This first biography in English of Davout, the most successful of Napoleon’s com­manders, made Marshal of the Empire, places the man in historical perspective.

 

Louis N. d’Avout (later Davout) was born in 1770. He died in 1823, having lived a life encompassing the span of French history from the Revolution to the restoration of Louis XVIII. He was born into an old and distinguished military Burgundian family and served France as a soldier all his life.

 

Gallaher pays particular attention to Davout’s career as a Napoleonic com­mander and military administrator. Hence, the new point of view Gallaher brings to his work and his original research into the documents provide an historical perspec­tive on the complex Napoleonic wars and other military history of the period.

fantastic biography

Probably one of the best biographies written about one of Napoleon's Marshals, John G. Gallaher does a fantastic job bringing Louis N. Davout to life in a well written, superbly researched and very insightful biography. The author managed to intergated all facets of Davout's life into a single flow that provides clarity and understanding. The two previous reviews have spoken more then enough on this book so I won't go on. It was nice to read a great biography which did great justice on Napoleon's greatest corps commander (my humble opinion of course).

Excellent Military Biography

This book is the long awaited reprint of John Gallaher's 1976 classic account of one of Napoleon's greatest Marshals, Louis Davout, 'The Iron Marshal'. According to David Chandler, Davout was "one of the least liked as a man, the ablest as a commander, and the most feared - and respected - as an adversary. He was also, from 1798, one of the loyalist of Napoleon's key subordinates."
This is an excellent biography of a Napoleonic commander. The book covers Davout's military career from when he entered the Ecole royale militaire in 1779, through the Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars and finally his death in 1823. The narrative flowed along faultlessly although I would have liked more detail in regards to Davout's battles. However the author has covered these battles well enough and provided eight maps to assist the reader in following the action. Davout fought in numerous campaigns from Egypt to Russia and was successful always, his most famous battle being at Auerstadt.
Mr Gallaher has also supplied the reader with some insight into Davout the man with details of his relationship with his devoted wife and the tragedies of his children. You leave this book with a feeling that Davout was a man who did his all for duty (France and the Emperor) but never forgot his family. I loved reading this book and I felt it was not long enough (420 pages). I fretted about finishing, I wanted more, I did not want to put the book down nor finish it!
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about the napoleonic period or anybody who enjoys a decent military biography. This is a great book about a great commander.

Solid History

I can't add very much to the other reviews, but agree that this book is well-written history and deserves a five-star rating. While the author clearly admires Davout, he contributes clear and objective discussion on the various controversies in Davout's life (did he wish to be king of Poland, why he fell from favor after the disasterous Russian campaign, his conduct after Waterloo, etc.). My only quibble with this book is that it is a bit dry (but not overly so) and it would have been even better if the author had woven a bit more anecdotal material into the book.

Devitt also advocates a critical genre pedagogy based on these ideas and provides a rationale for first-year writing classes grounded in teaching antecedent genres.

 

This study’s research stems from the fields of rhetoric, composition, linguistics, communication studies, literary studies, and critical pedagogy, and works from rhetorical and social constructionist theory. Drawing from such theorists as Tzvetan Todorov, Mikhail Bakhtin, and M.A.K. Halliday, as well as the more recent efforts of Kathleen Hall Jamieson, David Russell, and Carolyn R. Miller, Devitt in turn blazes a trail for modern scholars by examining genres in their multiple contexts, exploring how genres develop, arguing that genres foster rather than restrict creativity, comparing literary and rhetorical genres, and advocating responsible teaching methods for future genre studies.

Information dense

Devitt completes a thorough and interesting discussion of genre theory. A great deal of information but some chapters are overwhelming with information.

Elementary, dull, and repetitive.

This is an ambitious, yet poorly written monograph. Devitt's overuse of the term "genre" bludgeons the reader, and her assertions of the manner in which genre dictates certain aspects of how we see the world and organize our experiences borders on the obvious. Anyone familiar with the way in which signs and signifying chains are linked together are already familiar with this concept. For those indoctrinated in a Lacanian framework, she waters down the manner in which the symbolic functions by replacing the Law of the Father in the symbolic with genre sets and other subdivisions of how genres are grouped and ordered. Her claim that genre is at the nexus of the individual and the social is perhaps the point I disagree with most. Her concept of the individual is purely hinged upon the social/ public individual as defined in that space; however, she neglects the private, internalize subjectivity which the subject uniquely experiences. While some might claim that blogs, social media pages, and other narratives will fit into genres and thus cover that internalize experience, she neglects the affective investment in language that is inseparable and impossible to convey to another subject. We can read traces of another and individually re-invest in those signs as we have read and assimilated them. While some may assert that that individualized experience escapes this realm of writing, neglecting the relationship between the subject and their relationship to language escapes the area between the thought and the expression. She never deals with first person, second person, or third person narratives, and how that affects the writer in its articulation. She never addresses the genre of stream of consciousness and what it aims to do or signifiy in relation to the subject's experience. We can read about experiences and compare them to our own, but we never can feel the experience of another outside of the language used. It's always a feigned unicity of discourse.

While those more indoctrinated in genre theory might find this text useful, I found (and several of my colleagues) that the writing was poor, dull, and at times, painfully overwritten and obvious. It reads not only like bad academia, but also as an attempt to bolster the significance of an idea that is rather elementary. Her lack of focus on classic rhetorical philosophy also hinders her ties to the manner in which discourse works, and also how truth and authenticity is situated. There is no mention of Cicero, Quintilian, or Artistotle. Her focus on the social identity of the subject within the realm of genre theory makes sense, but again, is elementary. She doesn't address where writing fails, and for me, that is where the most fascinating work of a subject's experience occurs. What happens when white-space in inscribed, as it is in Shakespeare? What of Joyce's gnomon and his "." at the end of the 17th chapter of Ulysses? Her focus (as well as her admission that many of her ideas never much further research) make this feel like an unfinished project with either easily proved theses, or with ideas conveniently left out because of their ability to unravel claims in her work.

Unless you are very much into genre theory, this may be for you. I am not a fan of, nor am I interested in genre theory (as this was my first taste of it). This book was not for me. If I had a wobbly table, and I needed a book to put under a leg to stabilize that table, I would not use this book, for I believe that it is useless in any and all applications.

The core of the book is a quite original argument that the figures of rhetoric were not mere mechanical devices, were not, as many believed, a "nuisance, a quite sterile appendage to rhetoric to which (unaccountably) teachers, pupils, and writers all over the world devoted much labor for over 2,000 years." A first-rate survey.

An execellent concise overview of the history of rhetoric. The bibliography alone is worth the price of admission. Vickers covers the theory and practice of rhetoric in English poetry, especially in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. He provides you with enough information about sources and materials to develop a first-hand understanding of related texts and commentary.

Interesting discussion of how classical figures of speech influenced English poetry

In this brief book, the author contends that figures of speech from classical rhetoric had a significant effect on English poetry from Chaucer to Wordsworth. To support this contention, the author presents a chain of reasoning that (1) discusses and summarizes the history of classical rhetoric; (2) discusses and analyzes how various concepts, principles, and practices of classical rhetoric formed the basis for composition, organization, style, genre, and imitation in classical literature; (3) discusses and illustrates the importance of classical rhetorical figures of speech in achieving emotional and psychological influence; (4) identifies various instances of classical writers citing and using literary examples to illustrate various aspects of classical rhetoric; (5) notes how English rhetoricians during the English Renaissance generally followed and applied the approach to figures of speech developed by classical rhetoricians; (6) identifies sixteen specific classical figures of speech used in English poetry; and (7) conducts a rhetorical analysis of poetry by Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, and George Herbert.

The author provides an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary texts relied upon to support his discussion and arguments. He also provides an annotated “Additional Bibliography” that gives a reader a very useful introduction to the large body of writings about classical rhetoric (including its critics) and modern rhetoric.

This book is not suitable for casual reading. Some knowledge of classical rhetoric and classical literature would be helpful to better follow and understand the author’s discussion, observations, and contentions. A reader does not need to have a technical knowledge of poetry to follow and understand the author’s discussion, observations, and contentions; but, such technical knowledge would be helpful.

I recommend this book for anyone with a serious interest in: (1) the history of classical rhetoric; or (2) how classical rhetoric has influenced literary forms, including poetry. Serious students of English poetry may find the author’s views provide an interesting and provocative perspective worth considering. Edith Wharton on Film explores these seeming contradictions and examines the relationships among Wharton’s writings, the popular culture in which she published them, and the subsequent film adaptations of her work (three from the 1930s and four from the 1990s). Author Parley Ann Boswell examines the texts in which Wharton referenced film and Hollywood culture and evaluates the extant films adapted from Wharton’s fiction.

The volume introduces Wharton’s use of cinema culture in her fiction through the 1917 novella Summer, written during the nation’s first wave of feminism, in which the heroine Charity Royall is moviegoer and new American woman, consumer and consumable. Boswell considers the source of this conformity and entrapment, especially for women. She discloses how Wharton struggled to write popular stories and then how she revealed her antipathy toward popular movie culture in two late novels. 

Boswell describes Wharton’s financial dependence on the American movie industry, which fueled her antagonism toward Hollywood culture, her well-documented disdain for popular culture, and her struggles to publish in women’s magazines.

This first full-length study that examines the film adaptations of Wharton’s fiction covers seven films adapted from Wharton’s works between 1930 and 2000 and the fifty-year gap in Wharton film adaptations. The study also analyzes Sophy Viner in The Reef as pre-Hollywood ingénue, characters in Twilight Sleep and The Children and the real Hollywood figures who might have inspired them, and The Sheik and racial stereotypes.

Boswell traces the complicated relationship of fiction and narrative film, the adaptations and cinematic metaphors of Wharton’s work in the 1990s, and Wharton’s persona as an outsider. Wharton’s fiction on film corresponds in striking ways to American noir cinema, says Boswell, because contemporary filmmakers recognize and celebrate the subversive qualities of Wharton’s work.

Edith Wharton on Film, which includes eleven illustrations, enhances Wharton’s stature as a major American author and provides persuasive evidence that her fiction should be read as American noir literature.

The BEST Deep-dish Pizza Book Ever Written

If you want to make incredible (and authentic) deep-dish pizza, this book shows you in thorough detail exactly how to do it.

The first half of the book is full of pictures describing the processes of making deep-dish pizza in enough detail that someone who has never cooked a pizza can produce an outstanding pizza on the first try. The second half of the book is recipes from the Chicago pizza restaurants. It's hard to imagine the first half being any more clear, and the second half doesn't bore you to death with stuff you will know cold once you've read the first half and used it to make a couple of pizzas.

It is the perfect balance of educational detail and long-term utility.

I've had this book since 1983, the year it was first published. When I bought it, I loved deep-dish pizza, but hadn't a clue how to make it. I've used it to make more than a hundred different deep-dish pizzas, with never a flop yet. I've just purchased my THIRD copy, because I've used the first two copies until they disintegrated. My most popular is the Spinach-stuffed pizza, although the Greek pizza (with Kalamata olives, anchovies, feta and spinach) is my personal favorite.

One thing you won't find is innovations since 1983, but if you hear about something new, it's a snap to include it. It is the difference between learning a recipe and learning the theory. Get this book, and you'll be able to make the kind of pizza you want.

[[I have been making "homemade pizza" for many years, however I was looking for something different. The Great Chicago Style cookbook" has many different ideas, something for everyone. Give it a try, I am sure you will be pleased!

Elmer Gertz recalls his long battle in what legal scholars regard as the second most important libel case in legal history: Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc.

Gertz’s ordeal began in Chicago during the violent peace demonstrations of 1968. A youth, Ronald Nelson, was killed by a Chicago policeman, Richard Nuccio. Gertz represented the Nelson family in civil suits against Nuccio and the Chicago police department. After Nuccio was convicted of murder, the John Birch Society published an article in its journal, American Opinion, claiming that Nuccio was framed by Communists. Gertz was targeted as a prime Communist instigator. After reading and studying the article, Gertz filed suit against Robert Welch, Inc., charging that it had defamed him by publishing highly harmful lies impugning his reputation and patriotism.

Gertz writes in detail of his landmark case, which involved two trials, two reviews in the court of appeals, and two battles in the Supreme Court. Although the case was finally decided in April 1981, when a U.S. district court jury awarded him $100,000 compensatory damages and $300,000 punitive damages, Gertz did not receive payment until May 1983, after Robert Welch, Inc., had filed two unsuccessful appeals.
