Very Quick Read
By Aaron Schlaegel
The book is very sparse, with about 4 to 10 lines per page. The poems are presented in the translated English. If the original Greek were included, the book could be more of a display piece, and a bit more interesting to those who can read Ancient Greek.

The included illustrations are a bit odd, though I am sure they appeal to some.

Review of Winning Bowling, by Earl Anthony
By ksanchac@indiana.edu
Earl Anthony's book, Winning Bowling, has several positivepoints. First, I found his concept of spare shooting in this bookvery helpful. Anthony outlines in shooting spares four basicpositions: Strike Position (which also corresponds to Crossover Line), Left Center, Far Left, and Far Right. Anthony essentially takes samples of each spare group and demonstrates what foot position and angle would maximize conversion. I have applied this to my technique, and I have been having greater spare conversion success. However, I found his discussion of shooting Strike Angles, and in particular the first Arrow Angle, somewhat unclear. This book is not one which will aid you in adjusting to given lane conditions, but rather, how to execute each kind of strike shot. In the book, there is no discussion of oily or dry lane conditions. Also useful are the "super secrets", and his description of faults in the swing. I discovered from this book that one of the major faults in my own swing was side-wheeling, and this discovery helped me to swing the ball straighter, as well as save the skin on my thumb! For the advanced bowler, it may not have as much pertinent information, but for the beginning and intermediate bowler wanting to understand the swing a bit better, it is a good book to have on the shelf.

What You Didn't Know You Didn't Know.
By Caitlin Martin
Earl Anthony has managed to pack so much information into this book it's really hard to know where to start this review.
Let's concentrate on something that had never occured to me to ask my coach, among many others covered in this book.
What is lift? Here was the answer in black and white. It was also easy to follow the concept that Earl was trying to get across. Additionally, the simple demonstration that Earl uses in the book really makes the concept even more lucid. I finally see good rotation on my ball, and has it ever made a difference in how well the ball hits the pocket!
This aspect of the game that is so important for anyone who is just learning to throw a hook. Why was it so well kept a secret? It wasn't but I didn't think to ask, duh!!!
This book belongs on any bowling fans library shelves.

Another good book for beginners
By Jerry Weller s828555@jinx.umsl.edu
Nice book for beginners. Good anecdotes from Anthony which are fun to read.
A couple of nice tips about varying the action on the ball through the armswing and turning the sliding foot. Some nice vintage reverse shots of Anthony as a right hander.
If you're read one of Dawson Taylor's other books, you've pretty well read this one, except for the aforementioned action tips.

Health and the Rhetoric of Medicine, by Associate Professor Judy Z. Segal

Assessing rhetorical principles of contemporary health issues

Hypochondriacs are vulnerable to media hype, anorexics are susceptible to public scrutiny, and migraine sufferers are tainted with the history of the “migraine personality,” maintains rhetorical theorist Judy Z. Segal. All are influenced by the power of persuasion.

Health and the Rhetoric of Medicine explores persistent health conditions that resist conventional medical solutions. Using a range of rhetorical principles, Segal analyzes how patients and their illnesses are formed within the physician/patient relationship. The intractable problem of a patient’s rejection of a doctor’s advice, says Segal, can be considered a rhetorical failure—a failure of persuasion.

Examining the discourse of medicine through case studies, applications, and analyses, Segal illustrates how illnesses are described in ways that limit

patients’ choices and satisfaction. She also illuminates psychiatric conditions, infectious diseases, genetic testing, and cosmetic surgeries through the lens of rhetorical theory.

Health and the Rhetoric of Medicine bridges critical analysis for scholarly, professional, and lay audiences. Segal highlights the persuasive element in diagnosis, health policy, illness experience, and illness narratives. She also addresses questions of direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs, the role of health information in creating the “worried well” and problems of trust and expertise in physician/patient relationships. A useful resource for critical common sense in everyday life, the text provides an effective examination of a society increasingly influenced by the rhetoric of health and medicine.

Review
I confess that I nervously accepted the invitation to review Health and the Rhetoric of Medicine for this journal. What might it be? A tirade against the drug industry, where I have spent years consulting, and against which many assaults have been launched? Would it be an attack on Western medicine from someone committed to alternative medicine or herbalism or homeopathy? Would it argue in favor of health and wellness while opposing medical intervention and treatment?

The book is none of these things. Rather, Judy Z. Segal makes a strong contribution to medical rhetoric in a work that is well reasoned and ably argued, a work that methodically extends the province of rhetorical analysis in ways both insightful and useful. The primary theoretical grounding for her work is Aristotelian. Segal builds a kairology of biomedicine, examining the notions of contingency and fitness-to-situation as applied to current issues in health and medicine. Segal reads the situations of biomedicine across a range of contemporary discursive fora, asking why medical discourse takes the shapes it does, what purposes are served, who participates, what the situational contingencies are, and who controls or is controlled by the governing narratives. Her secondary theoretical allegiance is to Kenneth Burke, for she sees medical discourse as saturated with rhetoric, and she takes as her central purpose to convince the reader that humanities research should importantly influence medical policy setting and clinical practice. Segal investigates the terminological screens through which disease and treatment are viewed, offering readings of contemporary medical practice. Broadly, she investigates persuasion in oral and written discourse, extending her analysis beyond asking what constitutes an intellectually convincing argument to examine what actually motivates people to action. She is careful to note that her work is intended to be useful, though not necessarily in an applied sense. That is, Segal wants to be clear that she is not advising health benefits managers on how to communicate more successfully with clients. Rather, she seeks to illuminate the critical elements of situated discursive practice in health and medical environments.

Toward this purpose Segal investigates certain well-defined genres and situations that tend to produce highly patterned and often disabling discourses. In an early chapter, she discusses the situation of the migraineur as the patient has been constructed by various physician narratives, associated with false complaints, and given a reputation in the professional literature that could never quite be rehabilitated. In a chapter on "The Epideictic Rhetoric of Pathography," she again looks at narratives of illness, including self-representations on "pro-Ana" websites, where anorexia is portrayed as a lifestyle choice, not a disease, and where potential audiences who are not yet committed to the lifestyle are warned to stay away. In the same chapter, Segal examines the infantilization of women with breast cancer, citing Barbara Ehrenreich's Harper's essay ("Welcome to Cancerland: A Mammogram Leads to a Cult of Pink Kitsch." Harper's Magazine 302 [Nov. 2001]: 43–53), portraying Ehrenreich as the "renegade narrator, who refuses to tell a story of battling and enduring and overcoming, refuses to be relentlessly upbeat" (66). In these discussions Segal herself is shrewd, sharp, and incisive. She peels back the layers of symbolicity, revealing how our discourses come to govern our construction of ourselves as sick people and our construction of and by those attending our illnesses.

In a later chapter, "Hypochondria as a Medical Disorder," Segal argues that "discourse fills the space that medicine leaves unoccupied" (75). She traces the various constructions of the disorder historically, from an eighteenth-century notion of hypochondria as a "pitiable, organic distemper, featuring characteristic. ills from flatulence and fatigue to the distress of rumination on these complaints," a distress characteristic of men and constructed in opposition to the hysteria thought to describe women's conditions (76). She notes the increasing prevalence of cyberchondria, with sufferers matching their real or imagined symptoms with dire disease descriptions easily accessed online. Segal's discus; sion is lively, moving from Kant to Ms. magazine to contemporary medical research, attentive to psychiatric and sociological approaches to a pathetic condition that inspires sympathy. It is to Burke that Segal eventually turns, however, arguing for the usefulness of dramatism to illuminate hypochondria "in its humanity, its symbolicity, and its activity" (90). She asks not only what hypochondria is, but also what it does for those who have it.

Segal's topics of interest tend to center on conditions that resist clear medical diagnosis and treatment: erectile dysfunction, irritable bowel syndrome, depression. Such topics tend to take the discussion toward the fringes of modern medicine, an interesting if sometime inconclusive region to inhabit. In brief discussions she notes the increasing participation in recreational diagnostics, where with or without a physician's consult, one may pay for a battery of test results in a search to see if something might be wrong. At the true fringes, Segal explores the community of amputee wannabees. Her readings of these medical and disease communities always focus on the persuasive and constitutive act of naming a condition and providing a narrative space for people to inhabit that would not have existed without the naming and narrating.

Perhaps her most compelling chapter, at least for this reader, is "A Rhetoric of Death and Dying." Adopting a discourse analysis approach to her experience of the death of her own mother, Segal uses transcripts she created at the time, having written out the transcripts soon after she and her sister had medical conversations with attending physicians and psychiatrists. Her mother was clearly dying, proximally of complications of pneumonia, but more essentially from starvation and misery. The chapter chronicles a rhetoric of avoidance, of refusal to grant control or power to Segal and her sister, into whose hands her mother's care had been entrusted. Segal confronted a medical establishment that refused to face the imminence of death, that was unable to allow the conversations that should have transpired, and that continued to urge treatments of various sorts (shock therapy, drugs, neurological testing) in the face of death, extending the period of agony and debasement. Essentially, Segal establishes the taboo nature of discourses of death in institutions devoted to death:

During these three months, the subject of death in the context of the nursing home was taboo. The staff created no openings for it, and when the daughters broached the topic, they were quickly silenced. Evidently, the patient was too healthy to die, even if she was dying too inevitably for any but the most unimaginative interventions. (98)

Segal contrasts the allowable discourses in this setting with those in another hospital, where Segal acted as researcher in a setting where the explicit goal was to create the space and the language for dialogue, with a research team working toward a situation where both patients and doctors could find room for meaningful discussion of death and life. In this chapter Segal maps a role for the rhetorical critic.

This review suggests the interesting range of rhetorical investigations in this brief but insightful book. Segal has much to say in other chapters about how health policy is shaped by values and metaphors and how issues of patient noncompliance are shaped by the ethos of the physician. In each case Segal centers the discussion on the usefulness of a rhetoric of medicine, making a persuasive argument for an understanding of action as centered in discourse and controlled to some extent by discourse. Throughout, Segal writes with a deft hand and sharp analytic skills. The book is very much worth reading.

Bought this book for a graduate course. It is very, very interesting. Didn't give it 5 stars because it is an academic book which makes it not necessarily an easy read for everybody. Still, you will learn a lot.

Reads like multiple essays rather than a book
By ArthurDayne
There are some nice analytical moments in this book, but there is a sense that one is reading journal articles rather than a larger coherent argument.

Air Transport Labor Relations (Southern Illinois University Press Series in Aviation Management), by Robert W. Kaps

Robert W. Kaps examines air transport labor law in the United States as well as the underlying legislative and policy directives established by the federal government. The body of legislation governing labor relations in the private sector of the U.S. economy consists of two separate and distinct acts: the Railway Labor Act (RLA), which governs labor relations in the railroad and airline industries, and the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), which governs labor relations in all other industrial sectors.

Although the NLRA closely follows the pattern established by the RLA, Kaps notes that the two laws are distinguishable in several important areas. Labor contracts negotiated under the RLA continue in perpetuity, for example, whereas all other labor contracts expire at a specified date. Other important areas of difference relate to the collective bargaining process itself, the procedures for the arbitration of disputes and grievances, and the spheres of authority and jurisdiction to consider such matters as unfair labor practices.

Congress established a special labor law for railroad and airline workers for several reasons. Because of transportation’s critical importance to the economy, an essential goal of public policy has been to ensure that both passenger and freight transportation services continue without interruption. Production can cease—at least temporarily—in most other industries without causing significant harm to the economy. When transportation stops, however, production stops. Thus Congress saw fit to enact a statute that contained provisions to ensure that labor strife would not halt rail services. Primarily because of the importance of air mail transportation, the Railway Labor Act of 1926 was extended to the airline industry in 1936.

The first section of this book introduces labor policy and presents a history of the labor movement in the United States. Discussing early labor legislation, Kaps focuses on unfair labor practices and subsequent major labor statutes.

The second section provides readers with a comparison of labor provisions that apply to the railroad and airline industries as well as to the remainder of the economy.

The final section centers on the evolution of labor in the airline industry. The author pays particular attention to recent events affecting labor in commercial aviation, particularly the effect of airline deregulation on airline labor.

"The ability to provide uninterrupted transportation service is vital to national defense and economic growth. In most other industries, production can cease, at least temporarily, without causing any significant negative impact on the general economy. But when transportation stops, production stops, making continuous service a national necessity."—Robert W. Kaps, from the Preface

The book may have been good (in it's day).
By KJB
However, I wasted my money because it was outdated, at no fault of the seller.
The college had it on the list and then updated their list, forcing everyone in class to purchase new books, and not just one, but two. I was allowed to return this book in a certain amount of time after contacting the seller. However, I had no access to a printer, so I got stuck with it. It kind of irks me, but it was definitely not the fault of the seller I want to make that clear.

Harry Truman and Civil Rights: Moral Courage and Political Risks, by Adjunct Professor Michael Gardner

Given his background, President Truman was an unlikely champion of civil rights. Where he grew up—the border state of Missouri—segregation was accepted and largely unquestioned. Both his maternal and paternal grandparents had owned slaves, and his mother, victimized by Yankee forces, railed against Abraham Lincoln for the remainder of her ninety-four years. When Truman assumed the presidency on April 12, 1945, Michael R. Gardner points out, Washington, DC, in many ways resembled Cape Town, South Africa, under apartheid rule circa 1985.

Truman’s background notwithstanding, Gardner shows that it was Harry Truman—not Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, or John F. Kennedy—who energized the modern civil rights movement, a movement that basically had stalled since Abraham Lincoln had freed the slaves. Gardner recounts Truman’s public and private actions regarding black Americans. He analyzes speeches, private conversations with colleagues, the executive orders that shattered federal segregation policies, and the appointments of like-minded civil rights activists to important positions. Among those appointments was the first black federal judge in the continental United States.

One of Gardner’s essential and provocative points is that the Frederick Moore Vinson Supreme Court—a court significantly shaped by Truman—provided the legal basis for the nationwide integration that Truman could not get through the Congress. Challenging the myth that the civil rights movement began with Brown v. Board of Education under Chief Justice Earl Warren, Gardner contends that the life-altering civil rights rulings by the Vinson Court provided the necessary legal framework for the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision.

Gardner characterizes Truman’s evolution from a man who grew up in a racist household into a president willing to put his political career at mortal risk by actively supporting the interests of black Americans.

Review

“Gardner, a practicing lawyer and [former] adjunct professor at Georgetown University, sets the record straight on the part that our thirty-third president played in the struggle for racial equality. His well-documented conclusions will astonish even many of those whose memories go back to the period of which he writes.”

—New York Law Journal

“[A] compelling account of Truman as a civil rights advocate because it was the right—not politically expedient—position for America following World War II. . . Harry Truman—the lifelong civil rights activist—cared for and was admired by not only the common citizens but also the forgotten ones.”—ForeWord

“[A] persuasive brief to argue that Harry Truman was the 20th century’s best president in terms of civil rights—the true successor to the Great Emancipator. . . . Gardner’s first book is highly recommended.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“Harry Truman and Civil Rights is an exceptional read. This book will reaffirm Truman’s position as an important figure in the African American quest for equality.”—The Baltimore Afro-American

“This is truly a remarkable book. I doubt that anybody in the instant history business like myself fully understood that the bedrock of Harry Truman was human rights. Nuclear weapons, Greek-Turkish aid, Marshall plan, Berlin airlift were all acquired tastes, imposed on him by a world running madly at warp speed. But beneath everything, as Gardner notes, was the feeling rooted in his soul that all humans regardless of color, race, or creed deserved equal treatment.”

—Hugh Sidey, Chair and CEO of the White House Historical Association

“Harry Truman and Civil Rights presents a riveting account of the little-known, yet pivotal role President Harry Truman played in the cause for civil rights. . . . President Truman’s bravery and dogged determination opened many doors and forever changed the course of history. This book is a tribute to the visionary courage displayed by this statesman who began laying the foundation to right the horrific injustices that prevailed against people of color during his time.”

—Kweisi Mfume, NAACP President and CEO

“This book tells the story of a native son of Missouri who put everything at risk to achieve a moral good. Truman’s very personal crusade for civil rights divided his party, alienated the South, and nearly cost him his presidency. His moral courage is an example for all elected officials and a lesson for all Americans.”                   —Missouri Senator Jean Carnahan

“Harry Truman’s convictions, commitment, and courage are admirably recounted by Michael Gardner. He describes the actions that flowed from them. He recalls long overlooked actions taken by the Department of Justice at Truman’s direction. He pointedly contrasts Truman’s courage with the timidity of his two immediate successors and reminds us of the belated conversion of Lyndon Johnson to the course Truman had advocated years earlier. . . .Truman had the courage. He took the risks. All of us are indebted to him.”—George M. Elsey, administrative assistant to President Truman

American Goddess at the Rape of Nanking: The Courage of Minnie Vautrin, by Hua-ling Hu

The Japanese army’s brutal four-month occupation of the city of Nanking during the 1937 Sino-Japanese War is known, for good reason, as “the rape of Nanking.” As they slaughtered an estimated three hundred thousand people, the invading soldiers raped more than twenty thousand women—some estimates run as high as eighty thousand. Hua-ling Hu presents here the amazing untold story of the American missionary Minnie Vautrin, whose unswerving defiance of the Japanese protected ten thousand Chinese women and children and made her a legend among the Chinese people she served.

Vautrin, who came to be known in China as the “Living Goddess” or the “Goddess of Mercy,” joined the Foreign Christian Missionary Society and went to China during the Chinese Nationalist Revolution in 1912. As dean of studies at Ginling College in Nanking, she devoted her life to promoting Chinese women’s education and to helping the poor.

At the outbreak of the war in July 1937, Vautrin defied the American embassy’s order to evacuate the city. After the fall of Nanking in December, Japanese soldiers went on a rampage of killing, burning, looting, rape, and torture, rapidly reducing the city to a hell on earth. On the fourth day of the occupation, Minnie Vautrin wrote in her diary: “There probably is no crime that has not been committed in this city today. . . . Oh, God, control the cruel beastliness of the soldiers in Nanking.”

When the Japanese soldiers ordered Vautrin to leave the campus, she replied: “This is my home. I cannot leave.” Facing down the blood-stained bayonets constantly waved in her face, Vautrin shielded the desperate Chinese who sought asylum behind the gates of the college. Vautrin exhausted herself defying the Japanese army and caring for the refugees after the siege ended in March 1938. She even helped the women locate husbands and sons who had been taken away by the Japanese soldiers. She taught destitute widows the skills required to make a meager living and provided the best education her limited sources would allow to the children in desecrated Nanking.

Finally suffering a nervous breakdown in 1940, Vautrin returned to the United States for medical treatment. One year later, she ended her own life. She considered herself a failure.

Hu bases her biography on Vautrin’s correspondence between 1919 and 1941 and on her diary, maintained during the entire siege, as well as on Chinese, Japanese, and American eyewitness accounts, government documents, and interviews with Vautrin’s family.

From Publishers Weekly
Minnie Vautrin was a Christian missionary, a teacher and an administrator at Ginling College in Nanking. Having arrived in China in 1912 at the age of 26, she worked tirelessly for nearly 30 years to expand and maintain the school, to educate Chinese women and to improve the lot of the city's poor. But she served her adopted country best during the Japanese occupation of Nanking in 1937, when the city and its citizens were ravaged by the Japanese. During the occupation, Japanese soldiers raped an estimated 20,000 women; that number would have been higher were it not for Vautrin. Turning the Ginling campus into a sanctuary for 10,000 women and children, she created a small international safety zone. She stood up to the soldiers who demanded women to brutalize, and she did her best to negotiate with their superiors to keep her haven safe. She also brought order and hope to the refugees' lives by organizing classes, as well as Christmas and other celebrations. In the early 1940s, however, Vautrin, feeling like a failure, committed suicide. Unfortunately, despite the drama of Vautrin's story and Hu's use of Vautrin's own letters and diaries, the prose here is dry and almost dispassionate, often bogging down in the details of school administration. Iris Chang's recent The Rape of Nanking is a far more poignant account of this period, to which this book mostly serves as a supplement. Photos, maps. (Mar.)

From Library Journal
Amidst the rape and carnage of the Nanking Massacre (1937-38), in which more than 300,000 Chinese were slaughtered by Japanese troops, a score of Western residents labored tirelessly to save the lives of Chinese trapped in the doomed capital. The name of Minnie Vautrin, an American missionary educator, is indelibly inscribed on this honor list of foreigners who saw China as their home and Chinese as their fellow humans. Vautrin, a Midwestern farm girl called to missionary service, devoted her life to the education of Chinese women at Ginling College, one of the better-known of scores of Christian colleges in China. In the cauldron of horror that Nanking became, Vautrin, a tower of moral strength, turned Ginling into a sanctuary for 10,000 women and girls, who honored her as their Goddess of Mercy. Hu tells Vautrin's inspirational story in spare but powerful prose. This book deserves a wide audience and belongs in every public and academic library.

From Booklist
Where Iris Chang's The Rape of Nanking (1997) circulated or where there's curiosity about the work of American missionaries in China before World War II, this biography of Minnie Vautrin, a missionary and educator who displayed courage and compassion in sheltering Chinese women and children at the women's college she headed in the early days of the Japanese occupation, will find readers. Vautrin grew up in rural central Illinois. She worked her way through college and, later, graduate school, taking up elementary education in China in 1912. In 1919, Vautrin was named interim administrator of Nanking's Ginling College, an educational institute for Chinese women, controlled and supported by several Protestant denominations. Hu's primary sources are Vautrin's correspondence (1919^-41) and the diary she maintained during the Nanking siege; the author also draws on government documents, eyewitness accounts by Chinese, Japanese, and American observers, and interviews with Vautrin's family. Hu's style is not graceful, but she succeeds in imparting a clear enough sense of Chinese history to place Vautrin's notable career in context. Mary Carroll

Moving biography with meticulous historical background
By Terry Mathias
Author Hua-ling Hu presents the deeply moving biography of an American educator/missionary who remained in Nanking to help thousands of women and children facing death. I could not set down the book until I finished it, then I started again in order to gain a keen appreciation for the thorough historical scholarship using sources that have not been available until Hu brought them to our eyes. This book should be read by historians, by missionaries, by anyone interested in fascinating biographies -- it is a compelling story with exceptional historical scholarship as the backdrop.

The American warrior of the Greatest Generation
By Walter W. Ko
Minnie Vautrin was a lady with compassion. She devoted her life in bringing education to Chinese women and girls in 1920s to 30s. She was well remembered not only by the people of Nanking but also by all Chinese people. During the Rape of Nanking committed by the invading of Japansese military in 1937, she risked her life in protecting over ten thousand women and girls in her campus. This book showed her courage. It was a remarkable story of the female over the male, the weak over the strong, the peace over violence. However, over the past sixty years, not many Americans know of this woman of humanity and internationalism. In 2001, I had the good fortune to attend her memorial at Shephard, Michigan with a small group of friends and her relatives. I delivered a brief paper on behalf of the citizens of Nanking for their respect and love to her. Dr Bates, another international team members son of 1937 delivered the grave site prayer.
As Americans, you should not miss this woman of the greatest generation. In December 13 2002, a statue will be set up in Naking to honor this American to China.
In 2004, Missouri House, City of St Louis and City of Overland made Proclamation on her birthday as Ginling Forever, Minnie Vautrin Day. In 2005, Illinois Governor honored her on her birthday and called for citizens of Illinois to follow her example. In September 27 2006, California Congressman Mike Honda introduced her on the floor for a Celebration Resolution - a significant gift for her 120 years birthday!
In 2003, with a group of friends, we set up Friends of Minnie Vautrin Scholarship Project to raise funds to honor her and her mission of Chinese women education in her Ginling College through United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. [...]

Courage
By Northern Wanderer
Minnie Vautrin died at 55, by her own hands. Today we would call it post traumatic stress syndrome. Sometimes people have seen too much and given too much and they can't carry it all. Today Minnie Vautrin is remembered for the hope in Nanking she gave when all seemed lost before world war II as the Japanese invaded China.

Imagine being a simple school teacher from the Mid West, sent as a missionary to China to teach. Suddenly your school becomes a haven for 10,000 women who seek shelter against the invading Japanese Army. Vautrin could not even finish a meal or sleep a night without going out to fight off Japanese soldiers intent on hauling off Chinese girls from the international compound that had been declared a safe haven. She was slapped and pistol whipped. She was threatened repeatedly. She went without sleep. She went repeatedly to the Japenese authorities to protest. She even grabbed girls from the clutches of soldiers.

In the broader story, twenty four foreigners, including a Nazi German named John Rabe, saved 200 hundred thousand Chinese from extermination in a 3.8 km square safety zone in Nanking. The foreigners could have walked away. Instead they broke up rape attemtps, were pistol wiped, beaten, threatened at gun point. Unfortunately another 300,000 Chinese were killed, and at least 20,000 were raped, including grandmothers of 80 and girls as young as nine.

American missionaries in China have a mixed record. Those who stayed and saved the Chinese at Nanking have earned a special place in China's history. This book explains this history. If you want to understand China, this is worth reading.

Volker Schlondorff's Cinema: Adaptation, Politics, and the

A study of 28 films by the major postwar German director, Volker Schlondorff, examining them in historical, economic and artistic contexts. The authors seek to reveal a complexity and formal ambitiousness of Schlondorff that is comparable to that found in Wenders, Herzog and Fassbinder. The work demonstrates how Schlondorff: combines commercial interest with significant artistic ambition; blends the kinaesthetic pleasures of moving images with the seriousness of fine literature; links the intensity of individualized personal experience to an awareness of broader political issues; and represents a specifically German sensibility even as he reaches out to international audiences.

Review
"Volker Schlondorff's Cinema: Adaptation, Politics, and the 'Movie-Appropriate' is the first comprehensive treatment in English of a major postwar German filmmaker. The volume gains authority from the expansive knowledge it introduces about Schlondorff's works and from the secondary literature it draws on to evaluate them. It also succeeds in framing the individual films in historical contexts and (Inter)national cinematic traditions." - Marc Silberman, University of Wisconsin-Madison

The Later Works of John Dewey, Volume 1, 1925 - 1953: 1925, Experience and Nature (Later Works of John Dewey, 1925-1953), by John Dewey

John Dewey’s Experience and Nature has been considered the fullest expression of his mature philosophy since its eagerly awaited publication in 1925.Irwin Edman wrote at that time that “with monumental care, detail and completeness, Professor Dewey has in this volume revealed the metaphysical heart that beats its unvarying alert tempo through all his writings, whatever their explicit themes.” In his introduction to this volume, Sidney Hook points out that “Dewey’s Experience and Nature is both the most suggestive and most difficult of his writings.”

The meticulously edited text published here as the first volume in the series The Later Works of John Dewey, 1925–1953spans that entire period in Dewey’s thought by including two important and previously unpublished documents from the book’s history: Dewey’s unfinished new introduction written between 1947and 1949,edited by the late Joseph Ratner, and Dewey’s unedited final draft of that introduction written the year before his death. In the intervening years Dewey realized the impossibility of making his use of the word “experience” understood. He wrote in his 1951draft for a new introduction: “Were I to write (or rewrite) Experience and Nature today I would entitle the book Culture and Nature and the treatment of specific subject-matters would be correspondingly modified. I would abandon the term ‘experience’ because of my growing realization that the historical obstacles which prevented understanding of my use of ‘experience’ are, for all practical purposes, insurmountable. I would substitute the term ‘culture’ because with its meanings as now firmly established it can fully and freely carry my philosophy of experience.”

tClasic of American Philosophy

This book should be read by anyone in an exiting approach to philosophical questions. Although written between the world wars, it is as relevant to todsay's problems as it was then. The style is somewhat awkward.
