I owned an original copy of this that was handed down to me by my mother; I passed it on to my adult daughter but only after I found this copy to keep for myself!

This is my favorite poetry book

This is my favorite poetry book. I have had a copy since I was 16 years old, and now I am 77! I purchased this one for my granddaughter who loves the poems in it. We have several memorized. Our favorite is "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes. We can both recite it. This book is filled with so many great poems.

Inspirational poetry of another time

The edition of this book I have was published in 1929. It is an old-fashioned collection of inspirational verse. Many poems are by poets no one knows today. But the volume contains many familiar great works and excerpts which are still of great value today. Longfellow's 'Psalm of Life' Henley's 'Invictus' Kilmer's 'Trees' MacRae's 'Flanders Fields' Keats 'Ode on a Grecian Urn'. It has a few prose pieces at the end including the 'Gettysburg Address' 'The Ten Commandments' 'The Magna Charta' 'The Declaration of Independence'.
How different this Anthology is from the great majority of anthologies which have been published in the past half- century. For these anthologies do not by and large concern themselves with moral or inspirational matters, but rather focus on linguistic and aesthetic elements alone.
Here the aim is to reach the soul of , and improve the life of the readers.

Interesting but flawed

Not a stand-alone book but a commentary on Little's documentary on Lee's unfinished movie "The Game of Death", Little fails to make the book say anything more substantive than the movie. While the movie is an excellent look into how Lee had hoped "Game" would be an allegory about martial arts, the constricting nature of "styles" and by default, philosophies, religions and ways of living that fail to allow people to adapt and grow in each new situation, the book at best repeats the same points as the movie and at worst gives Little the space to wade into JKD politics, over-stretch himself when delving into Lee's philosophy, and contradict himself repeatedly over the meaning behind Lee's unfinished work. When the author strays too far away from what Lee intended into what Little would like him to have meant, the book loses value, and he sometimes comes close to losing the point of the book itself by his insistence on sharing what Jon Little thinks, rather than what Bruce Lee thought.
Little has done the MA community a service with his documentary, while this book is a flawed addendum to that work.

"Bruce Lee - A Warrior's Journey" is a great compliment book to the DVD presentaion by the same name by author John Little.

This is the final and sadly incomplete contributions and work on the film entitled: The Game of Death (1972-73) by the late Bruce Lee who died at the young age of 32 in July of 1973.

This is a book that tries to fill in the many gaps of what might have been the late Bruce Lee's greatest martial arts action film. Lee had intended the film to be an expression of his personal philosophy and principles of combat which he called Jeet Kune Do. He was planning to educate the public on his personal insights, principles and philosohy of martial arts while entertaining them at the same time.

This book presents Bruce Lee's long lost original script and director notes for his incomplete film entitled: The Game of Death (1972-73) combined with with long lost final film footage of the master in action (seen on DVD of same title) in the sequence and manner that the late Bruce Lee had intended for the film.

Although the film footage is sadly incomplete and lacks the quality that Bruce Lee's films had a reputation for it is our final look at a man that truly shook the world with his insight, philosopy and amazing on-screen presence.

I highly recommend this book as a compliment to the DVD by the same name.

In the first few decades of the twentieth century, the motion picture industry was controlled by an elite handful of powerful firms that allowed very little room for new competition outside of their established cartel. The few independents that garnered some measure of success despite their outsider status usually did so by specializing in underserved or ignored niche markets. Here, Ward chronicles how the Roach Studios, at the mercy of exclusive distribution practices, managed to repeatedly redefine itself in order to survive for nearly a half-century in a cutthroat environment.

Hal Roach’s tactic was to nurture talent rather than exhaust it, and his star players spent the prime of their careers shooting productions on his lot. Even during periods of decline or misdirection, the Roach Studios turned out genuinely original material, such as the screwball classic Topper (1937), the brutally frank Of Mice and Men (1940), and the silent experiment One Million B.C. (1940). Ward’s exploration yields insight into the production and marketing strategies of an organization on the periphery of the theatrical film industry and calls attention to the interconnected nature of the studio system during the classic era. The volume also looks to the early days of television when the prolific Roach Studios embraced the new medium to become, for a time, the premier telefilm producer.

A Very Interesting History

I debated for quite some time on whether I wanted to read what I feared would be boring background information on the inner-workings of a studio from the distant past. However, I finally decided to purchase this book, since I am a big fan of the studio's product, principally Laurel & Hardy, Our Gang, and early Harold Lloyd. Anyway, I was very pleasantly surprised. This book is a very interesting read, the author having done a remarkable job of fleshing out the story of Hal Roach Studios. If you have even a passing interest in the artists who worked at Hal Roach Studios, or are interested in the story of a tireless, risk-taking entrepreneur (i.e., Hal Roach), then I highly recommend this book. My only complaint is that I wish there had been a few more pictures. But those the author chose to include are quite interesting. My thanks to the author for writing this excellent book.

The business side of laughter

During the 1910s, Hal Roach started a little comedy studio. By the late 1920s, he had eclipsed rival Mack Sennett both artistically and financially. His studio built Harold Lloyd and Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy into major comedy stars. And lots of lesser comedians like Snub Pollard, Charley Chase, Our Gang, Will Rogers, and Thelma Todd made funny films there too.

While a comprehensive artistic history of the studio has yet to be written, Mr. Ward's book goes into great detail on the inner workings of the business side of movie making. From the beginning of the studio, Roach had problems with Pathe booking his films into theaters. Pathe complained that the Roach films were not funny, and did not always pay Roach enough to make a good profit. After Roach signed a distribution agreement with M-G-M, things were much rosier, especially because Laurel & Hardy became such big stars.

Roach even secretly made a Laurel & Hardy feature film, and many more followed. Roach also made a few dramatic films too, like OF MICE AND MEN and ONE MILLION BC. Roach's studio survived into the 1950s, being run by Hal Roach, Jr. and making television programs. However, after World War II the studio's glory days were behind them.

If you are a fan of Harold Lloyd, Laurel & Hardy, Charley Chase, or Our Gang, this book is a must read. While critical assesments of films are only in a small appendix, this book will tell you everything else about the struggles that the Roach personnel had making great comedies. Although Roach certainly was successful, you will be surprised with all of the failed comedy series that he tried. And you will discover that Roach was a much better producer than director. His later directoral films were not very good.

Mr. Ward's book is extensively researched and end-noted. It belongs on the bookshelf of any silent comedy or sound comedy fan.

Really quite interesting

You won't find cute, anecdotal memories from interviews with an aging Hal Roach--so if that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere.

What you will find is a very interesting look into the early years of independent studio movie production--from the business end instead of the creative end.

This book is very well researched and allows the reader to take a peek back in time. It's honest about what Hal Roach was good at, and what he wasn't.

There are some details about the old stars (Laurel and Hardy, Harold Lloyd, Our Gang, etc.) but nothing particularly intimate. Which in my opinion is a good thing. Those kinds of details belong in biographies.

This book was a great read for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Max Weinberg Rocks!

I bought this book after seeing Max live in 1986 with the legendary Dirty Bones Band, a New England cult rock and roll band that used to play all the time at my university. He talked about his favorite drummers, then demonstrated their styles with the band. Even though I don't play (I am not a musician) I really enjoyed reading about some of Rock's great drummers including Ringo and Levon Helm. Buy the book

I really like this book and the drummer I gave it to says it's really great too! It has a lot of tips in it as well. I especially like Charlie Watts and was happy to see his interview in it!

Big Beat Big Fun

This book was recommended to me by one of the interviewees', John the Bee. This is also the book were Purdie lays claim to playing drums on all the early Beatles records. Every story is Gold as they say in the business. Now that it's reissued you don't need to pay $400 for an original copy. I have an original copy but it's a treasure so don't offer me $400. Great Book Fun Read.

Throughly enjoyable, Enjoyably thorough

The Sound Of Music was the first film I ever saw in a movie theatre (I was four) and it remains one of my all-time favorite movies. This book is everything I could want in a "behind the scenes" look at a classic film. Besides the remembrances of all of the cast members - major and minor, the book is jammed with many beautiful location photos, a number of which come from Portia Nelson's (she played one of the nuns) personal collection. What I found most fascinating was the list of famous young actors who screen-tested for the various children's parts (Mia Farrow as Liesl?!) as well as the director Robert Wise's battles with the studio to get his artistic vision on screen (20th Century Fox wasn't too financially solvent at the time thanks to Liz Taylor's Cleopatra debacle - of course the astounding success of The Sound Of Music changed that). In conclusion, if you love the film, you'll love the book. Get it today!

Entertaining and Ineteresting

I was 17 the first time I saw SOM in 1965 and I still get a thrill everytime the camera pans to Maria and she starts singing. Having seen the movie countless times I was excited to get this book! I thought at first that knowing about how the film was made would take away some of the magic. However this has not been the case. Informative ( would you believe Gene Kelly turned down being the director!) and the names of some of the actors who were considered for parts will really surprise you. If you are a die hard SOM fan then the price of this book is well worth every penny. Not a fan? Buy it anyway, a good read on how a film is made and how success can be measured not only by the money a movie can make, but by the hearts it touches as well!

Wonderful Tribute To One Of The Most Loved Movies Of All Time

It's taken me a long time to track down this beautifully put together homage to one of my very favourite movies of all time. And what a total joy this book proves to be for anyone like myself who remains entranced by this magical film an amazing 40 years after its initial release. This superbly put together book by Julia Antopol Hirsch is most definately a labour of love and is filled with really everything you would want to know about this most special of movie musicals. Boasting a touching forward by none other than now deceased director Robert Wise the book takes us on a informative journey through the history of "The Sound of Music", from its formation as a hugely successful Broadway show right up to the planning, production, and release of the motion picture, then up to recent times where it examines the film's enduring popularity with audiences both young and old years after it's first release. The volumne has some wonderfully candid photos of the production during rehearsals at Twentieth Century Fox studios in Hollywood, to behind the scenes moments when cast and crew are relaxing between takes and even soaking up the local sights of beautiful Salzburg, Austria on those rare days when they had days off filming. The book also includes beautiful colour and black and white photos, a rare shooting schedule, cast and crew profiles, interviews with stars including Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, and a highly interesting look at the original premiere of "The Sound of Music" in 1965. In it's 226 pages it even also finds time to give an outline complete with photos of the real Von trapp family members with a special focus of course on the immortal real life Maria Von Trapp.

This book has quickly become a treasured part of my personal library and for any lover of "The Sound of Music", it is a indispensible companion for everything you would want to know about the whole history of this immortal musical. The book makes a perfect companion to the brand new 40th Anniversary DVD edition of "The Sound of Music" released late last year which is a treasure trove of all things "Music", and it has certainly informed even a "The Sound of Music" buff like myself of many things I did not know about the film prior to reading it. I highly recommend Julia Antopol Hirsch's warm, informative and at times even amusing tribute to Hollywood's most loved musical. Reading through its pages the book has succeeded in actually increasing my affection for star Julie Andrews and the film in general, no small task considering my lifelong love of this special film. Enjoy!

interesting bio about the great boxing trainer, but not enuf "shop talk"

As I am planning to purchase and read recently departed boxing trainer Angelo Dundee's My View from the Corner: A Life in Boxing, thought I'd first peruse his earlier autobiography, ANGELO DUNDEE: I ONLY TALK WINNING (1985), which turned out to be a pretty good read.

Specifically, it was an interesting AUTOBIOGRAPHY - by that, I mean that the former Angelo Mirenda/Mirena/Mireno (the family name evolved over the years from Mirenda to Mireno becuz Dundee's father was illiterate and gov't officials had trouble deciphering their name as written on documents; the professional name Dundee was first adopted by eldest brother Joe, when engaged in some pro bouts, in honor of the great Italian featherweight Johnny Dundee, who was born Giuseppe Carrora - both brother Chris, who brought Angelo into the boxing business, and Angelo would assume the Dundee name professionally) focuses as much - if not more - on his "private" life as on his career as a boxing trainer, cornerman, and manager, regaling the reader with, among other things, tales of his childhood in South Philly, his life in the armed forces during WW II, and his courtship of and marriage with wife Helen (some details of which were so revealing that they prob garnered him a couple of whacks from his wife after publication!). If one is a big fan of Angelo Dundee rather than of his fighters or just someone who enjoys reading enteratining bios, this is a good book.

However, for those of us who are big boxing fans, Dundee's memoir leaves one wanting. For one thing, there are some unaccountable factual errors in this book. For ex, the trainer states that Jersey Joe Walcott was world heavyweight champ in the summer of 1949, when the champ was actually Ezzard Charles (Walcott wd take the title from "The Cincinnati Razor" in 1951). For another, his recollections of famous fights in which he was involved aren't always accurate. For ex, he perpetuates the fiction that he was able to delay the start of the fifth round of Muhammad Ali's first bout with Henry Cooper by "minutes" when he tore open a split he found in the then Cassius Clay's glove (as anyone who has seen the film of that bout can attest, the interval after the fourth round was, at most, just seven seconds longer than the regulation one minute). And, for a third, he does not really go into the tactics and techniques that he taught his fighters or those that were crucial in winning certain memorable fights.

And, while Dundee does wax a bit on what he learned from the great trainers with whom he rubbed shoulders while working with Chris in New York and divulges some of the "tricks" of his trade, it just isn't enuf (btw, to learn more about those tricks, I recommend reading Ronald K Fried's Corner Men: The Great Boxing Trainers or Dave Anderson's In the Corner: Great Boxing Trainers Talk About Their Art). He also doesn't tell us a whole lot about Chris or any of his well-known fighters, such as Ken Overlin, probably becuz Dundee simply did not really know his 15 year older brother all that well (Chris moved out of the family home at 15 and Dundee only recalled seeing him "two or three times" before joining him in NYC after the war), becuz Chris had dealings with the "Mob" during an era when its tentacles were all over the fight game, and becuz, as Dundee makes clear, it took him quite a while to get out from under his famous older brother's shadow, so he probably wanted to keep the book's focus on himself and the fighters whom he handled alone. Too bad.

Nonetheless, I ONLY TALK WINNING is filled with interesting anecdotes - incl a story that seems to have been lifted right out of the movie Porky's - and with the famed cornerman's opinions about training techniques, boxer psychology, and particular fighters, more than enuf to entertain and satisfy the curiosity of any casual boxing fan. Now, I just hope that he had more to say about boxing in his latest autobio. Enjoy

Charles Kostelnick, a professor and chair of the Department of English at Iowa State University, is a coauthor, with David D. Roberts, of Designing Visual Language: Strategies for Professional Communicators.  

 

Michael Hassett is Director of Implementation at Envision Technology Solutions in Midvale, Utah. He has taught at Brigham Young University and is the author of numerous articles on rhetoric and the teaching of writing.

Shaping Information has good content; however, the layout of the book detracts from readability. The leading and font size are off. Also, the figures are shown pages after their in-text callouts, so the reader must flip back and forth between figures and text.

Gwendolyn Audrey Foster, Willa Cather Endowed Professor of English in the Department of English at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, is the author of numerous books in film and literature. This was an awesome book. A dense read for such a little book, but full of very interesting bits. That's why it kind of takes longer than you'd think to read it. There is very little published about class-passing. If you're interested in class, you must read this book.

Clearly Written and Illustrated

This volume is one of several (about 10)that will make up a complete Flora of Illinois. Many volumes are available now, and a few wait to be published. The complete flora will include something nearing 3000 entries for individual species of this surprisingly diverse area of the county, with distribution maps specific to IL. Its entries are very readable, while including much information for characteristics and distribution, in addition to many line drawings that make it valuable for ID too.

It's not just about black and white, it's always about black, white & green.

My (white) grandparents' families had lived in East St. Louis since at least the end of the Civil War, and I heard stories from my grandmother about the riots and her experience seeing Negroes hanging from the light poles. This is probably the first book about the 1917 race riots and it was my first effort to learn more than her stories. Since then I have bought this book several times because it's worth sharing and my friends always fail to return my copies. Since then I've moved on to the Harper Barnes book and am now ordering Lumpkins' American Pogrom which puts the riots in a different setting. But this will always be the place I start in trying to understand St. Louis' dysfunctional racial relationships.
