Governor Henry Horner, Chicago Politics, and the Great Depression examines the governor’s management of the political and economic challenges of the state when millions of Americans were jobless, homeless, and hungry. The severely divergent economic and political positions of the state’s northern industrial and southern agrarian interests made the period even darker. Masters shows how Horner stemmed foreclosures, dealt with bank closings, placated unpaid teachers, soothed massive labor unrest, fed the hungry, and confronted the ever-present threat of revolution. While Hitler’s Germany was spreading Nazism throughout Europe, some Americans were questioning the fundamental order of their own political system, suggesting that socialism, communism, or Nazism could offer a better way. Masters addresses how Horner, Illinois’ first Jewish governor, dealt with these challenges to the U.S. political system.

The story of Henry Horner, Illinois governor from 1933 until he died in 1940, is one of many contradictions. Horner, who was born into a family of successful Jewish businessmen, managed to straddle the divide between the respectable good-government crowd and the rough and tumble ward politics of Chicago during the Capone years. At various times, Horner found himself an ally of Chicago's powerful Democratic machine and the object of its wrath. And, while remaining a staunch Democrat, Horner nevertheless found himself at loggerheads with the Roosevelt administration during the Depression.



The portrait of Horner that emerges in Charles Masters' account is that of a deeply principled man, committed to a practical, common-sense politics organized "not in terms of abstract policy, but in terms of people and material conditions." The book's first half provides the reader with a good overview of Chicago politics from the city's founding until the 1930s. But the book begins to really shine with its account of Horner's 1932 campaign for governor and his ensuing eight years as the state's chief executive.



Masters' well-written and entertaining popular history captures a unique perspective on the Depression, looking at President Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal from the perspective of Illinois and Chicago politics. In doing so, he has recovered a frequently forgotten strand of opposition to the New Deal, fiscally conservative but nevertheless deeply sympathetic to the plight of the poor and to limited government intervention on their behalf.

Masters is also the author of Glidermen of Neptune: The American D-Day Glider Attack, which was a featured selection in both the Military Book Club and the Aviators’ Guild Book Club. Interesting Read

What a great book. My wife knows how much I love Chicago history and she picked this book up for me over the holidays. I don't get a chance to read much, and am very selective about what I spend my time reading. I had purchased two books on my own since I had a weekend off, A Michio Kaku Physics book (this guy is a genius) and a the biography of Augustus Caesar. I felt bad not reading the book my wife bough me so I thought I would give it a try.

The book was truly riveting. It is hard to describe what an amazing (but definitely overlooked) figure Horner is in Chicago history. I literally did not put the book down for 16 hours. If you like Chicago history, or history at all for that matter, pick up this book. This is the first review I have ever felt compelled to write. I don't have time to read, let alone write reviews, but this book provides an insight you won't find in any class, or on any bookshelf if you aren't looking for it. I cannot tell you the last time I enjoyed a book so much.

It is my sincere hope this author takes on another history book, and I really hope it is a Chicago history book. I can't remember when I read something this well written and enjoyed it so much.

A dedicated collector, his extensive Lincoln collection is now among the treasures of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. This is a welcome and revealing account of a complex man. His story is a true hidden gem of Illinois history.

You'll have a good laugh every time you open the book!

This book contains photos and other reproductions of media items that will give you a good laugh every time you open to one of its pages. Everything is from real-life and that makes it even funnier. After reading this book and keeping it handy to let my friends enjoy it too, I found myself looking around familiar surroundings in my life with a keener eye and spotting the same type of funny stuff that made the book hilarious . . . like a photo ad in the Sunday paper for fitness and exercise equipment, and smack dab in the middle is a photo of a lady seated in a massage chair. Hey, that's MY kind of exercise! You'll love the National Lampoon True Facts book and you'll love your new awareness of the humor in the all-too-complicated world around us. Suitable for adults.

The Greatest Laughs of My Life!

This book gave meaning to my previously boring, miserable life. As a geeky high school student, I found that noboby could appreciate my sense of humor. I bought "True Facts: The Big Book" the Summer after my graduation from high school. I loved the book so much that I HAD to take it to college with me. Now I am the big man on campus, thanks to this book. I have friends knocking on the door asking if they can borrow it. It's hard not to laugh at other's verbal mistakes, such as a "SOTP" sign or a sign that reads: "Caution, pedestrians slippery when wet." My hearty thanks to John Bendel for the endless laughs!

The funniest book I have ever read

I first came across this book on vacation in Florida in the summer of '97.I had just read a few pages and I was laughing uproarisly,people in the store were looking at me.I had to buy it.Now,three years later,I still split my sides laughing whenever I read this book.It's in the same vien as Jay Leno's 'Headlines', it deals with real life,unintentionally funny stuff.This book is surely proof that the truth is funnier than fiction.Anyone with a sense of humour should buy,and love,this book.

Not worth the read is you have at least a minimal understanding of soccer!!

This book is extremely elementary to say the least. If you have any inclination about soccer or have ever played the game you are well ahead of this book. I forced myself to read it cover to cover hoping to find a small nugget or two to take away and was very disappointed. The diagrams are too simple and stick figures are used to represent players. My 9 year old son could put something better together than this. My suggestion is to save your money!

A decent book for beginners and intermediates

This is an okay book for beginner and intermediate level youth soccer coaching. There are two
main problems with this book. One is that the illustrations are extremely crude, often reduced to
literally stick figures. The other problem is that, having collected several other youth soccer
coaching books and videos, I'm not sure that I actually learned anything new from this book, and
so in retrospect, I don't think I would have gotten this book. For beginner coaches learning how
to coach very young kids (i.e., ages 4-8), Karl Dewazien's "FUNdamental Soccer" is a better
book in terms of the illustrations, and in its emphasis on how to handle these very young
children. For a more detailed explanation of tactics and intermediate to advanced skills for older
children (ages 8+), Alan Hargreaves' book "Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer" treats
essentially the same topics in a much more thorough fashion. For teaching soccer dribbling
"moves", Wiel Coerver's "SCORE!" is the ultimate book (although, as I noted in my review of
that book, the companion videos, viewed in slow motion, are more useful). However, if you
haven't gotten any soccer coaching books yet, and are looking for your first ever youth soccer
coaching book for slightly older kids (ages 8+), this book might be useful. It does have a
cookbook set of week-by-week soccer drills that will get you through your first soccer season, if
you don't want to have to think too hard about what it is that you're going to have to do.

Great beginner youth coaches book

I purchased about 5 books on coaching soccer, particularly youth soccer (13 and under). This was by far the best of the lot, most covered only rules and strategy and not teaching basic skills. This is the first coaches book I found that actually explained how to kick a ball! It does a great job in explaining how to teach the basic skills, which is what most of the young players need. The drills were helpful and made a definite improvement in the play of the team.

Advertised as “absolutely fireproof,” the Iroquois was Chicago’s most modern playhouse when it opened in the fall of 1903. With the approval of the city’s building department, theater developers Harry J. Powers and William J. Davis opened the theater prematurely to take full advantage of the holiday crowds, ignoring flagrant safety violations in the process. During the matinee on this particular Wednesday, all 1,724 seats were filled and an additional two hundred people were standing.

 

Midway through the second act, a spark from a defective light ignited a drop curtain and the blaze spread quickly to the scenery. Roof vents designed to handle smoke and heat were sealed off, and the fire curtain snagged before it could shield the audience from danger. A blast of gaseous fumes shot across the auditorium from an open stage door and asphyxiated hundreds of theatergoers almost instantly. Others were trampled or burned to death in the panic that ensued as they struggled to escape through locked exits, succeeding only in piling body upon body as the flames closed in.

 

For days afterward, Chicago mourned as relatives and friends searched hospitals for missing loved ones. The aftermath of the fire proved to be a study in the miscarriage of justice. Despite overwhelming evidence that the building was not complete, that fire safety laws were ignored, and that management had deliberately sealed off exits during the performance, no one was ever convicted or otherwise held accountable for the enormous loss of life.

About the Author
Veteran journalist Nat Brandt is the author of ten previous books, including The Man Who Tried to Burn New York and The Town That Started the Civil War. The former editor-in-chief of Publishers Weekly, Brandt was also an editor for The New York Times and managing editor of American Heritage. He is the cocreator of the PBS television series Crucible of the Millennium, for which he also served as head of research.

What's not to like?

The lies. The screams. The stacked dead children. The pay offs to violate regulations to increase profits. The owners getting away with murder. Welcome to America, people. When did this happen? Do You really need a date? Is that brand new Stedium you are sitting in all that safe?!!!

Remember the Victims of This Tragedy

Remember the victims of this tragedy the next time you're in a public building and see an outward-opening exit door marked by a lighted sign. It took a tragedy of this scope to make these fire codes require these simple but incredibly important safety measures. I have a copy of the 1924 National Electrical Code, and several of its provisions can be directly attributed to the Iroquois fire.

This book is largely a more-coherent retelling of the information that was published shortly after the tragedy in a now extremely-rare book titled Chicago's Awful Theatre Horror. A great deal of inaccurate/incomplete information about this incident has been published; for example one book I own states that people found fire escapes to be uncompleted once they finally made it through the exit doors. A photograph of the alley behind the theater shows all fire escapes complete all the way to the ground. Fire from open doors farther down is actually what made some fire escapes unusable.

The infuriating thing about this story is that those responsible for the tragedy went completely unpunished. The theater's architect in particular was especially unrepentant.

Contrasting with their reprehensible actions were those of bystanders, police officers, firemen, newspaper reporters, neighbors, doctors, nurses, and medical students who all responded the moment they heard of the disaster. Many of them must have suffered longterm psychological effects of their experiences, but such conditions weren't even recognized, let alone treated in the early 1900's.

Fire returns to Chicago

Chicago is certainly well known for the fire of 1871 but how many people have ever heard of the fire which swept through the Iroquois Theatre thirty-two years later, leaving six hundred people dead in its wake? I admit that I never had heard about it so with Nat Brandt's excellent new book, "Chicago Death Trap", the lives of those lost and the hundreds of families that the tragedy touched can now be told.
The author is direct and writes in a sparse, conservative tone that works well. Within the covers of this small book, Brandt, after some good preparation about the Iroquois Theatre itself and the men behind it, spells out the details of the fire....how it started, how it spread, how it affected the cast and stagehands, (the performers were giving a presentation of the comedy, "Mr. Bluebeard", starring Eddie Foy, Sr.) and finally how people in a sudden and severe panic tried to saved themselves. This is not an easy book to read but I give the author credit....it is also not an easy book to put down. Brandt gives human faces to those who escaped and those who did not. He tells of incredible rescues and how the city responded moments after the fire started and days and weeks after the finger of blame began to point in all directions. He describes makeshift morgues and those who came to identify loved ones...if they could at all. He recounts the ramifications faced by officials and the theatre owners after the tragedy. The horrors are so individualized...down to the items of clothing and personal items worn by those in the theatre that afternoon.
It is perhaps toward the very end of this book that Nat Brandt makes his most poignant point... that other than a cemetery monument and a City Hall bas-relief nothing else exists in commemoration of the Iroquois fire. The memory of the fire seems to have passed as quickly as the fire itself. Thanks to this book, we have a chance to learn about this horrible day in Chicago's history.

In the fall semester of 1772/73 at the Albertus University of Königsberg, Immanuel Kant, metaphysician and professor of logic and metaphysics, began lectures on anthropology, which he continued until 1776, shortly before his retirement from public life. (He does not yet distinguish between the academic discipline of anthropology as we understand it today and the philosophical.) Kant’s lectures stressed the "pragmatic" approach to the subject because he intended to establish pragmatic anthropology as a regular academic discipline. He differentiates the physiological knowledge of the human race—the investigation of "what Nature makes of man"—from the pragmatic—"what man as a free being makes of himself, what he can make of himself, and what he ought to make of himself." Kant believed that anthropology teaches the knowledge of humankind and makes us familiar with what is pragmatic, not speculative, in relation to humanity. He shows us as world citizens within the context of the cosmos.

Summarizing the cloth edition of the Anthropology, Library Journal concludes: "Kant’s allusions to such issues as sensation, imagination, judgment, (aesthetic) taste, emotion, passion, moral character, and the character of the human species in regard to the ideal of a cosmopolitan society make this work an important resource for English readers who seek to grasp the connections among Kant’s metaphysics of nature, metaphysics of morals, and political theory. Kant's Anthropology is what we call today - psychology. The book is a series of lectures that Kant himself edited into a book. Usualy we know Kant as hard to read, yet this book is unique in that. It flows, from subject to subject, examining man's mind and various characteristics of the human spirit. It is embodied with examples from life and literature, and gives a very good idea of Kants views regarding everyday life and behavior of normal people, and also of insane ones. It is a very warm book, filled with intelligent remarks about the human race, and it gives a very good notion of psychology (both cognitive and abnormal) in Kants days. I recommend it Highly.

Teaching/Writing in Thirdspaces: The Studio Approach examines a dynamic approach to teaching composition that reimagines not only the physical space in which writing and learning occurs but also the place occupied by composition in the power structure of universities and colleges. 

In response to financial and programmatic cutbacks at the University of South Carolina in the 1990s, authors Rhonda C. Grego and Nancy S. Thompson used their academic backgrounds in composition and English education, along with their personal histories in working-class families, to look at compositional spaces and places with an eye to challenging the embedded issues of race, class, and gender within the university hierarchies.  The result was a supplemental writing program that they called the writing studio.

The studio model emphasizes individual participation in a small group that allows students to present work they are preparing for outside classes, discuss their challenges, and refine their ideas with other students and staff facilitators.  This “interactional inquiry” is replicated and reinforced by the facilitators, who meet in their own small groups to analyze larger patterns, possibilities, and needs as they arise in their studios.

Grego and Thompson argue that because the studio is physically and institutionally “outside but alongside” both students’ other coursework and the hierarchy of the institution, it represents a “thirdspace,” a unique position in which to effect institutional change.  The focus on interactional inquiry challenges traditional power hierarchies within classrooms and shifts the nature of discourse. As a bottom-up approach to the development of educational programs within institutions that have different needs, demographies, and histories, the studio model can address a multitude of different institutional needs with little disruption to the curriculum.

The studio model allows university administrators, teachers, student aides, and students to continually adapt to changing institutional environments with new teaching and learning strategies.  Teaching/Writing in Thirdspaces provides an alternative approach to traditional basic writing courses that can be adopted in educational institutions of all types and at all levels.

About the Author
Rhonda C. Grego is currently a full-time instructor at Midlands Technical College in Columbia, SC where she teaches first-year composition courses.  Previously she held positions as Assistant Professor of English at the University of South Carolina, and tenured Associate Professor of English at Benedict College, also in Columbia, SC.  Conference presentations, journal and book articles, and grant-work have explored the ways that organizational history and geography affect the shape of writing instruction and attendant programs in higher education institutions, with an interest in the ways that rhetorical and feminist theories of memory and alternative research methodologies help articulate the influence of place and space on writing and Composition’s work with college student writers.  Ongoing research interests are in Composition and higher education history in South Carolina; and the slave narratives, folklore, and fiction of the historically-Black communities in and around Congaree National Park in Columbia, SC. Special Honors include:  AAUP Konheim Award; Benedict College Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year 2001-2002; TWIN Leadership Award, YWCA, Spring 2001.  
 
Nancy S. Thompson is a professor Emerita in the English Department at the University of South Carolina. Through several years of her career in English at USC, she was in charge of the course on the Teaching of Writing required of secondary teachers in training.  Another scholarly project that occupied her for several years was recuperation of the fictional and pedagogical writings of the prominent New Zealand educator, Sylvia Ashton-Warner, research that has also resulted in several publications.  After retiring from the USC English Department, Thompson worked with another colleague to write an NSF proposal that funded the Research Communications Studio in Engineering.   Each of these projects has resulted in publications, conference/workshop presentations, and consultations with other universities.  Most notable professional achievements out of many include Media Editor, English Journal, 1975 – 1980; and Chair, NCTE International Assembly, 1987, 1988, 1994.  Upon retirement, the USC Composition/Rhetoric Association's “Nancy Thompson Achievement Award For Enduring Enthusiasm and Service To The Field” was established.

Starts well and ends well

The prologue and epilogue are worth the whole book for insight into the studio method and why Thompson and Gregory developed it. In between is a study in the kind of professional jargon that swells the pages of composition journals.
