Legends of Glory and Other Stories, by Harry Mark Petrakis

Legends of Glory and Other Stories contains a novella and eight short stories by award-winning author Harry Mark Petrakis. In a departure from his previous, highly regarded work, Petrakis offers a fresh new perspective in the novella, “Legends of Glory.” For the first time Petrakis deals with the traditions and emotions of a small Midwestern town caught in the whirlwind of the Iraq War. In a communal rite of mourning, each character embodies a different voice, a different perspective, in regard to patriotism and pacifism. Although the novella relates to the sacrifice of a young man, the grieving of parents, and the conflicts of a family, it explores human sorrow and anger unchanged from the time of the Trojan War.
In a return to his earlier lyrical prose style, Petrakis also treats us to eight beautifully crafted short stories. “Beauty’s Daughter” introduces a sullen-spirited Greek bakery owner and his lovely, more amiable wife.
“The Birthday” considers the fear that most people have of the emotional and physical decline that the years bring and the reconciliation with death.
In “The Wisdom of Solon,” Solon, who does not realize that life cannot be neatly categorized within the mysterious relationships between men and women, finds that every action sets in motion a series of often bewildering consequences.
The question of a proper marriage match and the struggle to make the right choice mark “The Rousing of Mathon Sarlas.” And the longing to believe that something survives our mortal bodies even if reason dictates otherwise is central to “A Dishwasher’s Tale.”
Completing the collection are “Christina’s Summer,” “Rites of Passage,” and “A Tale of Color,” which are also presented in an inviting prose style and individualized by engaging characters to provide readers with a cumulative sense of culture, geography, and sensibility.

Review
“Legends of Glory is a masterpiece, a commentary as well as a history of the present era.”—Fr. Andrew M. Greeley, author of The Senator and the Priest

The new collection of writing by Harry Mark Petrakis, "Legends of Glory and Other Stories," couples eight short stories with a novella. The beautifully crafted stories featuring Chicago Greeks are vintage Petrakis that reaffirm his mastery of this genre. In the novella, "Legends of Glory," Petrakis explores an entirely different social environment. The principals are mainstream Americans living in a small Midwestern town. The fiction of Petrakis always has had a social subtext, but this new work shows heightened attention to some mof the social ills afflicting the specific Greek American community and the United States in general.

Harry Mark Petrakis has authored 20 books, including novels, memoirs and collections of short stories and essays. He first burst into American consciousness in the 1956 when his story "Pericles on 31st Street" was published in the prestigious Atlantic Monthly and then adapted for use in one of the dramatic television shows of that era. With the publication of "A Dream of Kings" 10 years later, Petrakis became a best-selling novelist. That work was the basis of a motion picture of the same name released in 1969 with Anthony Quinn and Irene Papas in the starring roles.

Petrakis likes to speak of himself as a storyteller even though he ,knows that is not a fashionable designation these days. I-le likes to write about recognizable people in recognizable settings experiencing recognizable emotions. Some of his characters are able to change: as circumstances change, but he frequently deals with the tragedy of those unable or unwilling to change. He is a firm advocate of the idea that authors should work hard to make the reading of their work as accessible as possible. When one is successful in that endeavor, as Petrakis so often is, there is a danger of the stories being read too quickly. Ernest Hemingway, another advocate of simplicity of style, complained that readers often mistake dense prose for density of thought while assuming that something that is easily read lacks depth. Some critics have made that error regarding Petrakis, categorizing him as an artist whose appeal is largely limited to ethnic or regional audiences. Fellow writers have not been so foolish. His work his been praised by John Cheever, Kurt Vonnegut, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Mark Van Doren and Elie Wiesel, among others. He has twice been nominated for the National Book Award in Fiction.

THE GREEK AMERICANSTORIES

Petrakis prefaces each story in "Legends of Glory and Other Stories" with a few paragraphs that discuss the real-life circumstances that inspired the writing. This anecdotal material enhances the stories by making a vital connection between the real life of Greek America as lived by Petrakis and the Greek America of his fiction. Wisdom does not necessarily accrue with age, but the octogenarian Petrakis writes with enormous compassion for his characters, a sense of the travails of everyday life that has grown keener with his advancing years.

These are traditional stories with a beginning, middle and an end. We want to know what is going to happen. But much of the richness of the writing comes in the sly commentary by Petrakis about our life in America and the vagaries of human mortality. The characters often carry classic names that suggest historical and mythological parallels. But the disciplined Petrakis does not let those echoes disrupt his narrative. They simply offer additional coloring to the events at hand.

Some aspect of sexuality is the theme in many of the tales. The events of "Beauty's Daughter" are told by a daughter whose mother bore the name Aphrodite and was the wife of a baker. Her marriage was not happy, leading to a brief affair with grocer. The story, grounded in the nature and need for physical love, ultimately is about the empowerment of a mother and daughter through the most unlikely of circumstances.

Romance is the main concern of “A Tale of Color” as well.  The lovers in this instance are Denzel, an African American from Chicago, and Sofia, a village girl Denzel meets while serving in Greece as a soldier in the 1950s.  They marry and relocate to Chicago.  Denzel’s parents reject the couple outright and the Greeks are distant.  Petrakis shrewdly avoids the use of horrible Ku Klux Klan types.  The problem is not this or that unsavory individual, but a society whose social structure was not prepared to accommodate such a couple.  “The Birthday” deals with the trauma of reaching age 75 while “Christina’s Summer” deals with a sexual moment of truth for a 13-year-old boy.  What is striking about these tales in which age plays a prominent factor is the rich nuance and context of the telling.  Using a straightforward narrative for “The Birthday” and a retrospective voice for “Christina’s Summer,” Petrakis adroitly captures the impact of the various ages at play.

“Rites of Passage” take places in a Halstead street restaurant.  Sofoula, the owner’s daughter, and Panos, a waiter, become attracted to one another.  At one point, after some naïve talk about sexuality, Sofoula impetuously exposes her breasts to Panos, an action she immediately regrets.  Panos, too, is embarrassed by her behavior.  How that incident reveals the loneliness and frustration on which their mutual attraction is based is the central focus of the story.  Further enriching the tale, however, is the candor Petrakis brings to his discussion of relationships in a Greek restaurant.  When Panos decides to change his life entirely, Petrakis informs us: “He felt confidant that he’d make his way and find another position where he wouldn’t be at the beck and call of anyone with a few dollars for a plate of gyros and a Greek salad.  He would never again have to flame the platters of saganaki and cry the foolish “Oppaaa!” again.”

“A Dishwasher’s Tale” is told by a dishwasher whose best friend sells hot dogs from a pushcart.  The dishwasher is a cynic of sorts, but the hot dog seller feels the events of ancient history as if they were current news.  As he explains to the dishwasher, “You are an earthbound creature! You don’t allow yourself to take wing and dream!” The relationship of the hot dog seller with his son is wretched and his life seems barren, yet when he dies and the dishwasher goes to his gravesite, there is a magical moment in which the world of myth asserts itself.

Older men who consider marrying younger women are the subject of "The Wisdom of Solon" and "The Rousing of Mathon Sarlas." In "The Wisdom of Solon" such a marriage takes place with many unforeseen consequences. In the other story, Mathon, aged 55 and a widower for 10 years, wants to marry a younger woman but fears she may come to resent him due to the gap in their ages. He is concerned that such a resentment could become a hatred, causing him a hurt that would be far worse than the loneliness he now feels.

THE LEGENDS OF GLORY

"Legends of Glory" breaks new ground in the work of Harry Mark Petrakis. It .is the longest work he has ever done involving non-Greek characters. More significantly, it is a. novella dealing with the most important political issues of our time. "Legends of Glory" is further distinguished by being one of the first novels by an American about contemporary debates regarding American political morality in the wake of 9-11.

Dan and Molly Scott, moderately liberal Democrats, live in Plainsfield, Indiana, a moderately conservative Republican town. Dan is a high school teacher who frequently uses Greek classics as texts. Noah, their only child, is a typical American teenager. He starred in high school football and worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken to make pocket money. Thomas Joshua Scott, Dan's father, a veteran of World War II, won a Medal of Honor for bravery on Omaha Beach on D-Day.

The Scott family has a proud military tradition. A glass case in the Scott household is filled with medals and ribbons won by generations of Scott warriors who have fought in every American conflict since the civil war of 1861-1865. The only reason Dan never served in the military was that he came of military age during the peaceful decades between the two world wars.

Thomas Joshua lived with Dan and Molly for many years, but due to medical problems moved to a veteran's home while in his 80s. During the years when the family lived under one roof, Noah, like many boys, felt closer to his grandfather than to his father. Noah was particularly entranced by the war stories Thomas Joshua told with considerable flourish. Molly was never pleased with that circumstance. After Thomas told a tale about what napalm does to the human body, Molly commented that his stories were "sickly and unnatural." Dan responded that his father was just a good storyteller.

The narrative of "Legends of Glory," which focuses on the behavior of  the Sc Scotts in the aftermath of the attack of 9-11, is not as seamlessly rendered as the narratives in the short stories. Petrakis has not quite figured out how to elegantly work in all the political data needed to drive the story. The names, as-in the Greek stories, often carry echoes. A family of Scots with a warrior tradition reside in a town called Plainfield, and all the men in the family have names with distinctive biblical associations.

At the time of the Gore-Bush election, Molly and Dan, although a bit embarrassed by President Clinton... (Dan Georgakas The National Herald 20080223)

Great read
By Catherine
This book initially followed Petrakis style. That being the traditional Greek tales. The last story was very emotional and involves you in a family situation whereby an only son joins the Marines to fight in the Iraq war. The reader becomes one of the family. Petraeus does an admirable job in conveying the emotions of the characters.

As an adult educaction instructor, I use this textbook in my classroom on a daily basis. Students seem to prefer the five-subject format of this text to the single-subject format of my other texts. This text gives just enough information; not too little and not too much (which is a problem with single-subject texts).

From Publishers Weekly
Professor of literature at Cornell University, Grossvogel cites his "insatiable interest in popular culture" as the impetus for this look at Esther Pauline ("Eppie") Lederer, popular "Dear Ann" columnist. His interview with the forthright, witty, empathetic journalist reveals her as a proverbial Jewish mother, raised, she notes, on solid Midwestern values. Selections from the columns printed here reflect changes both in social issues and Landers's advice since the topsy-turvy 1960s. Her counsel reflects her basic common sense, even on controversial topics; her readers write her about matters as disparate as funding for cancer research, child care, how to make meat loaf or hang toilet paper. Landers expresses pride at the multiple honors she has received as the most widely syndicated columnist, most influential woman in America, etc. Also recipient of such awards is Dear Ann's rival and twin Dear Abby, who isn't mentioned in the book.

Cold Warriors: Manliness on Trial in the Rhetoric of the West, by Suzanne Clark

Cold Warriors: Manliness on Trial in the Rhetoric of the West returns to familiar cultural forces—the West, anticommunism, and manliness—to show how they combined to suppress dissent and dominate the unruliness of literature in the name of a national identity after World War II. Few realize how much the domination of a “white male” American literary canon was a product not of long history, but of the Cold War. Suzanne Clark describes here how the Cold War excluded women writers on several levels, together with others—African American, Native American, poor, men as well as women—who were ignored in the struggle over white male identity.

Clark first shows how defining national/individual/American identity in the Cold War involved a brand new configuration of cultural history. At the same time, it called upon the nostalgia for the old discourses of the West (the national manliness asserted by Theodore Roosevelt) to claim that there was and always had been only one real American identity.

By subverting the claims of a national identity, Clark finds, many male writers risked falling outside the boundaries not only of public rhetoric but also of the literary world: men as different from one another as the determinedly masculine Ernest Hemingway and the antiheroic storyteller of the everyday, Bernard Malamud. Equally vocal and contentious, Cold War women writers were unwilling to be silenced, as Clark demonstrates in her discussion of the work of Mari Sandoz and Ursula Le Guin.

The book concludes with a discussion of how the silencing of gender, race, and class in Cold War writing maintained its discipline until the eruptions of the sixties. By questioning the identity politics of manliness in the Cold War context of persecution and trial, Clark finds that the involvement of men in identity politics set the stage for our subsequent cultural history.

Review

“This provocative and wide-ranging study makes an important contribution to the growing scholarship on Cold War masculinity. Drawing on postcolonial and feminist theory, Clark shows how the ‘cold warrior subject’ was always at risk.”

—Robert J. Corber, author of Homosexuality in Cold War America: Resistance and the Crisis of Masculinity

Rhetoric exposed...and continued
By lisa rathje
Suzanne Clark's newest study Cold Warriors: Manliness on Trial in the Rhetoric of the West, engages the reader in the critical task of understanding of how gender and cultural history effects audiences and texts by looking at both the events and some of the writers during the Cold War period. The importance of Cold Warriors, both for scholars of Cold War texts and those of more contemporary texts, lies in its close reading of history and historical literary texts to help the reader understand the link between politics and literature. However, the book's problem lies in its inability to move beyond the rhetoric it exposes.
Written by an academic for an academic audience, Clark's book is an attempt to rewrite the history of gender so that readings of other marginalized writers are heard. Clark's book is to be applauded for looking at a source of the problem behind the oppression of women and minority writers and not settling for the seemingly easy answer that the males in this society were not open to these other writers. Her more radical thesis that it was the government and the academic institutions who worked to place the white male as the national subject, the "cold warrior" who was to be the "hyper-male: reasonable, penetrating, vigorous, and healthy," (25) takes the control away from the males and places it on the bureaucracy. This helps explain how even some men who were writing, such as Hemingway, fell out of favor during this period as well. This careful look at politics and literature is only the beginning of a discussion that could be continued with texts of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century as well.
The first couple of chapters do a good job of outlining the background history that will set up her reading of the texts in the later chapters. Chapter one, "The Un-American and the Unreal: Modern Bodies and New Frontiers," provides an analysis relating to the oversimplified social logic of the postwar era and the gendering of ideologies. Especially of interest is her discussion of the resistance by the wide public concerning the conformity promoted by the Cold War rhetoric that led to a break that still exists today between the public and the intellectual sphere. Clark argues that the efforts of the "Cold War consensus" critics led to the "recolonizing of American cultural history in the name of freedom" (36). Chapter two, "Cold War Modernism and the Crisis of Story," takes this history and applies to the academics of the time. The literary canon is shown to be defined by Cold War rhetoric that used fear of the Other and the myth of gendered national identity. Women, minority, and revolutionary writers became subversive to academia simply because of the structures of the times.
The last four chapters deal with the texts specifically in the context of the times. The in-depth and close attention that she gives to each of these writers is valuable in helping the reader understand some of the issues of the writers during this time period. However, a problem with Clark's book emerges at this point: It participates in the same system it wants to critique without any apologies. Clark choose four authors, a white male, two white women, and one white Jewish man in a study that proposes to answer the questions: "What produced the invisibility of ethnic and racial identities?" and "What accounts for the Cold War silencing of women and nonwhite peoples?" (6) The same question can be turned back onto Clark's book: Where are the nonwhite authors? This is a serious gap in a book that tries to fill in some of America's missing or suppressed history. As a critique there is so much more that Clark could have said, but instead she became too caught up in her own theorizing of authors that best promoted what her writing of history concerned.
Another telling problem lies within her continuing use of the warrior construct. The conclusion finds that the "logic of projection and a linearity of historical narrative imposed a rigid framework that put manhood into crisis," (207) yet Clark then continues to use a key symbol of this logic, the warrior: "The reiterative structures of mixed, recovered, and translated stories may help us to relocate the warrior-within. A return to Theodore Roosevelt or Ernest Hemingway or John Wayne does not necessarily portend a renewal of the old Cold War fables of manliness, I hope I have shown, but rather acknowledgment and recognition." (207) This reviewer feels that by acknowledging and recognizing the warrior, the rhetoric surrounding the warrior is promoted rather than destroyed. Clark's intent of writing a multicultural study to define how Identity is constructed through politics and literature is hurt by her inability to move beyond the constructed Identity of the warrior from this time period. A renewal of the myth of manliness she may avoid in this book, but she falls short of moving completely away from the rhetoric. So while Clark's latest book succeeds as an in-depth critique of four specific authors during the Cold War, it falls short of being a wide-ranging multicultural critique of the effect government and academic rhetoric has had on the reading of texts that don't conform to the bureaucratic constraints of the times.

The Real Nick and Nora: Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, Writers of Stage and Screen Classics, by Mr. David L Goodrich

Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett wrote the screenplays for some of America’s most treasured movies, including It’s a Wonderful Life, The Thin Man, Easter Parade, Father of the Bride, Naughty Marietta, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Legendary films, indeed, but writing both the play and screenplay for The Diary of Anne Frank was their crowning achievement.

Controlled chaos best describes their writing method. They discussed a scene at length, sometimes acting it out. Afterwards, they each wrote a draft, which they exchanged. “Then,” Frances said, “began ‘free criticism’—which sometimes erupted into screaming matches.” Noisy and contentious, the method worked splendidly.

Enormously successful and remarkably prolific, Goodrich and Hackett began their thirty-four-year collaboration in 1928. Married after the first of their five plays became a hit, they were in many ways an unlikely pair. Frances, the privileged daughter of well-to-do parents, graduated from Vassar, then played minor parts on Broadway. Albert’s mother put him on stage at age five, when his father died, to help pay the bills, and he became a highly paid comedian.

The Hacketts were known for their wit and high spirits and the pleasure of their Bel Air dinner parties. They waged memorable battles with their powerful bosses and were key activists in the stressful creation of the Screen Writers Guild. Once they had created Nick and Nora Charles, The Thin Man’s bright, charming, sophisticated lead couple, played memorably by William Powell and Myrna Loy, many people saw a strong resemblance, and the Hacketts acknowledged that they “put themselves into” Nick and Nora.

The Real Nick and Nora is a dazzling assemblage of anecdotes featuring some of the most talented writers and the brightest lights of American stage and screen. The work was arduous, the parties luminous. On any given night the guests singing and acting out scripts at a party might include F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sheilah Graham, S. J. Perelman, Oscar Levant, Ogden Nash, Judy Garland, Abe Burrows, Hoagy Carmichael, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Pat O’Brien, Dick Powell and June Allyson, Dashiell Hammett, Lillian Hellman, James Cagney, and Dorothy Parker.

I had read the book and bought this copy for a friend who loves movies. It is a great story along with a background to the business of making movies. If I didn't think it was excellent I would not have bought for by friend, who is a real lover of movies.

Nutley NJ's most famous writer
By A. Buccino
In ''The Real Nick and Nora - Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, Writers of Stage and Screen Classics,'' author and Frances' nephew David L. Goodrich puts together a comprehensive and delightful portrait of his aunt and her husband and writing partner Albert Hackett.

The first play Frances and Albert worked on was something she had struggled on for a while and brought him in to finish off. A few years later, that play, ''Up Pops The Devil,'' was the first play produced by the Nutley Little Theatre on Nov. 23, 1934.

"The Real Nick and Nora" is filled with references to Nutley, N.J., and Frances' Nutley Avenue home. One photo in the front of the book shows ''Frances, in her teens, in the Nutley house - as usual, with a book.''

Born in Belleville, the Goodrich family moved to Nutley when she was two years old. She attended private school while she lived in town, then went Passaic Collegiate School, and then on to Vasser.

After graduating in 1912, Frances went into the theatre. While working in the theater in Northampton, Mass., Frances met actor William Powell - who later turned up in the Thin Man films.

Well, a lot happens to Frances between college graduation and writing screenplays in Hollywood for the Thin Man films, and many others.

Author David Goodrich takes his time developing the cross-relations and early kindnesses that led to life-long friendships with, among others, James Cagney. (Albert Hackett gave the young actor a ride in Hollywood - rather than leave him to wait for a bus.)

Frances met Bob Ames and married him in the Nutley Avenue house in 1917. That lasted six years. She married again, and though the wedding made the social pages, it didn't last.

It was with Albert Hackett, an actor and writer, that Frances life clicked for the best. The pair wrote plays, got married, and went to the new world of Hollywood to write the words for actors to say in the 'Talkies'.

The Hacketts wrote screenplays and plays for the next 30 years. They are best known for their work on the three Thin Man films staring Myrna Loy and William Powell.

The Hacketts, as Goodrich calls them, were the epitome of Nick and Nora. Frances had the refined taste for the good life and had grown up in Nutley with attending servants. Albert was the wise-cracking uncle every one would hang around at parties.

While writing the screenplays in their Hollywood studio office, passersby would hear the pair screaming and yelling at each other. Then the Hacketts would break for lunch and be as civil and chatty to each other as possible while away from their keyboard.

At the 'writers' table' at MGM and in Hollywood's Golden Age, they forged friendships with Ogden Nash, Dashiell Hammett, Dorothy Parker, F. Scott Fitzgerald and many others.

Later, when the Hacketts were well known, they were instrumental in establishing the Screen Writers Guild - to ensure fair treatment of writers in Hollywood. They stood up to the bigwigs, including Louis B. Mayer.

And the pair worked on Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" but it wasn't a pleasant experience for even the seasoned Hollywood screenwriters.

The Hacketts' crowning achievement, and most-draining writing effort, was their work as playwrights on "The Diary of Anne Frank." For that work they won the Pulitzer Prize.

Frances, who never had any children, thought of Anne as hers. Albert predicted rightly, that whenever Frances was called upon to speak about the play, it would cause her to cry.

The exhaustive 300-plus pages of ''The Real Nick and Nora'' covers a pair of long, full lives, Frances died at 94, and Albert, ten years her junior, lived to be 95.

The Hacketts were such nice people, they often seemed out of place in the wilds of Hollywood in the 30s and 40s. Their kindness was often taken advantage of, but they were such nice people, who wouldn't want to be their friend?

The Hacketts certainly deserve the fine treatment in this comprehensive biography. They would be proud of the fine job their nephew did.

Unspoken: A Rhetoric of Silence, by Cheryl Glenn

In our talkative Western culture, speech is synonymous with authority and influence while silence is frequently misheard as passive agreement when it often signifies much more. In her groundbreaking exploration of silence as a significant rhetorical art, Cheryl Glenn articulates the ways in which tactical silence can be as expressive and strategic an instrument of human communication as speech itself.

Drawing from linguistics, phenomenology, feminist studies, anthropology, ethnic studies, and literary analysis, Unspoken: A Rhetoric of Silence theorizes both a cartography and grammar of silence. By mapping the range of spaces silence inhabits, Glenn offers a new interpretation of its complex variations and uses.

Glenn contextualizes the rhetoric of silence by focusing on selected contemporary examples. Listening to silence and voice as gendered positions, she analyzes the highly politicized silences and words of a procession of figures she refers to as “all the President’s women,” including Anita Hill, Lani Guiner, Gennifer Flowers, and Chelsea Clinton. She also turns an investigative ear to the cultural taciturnity attributed to various Native American groups—Navajo, Apache, Hopi, and Pueblo—and its true meaning. Through these examples, Glenn reinforces the rhetorical contributions of the unspoken, codifying silence as a rhetorical device with the potential to deploy, defer, and defeat power.

Unspoken concludes by suggesting opportunities for further research into silence and silencing, including music, religion, deaf communities, cross-cultural communication, and the circulation of silence as a creative resource within the college classroom and for college writers.

Review
“Cheryl Glenn has written a thoughtful and engaging volume focusing on silence as a rhetoric. Presenting new material in an original manner that spans academic settings, contemporary Washington politics, and the silences among Native Americans, Unspoken offers a major contribution to the fields of rhetoric and communication.”—George Kalamaras,Reclaiming the Tacit Dimension: Symbolic Form in the Rhetoric of Silence

About the Author

Cheryl Glenn is an associate professor of English at The Pennsylvania State University and coeditor (with Shirley Wilson Logan) of the Studies in Rhetorics and Feminisms series from Southern Illinois University Press. Her past publications include Rhetoric Retold: Regendering the Tradition from Antiquity Through the Renaissance, Making Sense: A New Rhetorical Reader, and (with Margaret Lyday and Wendy Sharer) Rhetorical Education in America.

Interesting and New Ideas
By A. Garner
The back of the book calls Glenn's work "groundbreaking," and in the field of silence, it certainly is. Although more and more scholars writing about silence now, it is an "undertheorized" area so this is really one of the first explorations of the topic in book form. Glenn offers a formulation of silence as a method of exerting power in a way similar to speech that is very generative, especially for rhetorical or literary scholars, although I imagine social justice and feminist scholars would find it useful as well as she spends a full chapter on "Real Indians" (silent Native Americans) and considerable time on women figures like Anita Hill, Lani Guinier and all of Bill Clinton's "women." These last come across at times as slightly sensational but stick with it - you will be rewarded with a very interesting take on the power of silence. A couple of things to know:

1) Silence is broadly defined here as "not speaking" - Glenn, unlike some critics, does not consider gesture to be silence, or at least she doesn't talk about it in this book.

2) Glenn's style of writing is easy to follow. She does not rely heavily on "theory" although she does mention some theorists in the beginning.

3) Most of Glenn's work here consists of case studies which make for a convincing argument.

4) It's a quick but thoroughly engaging read.

Overall, I'd recommend this book highly. I don't think this is the last word on silence, or even as comprehensive as I would like it to be, but it's an excellent opening exploration.

"Silence- not the spoken word- is the only phenomenon that is always at our disposal" p.5
By Carrie Arnold
I found this book to be thought-provoking and inspirational. I appreciated Glenn’s ability to profile the positive features of silence and talk about the dangers of being silenced (muted). In our technically constipated world, where language is shared as small bites and language has been replaced by emoticons, we need to better understand the phenomenon of silence as rhetoric. Are we simply not talking or have we lost voice? I find these distinctions critical and appreciate the breadth of research she cited in her book. A must read for anyone interested in linguistics and theories of silence.

The best gift for new parents you'll find...
By Amazon Customer
We received this as a gift from friends when we had our first child, and could not stop laughing as we gained a new appreciation for what it meant to be parents. Whether you're new parents, know someone who is, or have been parents for years and want to remember what it was *really* like, this book needs to be on your list.
We've now given this book as a gift to four other couples who've had babies recently, and all agree that it's their favorite new book on the shelf. It covers everything - changing the first diaper, the first visits from the parents (both sets), sleepless nights, and the joy of teething, to mention a few.
Buy this book. You'll laugh for a long time, and will probably end up sharing it with your other friends fortunate enough to have kids of their own.

True to Life!
By C. H. Poorman
I have been a fan of Baby Blues since my daughter was born, eight years ago. I sometimes think that Mr. Kirkman and Mr. Scott hide outside my windows and take notes, because so many of their strips are right on the mark! If you have small children, are thinking about having small children, or just want a good belly laugh, I highly recommend the entire series of Baby Blues collections. Enjoy!

This Book is a Treasure...Grab It and Run!
By Amazon Customer
This book is a treasure. It's a look at the methodology of cartooning with thorough details on the how and why a cartoon contains certain elements and the reason(s) why they are arranged in a certain way. You go through the actual thought process of a cartoonist making up an image. This includes any changes, rejects, tangents and abstracts which crop up along the way. It's like sitting right across from a live person who is telling you what they're thinking as they draw. Great insisghts, helpful tips and wonderful visual examples make this a must for any would-be cartoonist's collection.
