Wonderful Reference Book For Practicing Bodybuilder

As someone who has actually been tossing around the iron for longer than I personally like to admit (try 1960 on for size), I have always found this particular book to be a wonderful reference book for the practicing bodybuilder, one he or she can employ to solve persistent problems, answer a technical question, or browse in search of alternative exercises working a particular muscle group from a specific angle. For example, the fact that each exercise emphasizes not only how to correctly perform the exercise, but also stresses which aspects of the muscles are most stressed, hence which are likely to most benefit from regular use of the exercise in a complex routine.
There are many aspects of the book which could use to be revised to improve it, such as its reference to newer machines and new technology in general is a bit lacking, and it also is a bit dated in that it trades heavily on Weider's long association with famous bodybuilders of the classic period of the 1960s and 1970s. For old horses like me, that is neat, but it may not play well to some of the younger enthusiasts. Yet the fundamental facts found in the book are still quite credible, and the fact that it is a paperback issue you can actually drag along to the gym with you is to its credit. I recommend it for the reasons I mentioned, although I would also suggest you purchase a copy of Arnold's own version of a how-to manual, as well as Bill Pearl's superb "Keys To The Kingdom". The more recent Iron Man version is also an excellent resource, especially for the intermediate bodybuilder ready to spread his wings and intensify his workout. Enjoy!

Just Get The Book!

As an ACE-Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Specialist, I have to give this book a high recommendation. The beginner will get a good introduction to physique development. The more experienced will get ideas for adding variety to their programs. The photos are a bit misleading for the beginner - you'll never look like that unless you use drugs. However, all the technical information is good, and I like the presentation. This book is a real bargain!

Bodybuilding Knowledge galore!

I personally thought this book was a real winner. I have read this book many times cover to cover, yes this takes a while. I use it for reference all the time. It spells out exactly what and how to do all exercises. It also contains great photography of the stars in action. This also contains much information, many pages, great pictures, and pure content for the price. The only other book that is comparable is Arnold's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding.

Irwin Edman wrote at that time that “with monumental care, detail and completeness, Professor Dewey has in this volume revealed the metaphysical heart that beats its unvarying alert tempo through all his writings, whatever their explicit themes.” In his introduction to this volume, Sidney Hook points out that “Dewey’s Experience and Nature is both the most suggestive and most difficult of his writings.”

The meticulously edited text published here as the first volume in the series The Later Works of John Dewey, 1925–1953 spans that entire period in Dewey’s thought by including two important and previously unpublished documents from the book’s history: Dewey’s unfinished new introduction written between 1947 and 1949, edited by the late Joseph Ratner, and Dewey’s unedited final draft of that introduction written the year before his death. In the intervening years Dewey realized the impossibility of making his use of the word “experience” understood. He wrote in his 1951 draft for a new introduction: “Were I to write (or rewrite) Experience and Nature today I would entitle the book Culture and Nature and the treatment of specific subject-matters would be correspondingly modified. I would abandon the term ‘experience’ because of my growing realization that the historical obstacles which prevented understanding of my use of ‘experience’ are, for all practical purposes, insurmountable. I would substitute the term ‘culture’ because with its meanings as now firmly established it can fully and freely carry my philosophy of experience.”

This book should be read by anyone in an exiting approach to philosophical questions. Although written between the world wars, it is as relevant to todsay's problems as it was then. The style is somewhat awkward.

From the first announcement of the Estates General, Mirabeau was known to be a radical who was a monarchist, and a monarchist who was a democrat.

Amidst the tumult of revolutionary France, he would not be forgiven for advancing reason before partisan passion. Mirabeau knew his circumstances were precarious. In a letter to his collaborator Mauvillon he remarked, "I have been criticized by everyone because I do not echo the fanaticism for the parlements. In fact I have not written anything for the other side either; I have always believed that between the King and the parlements there is a poor, obscure little party called the nation, to which sensible, honest men should belong."

Upon his death, public ambivalence toward him was temporarily suspended. On April 4, 1792, his remains were carried to the unfinished church of Sainte-Geneviève to lie beside Descartes in the crypt of the old church until the new edifice was completed. The cortege that accompanied his body wound three miles through the streets of Paris.

But there was to be no rest for Mirabeau even in death. On September 21, 1794, his remains were removed from the vaults of the Pantheon in official disgrace and deposited in an ordinary burial ground. When in July 1797 the Council of Five Hundred moved to restore Mirabeau’s coffin to the Pantheon, no trace of his remains could be found.

Learned a great deal from reading this biography. Too bad he didn't live long enough to really affect change in France. The Tennis Court Oath I believe was all Mirabeau. Perhaps I should re-read the biography to refresh my memory.

Quite a mouthful!!!!

This is considered by many to be Cicero's magnum-opus of his career. Whether it is or not is a topic of debate. What is outside the jurisdiction of debate is that it is a landmark work in the history of oratory.
In it Cicero details the various oratorical techniques which should be employed by the master of elocution. Such topics as eloquence, delivery, word choice and accessability of diction are discussed. Each view and counterview is presented by a different interlocutor, in the Platonic tradition. We even have none other than Julius Caesar lecturing on what Nietzsche would call the "uses and disadvantages" of invoking humor during serious orations. One of the primary issues which comes under consideration is the level of erudition of the orator. Should the individual be well versed in sundry fields of intellectual endeavor (such as the philosopher, perhaps?)? Does the ability to invoke virtually any academic pursuit aid in getting one's point across? Or, does this only lead to a person with an overly and unnecessary pedantic approach to oratory - one which stocklists various irrelevant points to the topic at hand? If so, is it better for the speechmaker to be less well rounded in his studies, and instead focused solely on the subject matter of his parlance? Cicero takes the question up at great lengths.
Within the dialogue myriad allusions are made to such household names as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Pericles, Isocrates, Democritus, Hesiod, Demosthenes, Cato the elder, Anaxagoras, Valerius and Scipio Africanus, as well as a multitude of less well known names which would be recognized only by the most learned classical scholars. A general knowledge of Greaco-Roman history up until the time of Cicero is highly recommended before engaging this text.
The second part of the book is entitled "Brutus; or Remarks on Eminent Orators." This is supposedly taken from a conversation which Cicero actually had with Brutus and a few other mutual friends, in Cicero's own words "in a private lawn, near a statue of Plato" (p. 268). In it Cicero extols the great Roman orators of the past and (as in "Orators") extends his criticism against the sophists. He also pays homage to his own teacher: Molo of Rhodes. One comes away with nothing less than an awe of Cicero's vast knowledge of the history of elocution.
This book is a must read for philosophers, scholars of antiquity, lawyers, politicians and all others who own the task of swaying the opinion(s) of the masses. Oh, and by the way, it's a pretty good read for those who aren't interested in any of that stuff, too. 8-)

learning from the wisdom of the ancient thinkers

Cicero provides us all with an opportunity to discover what matters when stepping up to the podium in academic or public debate. Throughout this carefully translated book lies the wisdom of the ancients which all of us in public and private life ought to consider... "the means by which the minds of men excited or calmed" (On the character of the Orator:47) or how to use the power of metaphor so that..."but bring some accession of splendour" (on the character of the Orator:237). For anyone studying law politics or discourse this is the book for you.

Latin or English?

What a load of waffle. The most interesting aspect of this is how it demonstrates that the famous Romans were in no better shape understanding themselves or what makes oration good than anyone. Know your audience, and know what you are talking about. Speak eloquently but not so much so that you are overly fine, nor be guttural and plain. Be funny though to the point. Practice, practice, practice. And talk about clichés! This book is loaded with more clichés about oration than Shakespeare's stuff. (This is supposed to be a joke for those that don't get it.) But take Antonius for example, he iterates exactly this point himself in this book while describing what he gets out of reading Greek. I like the metaphor of walking in the sun and reading the books, while doing both for pleasure, none the less they improve his tan and his diction. Which brings up an interesting point. Why am I not reading this in Latin? "Cogitanti mihi saepe numero et memoria vetera repetentiperbeati fuisse, Quinte frater, illi videri solent, qui in optima republica, cum et honoribus et rerum gestarum gloria florerent,eum vitae cursum tenere potuerunt, ut vel in negotio sinepericulo vel in otio cum dignitate esse possent; ac fuit cummihi quoque initium requiescendi atque animum ad utriusquenostrum praeclara studia referendi fore iustum et prope abomnibus concessum arbitrarer, si infinitus forensium rerumlabor et ambitionis occupatio decursu honorum, etiam aetatisflexu constitisset." If I want to improve my diction, do I want to do that in Latin or English?

John Dewey (1859–1952) was an American philosopher, psychologist and educational reformer whose ideas have been influential in education and social reform. Dewey was an important early developer of the philosophy of pragmatism and one of the founders of functional psychology. He was a major representative of progressive education and liberalism. In 1894 Dewey joined the newly founded University of Chicago (1894–1904) where he developed his belief in an empirically based theory of knowledge, becoming associated with the newly emerging Pragmatic philosophy. His time at the University of Chicago resulted in four essays collectively entitled Thought and its Subject-Matter, which was published with collected works from his colleagues at Chicago under the collective title Studies in Logical Theory (1903). During that time Dewey also initiated the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where he was able to actualize the pedagogical beliefs that provided material for his first major work on education, The School and Social Progress (1899). In 1899, Dewey was elected president of the American Psychological Association. From 1904 until his retirement in 1930 he was professor of philosophy at both Columbia University and Columbia University's Teachers College. In 1905 he became president of the American Philosophical Association. He was a longtime member of the American Federation of Teachers.

First published in 1948, Kaskaskia under the French Regime is a social and economic history of French Kaskaskia from 1703 to 1765. Using a readable, journalistic style, Belting brings to life the prairie terrain, the Kaskaskia mission, early architecture, building methods and materials, the beginnings of government, domestic tools and utensils, commerce, and the social customs of the pioneer.

In 1703, Kaskaskia was little more than a mission station in Illinois territory inhabited by a few French traders, their Indian wives, and a priest. Later in the century, the settlement became a flourishing French village filled with rows of low one-story French-style houses lining the streets. But the unique native and French bonds began when the explorers Louis Joliet and Pierre Marquette discovered a peaceful tribe, the Kaskaskia, while journeying along the Illinois River.

This historic friendship grew into a unique colonial culture, the remnants which can be seen through numerous primary source documents. Belting draws on and translates from eighteenth century French the Kaskaskia Manuscripts, in which French notaries recorded parish marriage contracts, property transactions (including slave sales), and estate inventories. She also examines the papers of the Marquis de Vaudreuil, among them the most complete census ever conducted in French Illinois, which provides a household-by-household enumeration of the population. What results is a comprehensive depiction of the lives and livelihood of French settlers in colonial Illinois.

About the Author

Natalia Maree Belting earned her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1940 and taught history there from 1941 to 1985. She wrote more than twenty works for children, including Pierre of Kaskaskia and In Enemy Hands, as well as the weekly column “Illinois Past” for the Champaign News-Gazette and other central Illinois newspapers.

Carl J. Ekberg is an Illinois State University professor emeritus of history and the author of French Roots in the Illinois Country and François Vallé and His World: Upper Louisiana Before Lewis and Clark.

I purchased this book after I discovered that one of my ancestors was a major player in the French and Indian War. I use this as a reference whenever I go back on my family history research and I find it easier to match up timelines with the book.

A little obscure corner of history comes to life

I bought this book because I'm interested in my family history and three generations of my ancestors lived in Kaskaskia during the 1700's. It's a scholarly book that's directed at the professional historian, but it has lots of trivia to offer to anyone interested in early Illinois history.

Because it was originally written for a scholarly periodical ("Illinois Studies in the Social Sciences"), the writing is dry. But it does communicate clearly to the reader what life in the frontier town of Kaskaskia was like before the French lost their North American holdings east of the Mississippi.

There are some shortcomings in the book. Although the author pours over a census in the appendix, she never gives us a population estimate of the town at any time in its history. There is also a startling lack of continuity in the history because she just presents events that happen one after another, without linking the people involved in each event to other persons or happenings in the area. At the end of the book you'll have very little idea of who the promiment people in Kaskaskia were or the names of people who did the most to shape the life of the town.

But a handy book if you're family spent a few decades there. Chances are their name will show up at least once.

BEST resource EVER for Kaskaskia!

Carl Ekberg's foreward finally recognizes the value of some advise he received to: "First of all seek counsel from Natalia Belting". IMHO, no one else has come close to providing the social and economic history of colonial Illinois that is presented by Ms. Belting. And, she gives us the essence of her INVALUABLE SOURCE MATERIALS. As a long time genealogy re/searcher, I am most grateful. Now, after finding her quoted for years on the web, and using her book as my "source", I can thank Shawnee Classics for making it available again! I am finding even more family connections than i had recognized in my previous research efforts.

Beth Conway Shervey examines the cultural consequences of an Equity theatre in a small midwestern farm town. Although many in the Midwest and beyond know the story of The Little Theatre On The Square in Sullivan, Illinois, Shervey is the first to consider what the existence of such a theatre means to perceptions of life in the town. To tell the story of Sullivan and of its star theatre in a cornfield from the perspective of the residents involved, Shervey uses oral history and and dozens of photographs by David W. Mobley, the theatre’s longtime photographer.

Sullivan resembles most small towns in the Midwest, and The Little Theatre differs little from most professional summer stock theatres. Yet taken together, the small town and its theatre are clearly unusual, and the existence of the theatre obviously alters perceptions of life in the small town.

Before the theatre opened in 1957, Sullivan decidedly was a product of its time: the town sported a strong local chapter of the WCTU, moral people avoided taverns, liberals and Catholics were the minorities, and the population was predominantly white. While the theatre didn't effect instant change, it did introduce people to Sullivan who were obviously different.

Stars such as Betty Grable, Cesar Romero, Margaret Hamilton, and Pat O'Brien came into town. Aspiring actors and those behind the scenes also mingled with the residents of Sullivan. As a result, Shervey finds, Sullivan faced such issues as racism, homophobia, urban liberalism, and alcohol consumption at a much faster rate than similar towns. For some, the theatre disrupted a sense of the normal; for others, the theatre made life in Sullivan different and interesting, breaking the restrictive bonds typically associated with small towns.

We pity the dog, for he is the only one without a mask. But then we remember that—without a mask—he is our canary in the coal mine." Futilely, Werman seeks patterns to the attacks, attempting to predict when they might occur. He writes of the nation’s response to war: joggers running with their gas masks in hand, schools temporarily disbanded while children meet in small groups to continue their education, city streets emptied by six o'clock each evening as people wait in their homes for the sound of the sirens that herald an assault. He discusses the varying opinions concerning retaliation against Iraq, the fluctuating morale of the country, the damage produced by Iraqi missiles, and the widespread speculation of Israeli citizens concerning their country’s survival. Yet Werman’s daily reports, digressions, and explanations not only include his observations and impressions; they also poignantly reveal his own personal story and political, religious, and philosophical views.

Werman’s journal gives a singular view of a country under siege, recounting in detail the pressures, conflicts, and dangers existing during a war. It is a distinctive book, a fascinating personal and political account of a man, his family, their nation, and a war.

During the six-week Gulf war in 1991, Werman, an American-born Israeli physician, lived through the threat and the reality of Scud attacks, and sent daily reports to electronic pen pals over a computer network that extended as far as the U.S. and Japan. He records what it was like to huddle in a poison gas-proof room in his house in Jerusalem, struggling with fear and anger as Iraqi missiles fell on Israel. Between alerts Werman and his family attempted to live normally, observing the Sabbath, entertaining friends, following the news. (Aside from Saddam Hussein, the figure that turns up most frequently in the diary is CNN reporter Peter Arnett, whom Werman regarded as a tool of the Iraqi government and an Israeli-basher.) Werman experienced the last three Scud attacks in a cardiac intensive-care ward: "So I was to finish the war as a patient," he writes in the epilogue, "struck down not by a missile but by a traitor, my heart." His book is a vivid personal account.

About the Author

Robert Werman, trained as a physician and clinical neurologist, immigrated to Israel from the United States in 1967. He has taught at Columbia, Cambridge, and Indiana universities and is now professor of neurophysiology at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the author of two books of poetry.

One citizen's view of scud millile attacks on Israel

This was an Israeli's view of being attacked by missiles and some of the ways in which it affected an individual's behavior from day to day. This occurred during the first Gulf War, when Saddam Hussein of Iraq tried to win arab support by firing scud missiles at Israel., to counterbalance the negative views he received for invading Kuwait. The author was a physician born and trained in the United States who emigrated to Israel and became an Israeli citizen.
