters and fragments by Mrs. Lincoln from the "Insanity File." The book is illustrated by 25 photographs.

Review

"[This book] combines the discipline of historical writing with the forward march of a detective story. And it is painstakingly fair to both the pathetic Mary and the tortured Robert. Filled with confident insight and careful documentation, this book must already be considered as an essential addition to the Lincoln bookshelf."    —Harold Holzer, Chicago Tribune

"One of the saddest stories in the Lincoln family saga unfolds in detail for the first time in The Insanity File—the 1875 jury trial to declare Mary Todd Lincoln insane and the role played in it by Robert Todd Lincoln, her firstborn and only surviving son."—Herbert Mitgang, New York Times Book Review

"Neely and McMurtry had to acquaint themselves with the principals in the case, study the judicial procedures and medical practices prevailing in the 1870s, piece together from here and there items of information relating to the trial, and trace historical controversies that have unfolded through the years. Their sensitive and thorough research has led them to the conclusion that Mrs. Lincoln was treated fairly, that human considerations and civil justice did not work to Mrs. Lincoln’s disadvantage."—Myron A. Marty, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"A fair-minded, comprehensive account based on new documents. Unlike their predecessors, Neely and McMurtry have placed Mary Lincoln’s trial within the legal, social, and medical context of the times. So viewed, what happened to Mary Lincoln was governed as much by procedures and collective attitudes as by personal motivations."—Jean Baker, American Historical Review

M.T.L. -- eccentric or ill?
By A. E Rothert
This book does not definitively answer the question whether the involuntary commitment of Mary Todd Lincoln subsequent to the assassination of her husband was just. It does portray Robert Todd Lincoln, the only surviving son of MTL, who initiated the proceedings, in a light more favorable than any previous biography to analyize the event.
As a person who works in the area of mental health law in the State of Illinois, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource in understanding the history of mental health law as it has evolved in this state. That said, there are instances in which legal terms are misused or misinterpreted by the authors, which leaves some question as to the authoriativeness of the opinions they express.
This is largely a work of history. As such, it animates the colorful characters involved in the insanity trial and the developments in the years prior. This is far more interesting any fiction I have read, and its historical basis makes it helpful in considering how we treat family members and the mentally ill today.

I learned a little about law but that is about it. Confusing and not very informative.

Could have been written better
By D. Marquez
After reading the very entertaining "Mary" which I couldn't put down, I wanted to read more into the insanity case. The first few chapters of this book were tedious to get through at best; the authors were very well versed in the historical characters who made up the court and its proceedings, and went on (and on) to tell us about their educations and background, as well as the history of having one committed through jury trial, etc.

This reads as a history book in this regard (unlike the book "Mary") and I scanned over some of it to get to what I really wanted to know. The ending chapters contain actual letters written from MTL to her daughter-in-law which are most entertaining.

Bottom of the Ninth: Great Contemporary Baseball Short Stories (Writing Baseball (Paperback)), by John McNally

Skillfully edited by John McNally, Bottom of the Ninth: Great Contemporary Baseball Short Stories collects nineteen contemporary baseball short stories from a successful mix of well-established writers, lesser-knowns, and a few up-and-comers. These stories are characterized by the same dramatic elements that draw people to the sport itself—the mythologizing of players, the obsessions and romance of the game, the bonds between players and fans, parents and children. From a key play, a missed catch, a chance lost, these are tales of characters facing high stakes and calls to action, metaphorically and literally, in the bottom of the ninth.

“[T]he gem of the [Writing Baseball] series so far, to be treasured by any reader who enjoys baseball fiction.”—SportsFan magazine

“Baseball is . . . designed to induce and embrace narrative. It’s not slow, as its critics charge, just leisurely; its plots and subplots unfold richly, like a good novel, which is why baseball has found a place in our literature that’s unparalleled by any other sport.”—Richard Russo, from the Foreword

Fiction and Baseball - A Perfect Pairing
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann
In this marvelous anthology of short stories about baseball, editor John McNally has assembled the fiction of contemporary writers, from Patricia Highsmith to André Dubus to Stuart Dybek, who share a fascination with the game and its influence on those who play it. Because these writers have different readerships and styles, these thematically grouped stories never get tiring. Instead, each one takes the reader deeper into the love of the game. The result is an exhilarating read for those who love both high-quality fiction and baseball.
Singling out individual stories from the rest is not an easy task since all are deserving of mention. Dubus's "After the Game" is about a major league shortstop from the Dominican Republic who inexplicably has a breakdown after a winning game. This story contrasts powerfully with David Jauss's "The Bigs", also about a player from the Dominican Republic, a minor leaguer who blows his chance at major league play because he cannot reconcile his ambition with what it has cost. Many of these stories are about missed chances and the heartbreak of never reaching the big leagues. Cris Mazza's brutal "Caught" follows a former minor league catcher haunted by his last moment as a professional player as he is picked up by a gay man in a bar. Leslie Pietrzyk shows the desperation of a minor leaguer's wife who will do anything to give her husband a chance at the show on his thirtieth birthday. Dybek's "Death of the Right Fielder" is an surreal story about a nameless right fielder who dies mysteriously - and is promptly buried - in his position. The more traditional "The Barbarians" by Highsmith explores the violence amateur ballplayers elicit in a painter who wants nothing more than to beautify "something that was, essentially, unbeautifiable." We even get a humanizing story about an umpire by Kurt Rheinheimer. In these nineteen stories, not a single one misses.
I highly recommend this book to all who love baseball and literature. Especially as the season gets underway, I can't think of a better way to spend time between televised games.

Literary Baseball
By A Customer
This book is for fans of literary baseball short stories. If you like the work of Andre Dubus (whose story inspired the movie IN THE BEDROOM), Patricia Highsmith (who wrote the novel THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY), and David Carkeet (whose novel THE GREATEST SLUMP OF ALL TIME is often listed as one of the best contemporary baseball novels), then you'll love this book. Some of these stories have appeared in Best American Short Stories, and many have appeared in top literary magazines. Some stories are funny; some are dark. This is NOT a book of baseball anecdotes or sappy sentimentality or play-by-play accounts or simplistic moralizing. Like all great stories, the main subject (in this instance, baseball) is also a metaphor for some aspect of life, and, as anyone who's lived long enough should know, life is nothing if not ambiguous and complex. I highly recommend this anthology of funny, heartbreaking, ironic, scary, and intense stories in which baseball plays a significant role.

Not what I expected
By Dave
I bought this book looking for some stories about players, about the game of baseball, about the human side of it. I bought it for my son for his 11th birthday. I bought the wrong book. This book is NOT appropriate for anyone under 16, and not for many over 16. I'm sure many players use profanity, but almost every story had more than enough. One story led up to a player and his girl going through the trauma of a backroom abortion (where is the baseball in that?), another ended with the picture of a player sliding headfirst into home to be greeted by the batter, a malevolent teammate with a grudge who slugged his face with the bat. Looking for junk story writers trying to be cute or brutally realistic? Fine, this book is for you. Looking for good baseball stories? Look somewhere else.

Not another book about what America did wrong in Vietnam, this one is, primarily, about what we did right. For example, former CIA director Colby and diplomat McCargar maintain that the post-Tet pacification effort (in which Colby was centrally involved) was a great success, that the 1972 Easter Offensive demonstrated that the South Vietnamese could hold their own without U.S. ground support. In staunch defense of Colby's Phoenix program, the book argues for its effectiveness in undermining the Communist infrastructure, claiming that Phoenix's reputation for brutality is undeserved. Fighting the "wrong" kind of war, however, is cited as a mistake, as is U.S. complicity in the '63 coup that overthrew President Ngo Dinh Diem, and Washington's failure to provide aid at a certain juncture in '75. Colby's CIA service, from Saigon station chief to director, provides him with an insider's perspective on the war, a perspective many readers will consider self-serving. Photos.

U.S. Mistakes, Successes & the Shameful Abandonment of South Vietnam
By Bob
William Colby--who served as the CIA Station Chief in Siagon (1959-62), Chief of CIA's Far East Division (1963-68), Deputy to the U.S. Military Commander in Vietnam with Ambassadorial rank (1968-71), and Director of the CIA (1973-75)--wrote this gripping memoir of his sixteen years of professional involvement with South Vietnam. No right-wing ideologue, Colby was a graduate of both Princeton and Columbia Law School whose liberal ideals once led him to work for the National Labor Relations Board in Washington D.C.

While gracious and understanding towards the Presidents (Kennedy-Johnson-Nixon-Ford) whom he served and directly advised, Colby is clear in his judgment about America's mistakes in Vietnam. The first major mistake was American encouragement--especially by Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge and Asst. Secretary of State Averell Harriman--of the South Vietnamese Generals' coup against President Ngo Dinh Diem, and the assassination of both Diem and his brother Nhu. Despite their shortcomings, the Ngo brothers held South Vietnam together for 9 years and made significant progress towards defeating the Communist insurgency in the villages and rural countryside. The political chaos following their assassinations led to directly to an increase in Communist attacks and to the introduction of large numbers of U.S. ground forces to prevent the collapse of South Vietnam in 1965.

The second major mistake, according to Colby, was the way that the U.S. military fought the war in 1965-67, with General Westmoreland and Secretary of Defense McNamara settling on a strategy of attritition and military engagement on the ground in the hopes that the enemy would give up in the face of their enormous casualties. This ignored the essentially political nature of the Maoist "People's War" being conducted by the Communists in the countryside. Unfortunately, by the the time an appropriate change in strategy was made in 1967-68 in favor of village-level and rural security and pacification, U.S. public opinion had begun to shift against the war.

Colby points out that a turning point of the war in favor of South Vietnam came in 1967-68 with: (1) the election of President Nguyen Van Thieu and return of governmental stability; (2) President Johnson's appointment of Robert Komer as the civilian deputy to U.S. Military Commander for Vietnam with Ambassadorial rank to coordinate U.S. government civilian efforts with those of the military and to actively promote the pacification program; (3)the replacement of General Westmoreland with General Creighton Abrams, who helped unified the various American military and civilian government efforts in South Vietnam into a "One War" effort; and (4) the appointment of U.S. Ambassador Elsworth Bunker to replace Henry Cabot Lodge. Colby convincingly argues that, by 1972, South Vietnam had won the "People's War" with its pacification efforts in the countryside. He points out that the South Vietnamese Army--with major U.S. logistical and air support--had been able to defeat the large-scale conventional military attack by the North Vietnamese Army in the 1972 Easter Offensive without the help of U.S. ground forces. In short, a stable Korean-style settlement of the Vietnam conflict was possible, as long as the U.S. continued to provide substantial military aid to South Vietnam and remained willing to provide all-important logistical and air support in the event of a future attack by the North Vietnamese Army.

According to Colby, the third (and most egregious) of America's major mistakes was the abandonment of South Vietnam by the U.S. Government--in particular, the U.S. Congress--after the January 1973 "peace" agreement. The decision by the U.S. Congress to cut military aid to South Vietnam after 1973 denied the necessary U.S. logistical and air support that the South Vietnamese Army needed to defeat the next invasion by the North Vietnamese Army in 1975.

Colby acknowledges that his account leaves out those aspects of the Vietnam War in which he did actively participate--namely, the military decisions, actual battles, and the post-Tet 1968 diplomacy which eventually led to the 1973 peace agreement. Despite being more of a personal memoir--rather than a comprehensive overview--Colby's story serves as a counterpoint to those who argue that the Vietnam War was unwinnable and that America's involvement in Vietnam was, therefore, a tragically misguided policy. Unlike the works of David Halberstam, Stanley Karnow and Neil Sheehan, Colby's book does not give short shrift to the successes achieved in South Vietnam after Tet 1968.

William Colby: an unsung hero.
By Tech Man
Any challenge to WE Colby's statements in his book Lost Victory can only come from far-left extremists with scant respect for facts, personal courage, moral values and dedication to a worthy cause. I was in Viet Nam during 1963-1972 and personally saw and experienced the war with my one eyes and ears. I can vouch for all the things that Mr. Colby described in his book. From 68 to 72, William Colby, Gen. Abrams and Ambassador Bunker, devised a winning formula to stabilize the political situation, eviscerate the VC infrastructure, and checkmate military attacks from the North VN army. Alas, all the good that those 3 men achieved was squandered at the Paris Peace Treaty in 73 by a man who was not a crook; a certain Herr Dr. K; by leftist elements of the 94th US Congress; and by the biased reporting of the US media (I saw plenty of civilians killed by VC and NVA in Hue during the Tet offensive for the crime of being pro-Saigon, but little of it was reported by the major US news channels). The end result was the first time in modern history that the USA suffered such a humiliating withdrawal, causing the subsequent death of 100 of 1000s who cast their lot with the USA during the war, and the suffering of millions of people who only yearned to live free, not to mention 58,000 American lives wasted in vain. It is amazing that those who criticize the US government and its allies never spend time experiencing North VN worker's paradise or the Soviet system. Almost as bad as the calumnies spewed by the left is the shabby treatment given to William Colby by the very system that he fought for and defended all his life: because he told the truth, he got fired. But for those who know what he accomplished during his years in Europe and in Asia, William Colby occupies a place which few can attain. RIP.

He Knew She Was Right: The Independent Woman in the Novels of Anthony Trollope (Ad Feminam: Women and Literature), by Professor Jane Nardi

Trollope’s mother, wife, and a friend he loved platonically most of his life provided him three very different views of the Victorian woman. And, according to Jane Nardin, they were responsible for the dramatic shift in his treatment of women in his novels.

This is the first book in Sandra Gilbert’s Ad Feminam series to examine a male author. Nardin initially analyzes the novels Trollope wrote from 1855 to 1861, in which male concerns are central to the plot and women are angelic heroines, submissive and self-sacrificing. Even the titles of his novels written during this period are totally male oriented. The Three Clerks, Doctor Thorne, and The Bertrams all refer to men. Shortly after meeting Kate Field, Trollope wrote Orley Farm, which refers to the estate an angry woman steals from her husband and which marks a change in the attitudes toward women evident in his novels.

His next four books, The Small House at Allington, Rachel Ray, Can You Forgive Her?, and Miss Mackenzie, prove that women’s concerns had become central in his writing. Nardin examines specific novels written from 1861 to 1865 in which Trollope, with increasing vigor, subverts the conventional notions of gender that his earlier novels had endorsed.

Nardin argues that his novels written after 1865 and often recognized as feminist are not really departures but merely refinements of attitudes Trollope exhibited in earlier works.

Should not disparage book for showcasing the students
By A Customer
The essays in this book are of markedly higher quality than the ones in the rest of the "successful essays" category. If you are going to feel bad by reading about other successful people, then you shouldn't buy this book. In that case, you shouldn't be applying to any top law schools either.

Should have been called "Who Got Into Harvard Law Sc hool"
By A Customer
This book seems to be have done with a minimum of effort. There is no "how" there is only "who". Only 55 pages of it were actually written by the author, and most of that is simply information he took from the Harvard catalog; things such as class offerings, parts of the application and what to do with them. There seems to be no advice whatsoever beyond the basic "only apply if you're really sure you want to go to law school". The only original insights he offers are 1) that he went there and 2) a short section (less than 10 pages) about the positives and negatives of Harvard. The rest of this 367 or so page book is composed of profiles of people who went there (in their exact words; they answer a bunch of questions and he just includes it in the book word for word) and a series of essays that these people wrote. The only benefit I can see from this book is that if you want a LOT of well written sample essays, this is a great place to start. However, one only needs a few to see what type of information and writing style is expected, the rest just serve to show just how good (and self absorbed in many cases) a lot of these people are.
I would definitely not recommend this book. It is even outdated; 5 years old now. With law school applications rising steadily since it was originally published and then up drastically this year, the "who" this books gives us may no longer even be representative of who is actually admitted. If pure voyeurism is your game, this book is great, but if you want "how" and actual useful advice try Richard Montauk's "How to get into the Top Law Schools". It has more useful advice in one page than this book has cover to cover.

not a guidebook
By Christine P
This book quite simply should not be titled "How to get into Harvard Law School." Rather, it should make reference to profiles of applicants who actually got into Harvard Law School. Epps's advice is fairly generic, telling the reader what HLS is like from a social and academic standpoint. He spends more time concentrating on details that the reader probably already knows by just visiting HLS's official website. Other than share some basic information concerning the university, he lacks in any comprehensive detail regarding increasing one's chances of getting admitted.
On the other hand, the profiles were useful and the applicants' essays were, if nothing more than remarkable, quite inspirational. The profiles were indeed intimidating, but I would assume that people who have considered buying this particular book are not necessarily the types to be easily scared off by soaring GPA's and perfect LSAT's. I would assume that they themselves know where they stand academically on whether they should even consider applying to Harvard in the first place. If I were you, consider borrowing this book from a local library or buying a used copy. The full price is not worth it. The year the book was made is also quite outdated and does not accurately reflect Harvard's statistics today.

Defining Reality: Definitions and the Politics of Meaning (Rhetorical Philosophy and Theory), by Professor Edward Schiappa PhD

In Defining Reality, Edward Schiappa argues that definitional disputes should be treated less as philosophical questions of “is” and more as sociopolitical questions of “ought.” Instead of asking “What is X?” he advocates that definitions be considered as proposals for shared knowledge and institutional norms, as in “What should count as X in context Y, given our needs and interests?”

Covering a broad scope of argument in rhetorical theory, as well as in legal, medical, scientific, and environmental debates, Schiappa shows the act of defining to be a specialized and learned behavior, and therefore one that can be studied and improved. In response to theories that deem discourse to be persuasive, the author asserts that all discourse is definitive discourse that contributes to our construction of a shared reality.

Defining Reality sheds light on our methods of creating common truths through language and argumentation and forces us to reconsider the contexts, limitations, and adaptability of our definitions. Hinging on a synthesis of arguments regarding the significance of definitional practices, the book is bolstered by a series of case studies of debates about rape, euthanasia, abortion, and political and environmental issues. These case studies ground Schiappa’s concepts in reality and delineate the power of public discourse within legal contexts. Ranging widely among disciplines from philosophy and classical philology to constitutional law and cognitive psychology, this study substantially contributes to the scholarship of rhetoric and argumentation, particularly as they function in the realm of public discourse.

An absolute must read
By Taylor Ellwood
This book has been influential in my professional and personal development. The author does an excellent job of exploring the power of definitions and why people need to carefully examine and critique the definitions presented to them, while also developing their own. I've applied the concepts of this book to my profession as well as my spirituality and have found both to be enriched by the concepts and definitions the author provides.
