Some literary scholars view myth criticism as passé, an approach to literature that enjoyed a heyday in the l950s and 1960s before being replaced by approaches that are considered to be more theoretically sophisticated and satisfying, such as feminism, new historicism, and deconstruction. Moddelmog argues that there are many good reasons not to cast out myth criticism from the community of critical approaches. Most obvious among them is that myth has attracted many writers of this century—from James Joyce to Thomas Pynchon, Virginia Woolf to Flannery O’Connor, Thomas Mann to Alain Robbe-Grillet, William Faulkner to Alberto Moravia—and that to ignore myth is to dismiss an essential part of their work. Moddelmog suggests that by reconstruing the relationship between myth and literature, we will find that mythic approaches are frequently not only necessary but also highly stimulating, engaging readers in many varieties of questions, quests, and conclusions.

Thus in this study she provides a poetics for myth in twentieth-century fiction, arguing that the nature of myth is to inspire interpretation, that every myth carries with it an intertextual body of theories regarding its meaning and yet remains capable of evoking new meaning. When used in fiction, myth therefore functions like a language, with the reader attempting to negotiate meaning for the myth or its key actions, its mythemes, while at the same time responding to the interpretive cues of the text itself. Because of the complicated demands placed on readers by both the myth and the text, readers who pursue myth in fiction are not simple translators or reactors but rather are participants in a dialogue involving numerous texts, a dialogue that is finally interminable.

In support of the poetics she proposes, Moddelmog presents several chapters devoted to the study of twentieth-century fiction in which the Oedipus myth appears. Each chapter focuses on a specific interpretative issue that is related to the experience of reading myth in fiction but one that also examines a genre of fiction in which the Oedipus myth recurs. Chapter 3 (on the science fiction of H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, Philip José Farmer, Philip K. Dick, and Roger Zelazny) reveals not only how a single mytheme can evoke a complex reading process but also how each reading of a work containing a myth influences the next reading of a similar work. Chapter 4 (on antidetective works written by Alain Robbe-Grillet, Michel Butor, and Thomas Pynchon) addresses genre questions that the mytheme as structural unit calls forth. Chapter 5 (on psychological fiction written by Flannery O’Connor, Alberto Moravia, and Max Frisch) looks at the appropriation of the Oedipus myth by psychoanalysis and the consequences of that appropriation by those who are reading and writing after Freud.

Many libraries may already have Feller's autobiography, Now Pitching, Bob Feller (1990), but this book would still be a worthy addition. "Rapid Robert" has always had plenty of sharp-witted opinions. This volume is divided into short, easily digestible sections, and Feller writes tellingly of the stars of his generation. He really shines when talking about his father and how the old man, eager to showcase his son's baseball talent, built a "field of dreams" on their Iowa farm when Feller was still a teen. Recommended.

About the Author

Bob Feller was one of the most revered figures in baseball. He joined the Cleveland Indians in 1936, when he was sixteen years old. At the peak of his career, he enlisted in the Navy and went on to become a World War II hero, receiving six battle citations aboard the USS Alabama. After being discharged in 1945, he rejoined the Indians and played with them until 1956. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. His is one of the most sought-after autographs in baseball, from New York to California, from old-timers to today's generation.

Burton Rocks, a seasoned freelance sportswriter and graduate of Hofstra University School of Law, is the coauthor of A King's Legacy: The Clyde King Story (also from Contemporary Books).

This is the greatest book ever! I got mine on New Year's Eve and was addicted to it from the first page. It is the type of book that has everything that you want to know about him (Bob Feller) from growing up in Van Meter, Iwoa to WWII and what he learned in war . Everything like secrets to succes, pitching, life, it's even got humor in it! I met BOB FELLER at a baseball card show and he was pretty funny, friendly and very willing to talk about his incredible career. I recommend this book not only to Feller fans but baseball fans and those who just want a great book too. He tought me so much by reading his book, facts on him and alot of other player's too. This is the best book I ever read! Bob Feller is rated the greatest pitcher ever and if he didn't go in to serve his country during WWII, he could have won some 300+ games and struck out about 3,000+ batters! Thats what many people predicted he would have accomplished. He will surprize you and amaze you and you will never be bored again once you have the Bob Feller "Little Black Book" of Wisdom.

Feller still throwing heat

Bob Feller, one of the premier pitchers in the history of baseball, has never been one to sugarcoat his opinions. He is old-school: the good old days were the best. Today's players (and young people in general) don't appreciate how good they have it, or the sacrifices made by previous generations.
Such is the essence of his "Little Black Book of Baseball Wisdom," in which he opines on the trouble with today's kids (too much TV, not enough physical exertion, among other complaints). The wisdom does not come in the form of advice, but rather what he has learned as a baseball legend.
Feller also writes about several of his contemporaries. To read his comments, one would think him a Will Rogers in knickers; he never met a player during his career that he didn't think was a "great" guy.
"Little Black Book" IS refreshing, however, given the concentration on the current game, with its quest to entertain its fans with more than just the game on the field.

The best baseball book ever!!

This page-turning book acts as a great guide on how to throw curve balls, change-ups, knuckle balls, and even sinker balls. The wonderful, 1930's pitcher, Bob Feller also teaches you on how to just have fun and a good attitude. He's always talking on how he got from a hard farm-working boy that grew up in Van Meter, Iowa to an All-Star pitcher. The book starts off fast and easy enough to catch on. It's very exciting to read about his adventures on becoming a pro baseball player and all his amazing accomplishments as an All-Star pro. Overall I would suggest this book to kids and teens that are interested in baseball and it's pastime!

In the final weeks of the 1880 campaign, Ulysses S. Grant left Galena and headed east to stump for the Republican ticket.  At rallies in New England, upstate New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York City, sometimes several times a day, the reticent Grant warmed to his role.  Sounding a familiar postwar theme, he repeatedly condemned voter harassment in the South, asserting the right of “our fellow-citizens of African descent,... to go to the polls, even though they are in the minority, and put in their ballot without being burned out of their homes, and without being threatened or intimidated.”  James A. Garfield won a narrow victory over Major General Winfield S. Hancock and welcomed Grant's advice on matters ranging from cabinet choices to foreign policy.

            Rootless since their White House days, unsatisfied with backwater Galena, the Grants now decided to settle in New York City and took rooms at the Fifth Avenue Hotel.  In January, 1881, Grant accepted the presidency of the 1883 World's Fair Commission, charged with bringing an exposition to New York City.  Initial enthusiasm soon gave way to rancor, as factions split over where to place the fair.  Grant favored Central Park, but public sentiment intervened, and funding evaporated.  By March, Grant resigned.  A friend told a reporter, “Grant and I had a long talk over the matter across the way in his son's office, and we both arrived at the conclusion that the people of New-York don't want a World's Fair.”

            Grant's business interests reflected the international stage he now occupied.  Competing plans for an isthmian canal through Panama, Mexico, and Nicaragua jockeyed for support, and Grant had his favorite.  “The only feasible route for a canal across from the Atlantic to the Pacific is by the Nicaragua route.  I have been all over the routes myself, besides having examined all the reports made regarding each of them carefully, and that is my firm conviction.”  Grant published an article championing Nicaragua even as momentum swung behind Panama.  But Grant's attention was drawn more to railroads and to Mexico.  When his friend Matías Romero promoted a new line through Oaxaca, Grant jumped on board.  A speech to American capitalists in November, 1880, led a few months later to the incorporation of the Mexican Southern Railroad, with Grant as president.  By April, 1881, he was in Mexico City, where he told lawmakers: “I predict, with the building of these roads, a development of the country will take place such as has never been witnessed in any country before. . . . There is nothing, in my opinion, to stand in the way of Mexican progress and grandeur, and wealth, but the people themselves.”

            In June, Grant returned from Mexico with a new charter in hand.  But his mind was on Garfield and Secretary of State James G. Blaine, two men who had thwarted him at the Republican convention one year earlier.  Grant supported his Stalwart ally, Roscoe Conkling, in a power struggle with Garfield and Blaine.  From New Orleans to New York City, Grant spoke candidly.  “If you want to know what I think of the manner in which Mr. Conkling has been treated by the President and his colleagues in the Senate, I will tell you without any hesitation.  I think it is most outrageous.”  The feud ended after Garfield was shot on July 2.  When he died in September, Grant wept with the nation.

            Fitz John Porter had sought restoration to the army since his dismissal after the Second Battle of Bull Run.  Grant had previously rebuffed Porter but now reversed course.  “I believe I have heretofore done you an injustice, both in thought & speach.”  Taking up a case that divided former commanders now in Congress, Grant forcefully argued for Porter's vindication.

            Grant and wife Julia bought a home just off Fifth Avenue in New York City.  In the summer, he commuted from his seaside cottage at Long Branch, New Jersey, to his office on Wall Street, where he greeted a steady stream of admirers and influence-seekers.  A silent partner in the brokerage firm his son Ulysses, Jr., formed with Ferdinand Ward, Grant left finances in Ward's hands.  Surveys for the Mexican Southern proceeded.  Banquets and parties filled many evenings.  The Grants settled into Manhattan society.

BUY THIS! IT'S GREAT!

Three years ago I got serious about eating right and getting exercise. At the time, I knew little about the subject. I picked-up this book *only* because it looked like a good log for keeping track of gym work outs. It had other info about macronutriants, body fat %'s, meal size and frequency, etc. Again, I didn't read any of that material. I thought it was all going to pertain to only per se body builders. Shortly afterwards, I lost the book.

A few years later, I had read almost everything I could get my hands on about proper diet and exercise. I managed to parse through what were fad diets to the basic / real /essential info. During a recent move I found the lost Gold Gym's book. This time I read it. I was amazed. Everything I had learned over the years was contained in this book. Moreover, it stripped down to the essential elements and presented in a very quick and easy way to understand. I should have read it the first time. Most of the book is actually space to keep a food and exercise log. The format is great, and quite helpful.

(FYI: I actually logged on to Amazon to buy another copy of this book b/c I've used all the pages up in mine. When I saw it had such few reviews, I felt compelled to write one.)

Solid advice for unsurpassed RESULTS!

Using the information in this book, my husband and I were able to bring both of our persentage of body fat down to a really healthy, trim level. We are active, but had never been able to lose the "slightly soft" look. We figured, "If we work out and eat decently, why are we still chubby?" Cathy Sassin showed us how we were eating incorrectly (too infrequently, without balanced nutrients), and we both lost fat and gained muscle by following her advice. We also gained a lot of energy, and lost all of our hunger pangs, headaches, late-afternoon sleepiness, etc. Now when we eat or work out, we know that we are supporting our goals of lifelong fitness by getting the best results for our efforts. Changing habits takes work, but you'll be more than willing to do it when you can SEE the results immediately! This WORKS. If you're serious, buy the book and do it.

Poorly constructed forms

Journaling your food and exercise is very important if you are serious about your fitness, however, this book has the worst forms for doing this that I've seen. Unless you are a proficient at micro-sized handwriting, the pages will look like a mess in no time. The introduction information is ok, but not essential to the function of a journal. It was a good idea to make it spiral bound, but this can't save it from the poor form designs. You'd be better off buying a good pad of grid paper and making your own forms.

Mat-thias Alexander's Man's Supreme Inheritance; and, central to Dew-ey's creed, Philosophy and Democracy. His involvement in a study of the Polish-American community in Philadelphia--resulting in an article, two memoranda, and a lengthy report--is discussed in detail in the Introduction and in the Note on the Confidential Report ofConditions among the Poles in the United States.

Gwendolyn Audrey Foster's Women Filmmakers of the African and Asian Diaspora is a welcome contribution to the literatures of black and Third World cinemas -- which have tended to privilege the work of male directors--as well as to feminist scholarship, which has only recently begun incorporating the work of women of color. Gwendolyn Audrey Foster is Willa Cather Endowed Professor of English and FilmStudies at the University of Nebraska. She is author of numerous books in film studies and cultural studies.

Black women filmmakers not only deserve an audience, Gwendolyn Audrey Foster asserts, but it is also imperative that their voices be heard as they struggle against Hollywood's constructions of spectatorshhip, ownership, and the creative and distribution aspects of filmmaking. Foster provides a voice for these women in the first detailed examination of the works of six contemporary Black and Asain women filmmakers. In this illustrated work, she also includes a detailed introduction and a chapter entitiled "Other Voices," documenting the work of other Black and Asian Filmmakers.

Foster analyzes the key films of Zeinabu irene Davis, Ngosi Onwurah, Julie Dash, Pratibha Parmar, Trinh T. Minh-ha, and Mira Nair. She sees Davis as "one of the growing number of independent Black women filmmakers who are actively constructing 'an oppositional gaze,' a term bell hooks uses to describe films that look through/at African-American female experiences through a Black les. " her films "Seek to reclaim female subjectivity through (re)construction of time, the body, and an exploration of spacial configurations."

Like Davis, British filmmaker Onwarah deals with time and space, embracing "Heterogeneity and multiple sites of subjectivity." Challenging the limits of narrative and ethnographic cinema, she insists that the "body is the central landscape of an anti-imperialist cinematic discourse."

Dash, too, reconsiders time and space as she celebrates the Black body and African-American cultural diversity. Her Daughters of the Dust "challenges Hollyood's narrative techniques that typically ignore African-American history, particularly Black women's history.

Palmar, a Kenyan/Indian-born British Black filmmaker, is concerned with issues of representation, identity, cultural displacement, lesbianism, and racial identity. She demands that women no longer be invisible, silent ad supressed.

Vietnamese born Minh-ha revolutioized documentary filmmaking by displacing the "voyeuristic gaze of the ethnographic documentary filmmaker." Ethnographic filmmaking, she argues, does not "objectively represent the Third World subject."

Nair, a Black Indian woman filmmaker, concentrates of racial identity. A pioneer in both narrative and documentary films, her challenging, celebratory work includes the recent productions Mississippi Masala and The Perez Family.
