Author Jeff Rice returns to critical moments during the rebirth of composition studies when the discipline chose not to emphasize technology, cultural studies, and visual writing, which are now fundamental to composition studies. Rice redefines these moments in order to invent a new electronic practice.
The Rhetoric of Cool addresses the disciplinary claim that composition studies underwent a rebirth in 1963. At that time, three writers reviewed technology, cultural studies, and visual writing outside composition studies and independently used the word cool to describe each position. Starting from these three positions, Rice focuses on chora, appropriation, commutation, juxtaposition, nonlinearity, and imagery—rhetorical gestures conducive to new media work-- to construct the rhetoric of cool.
An innovative work that approaches computers and writing issues from historical, critical, theoretical, and practical perspectives, The Rhetoric of Cool challenges current understandings of writing and new media and proposes a rhetorical rather than an instrumental response for teaching writing in new media contexts.

Insightful and Provocative

I'm a huge advocate of "alternative" pedagogy and discourse.

Rice does a good job in providing some history of how we got to where we are in Composition, and what we missed out on in terms of strictly focusing on just the written text.

Concepts like "chora" and the "box logic" seem to be very interesting approaches to composition. (See Roland Barthes' "Lover's Discourse" for an example of a written work of Chora. I did mine digitally using and blending both text and image).

I think we're due for a change, or we at least need to catch up and expand our horizons in the composition field.

Refute Book Bias

Book Bias wisely said.... "I must say that I think it was a waste of there money."(their.. one must use words correctly in good sales letters)
"Basically the book is just to vague and non-specific." (_too_ vague, again, correct use of words is important). OK, it isn't fully fair to pick on poor grammar usually, but sometimes the invitation is blatant.
The format of letter plus wide column for explanation or comments on each paragraph is pretty informative.
At one point in "How to Write Sales Letters That Sell" 2003 edition, Dayton Bird suggests that you should be able to write some kind of summarising or crystalizing comment about each paragraph of a letter.
Sometimes this comment is a simple summary, sometimes is is a part of the psychological basis of your sales script.
This is a very good way to evaluate letters by others, and to self analyse your own letters.

Useful sales letter cookbook.

It's best to read the description of the book before you buy it. I have written hundreds of successful sales letters over the years and find this book to be quite useful. The author includes many different sales letters for different purposes. There is no book on the planet that will write your letter for you. Sorry! But, this book provides some excellent examples you can use for a start. Many of the letters are two pages in length, but, of course, the length of the letter depends on the purpose of the letter. This is a good addition to anybody's library of how-to business books. It's certainly not a bible, but then, it doesn't claim to be.

You Pay for What You Get
By A Customer
I ordered this book for my company (a sales company). I must say that I think it was a waste of there money. This book gives one letter per occasion. Now this may sound like a pretty good deal, but not when the letter is only 10 lines long.
Basically the book is just to vague and non-specific. It's a start, but if you want to finish your letter, I hope you have backup.

Discourse studies, Yarbrough argues, does not support the idea that languages, cultures, or conceptual schemes in general adequately describe linguistic competence. He asserts that a belief in languages and cultures "feeds a false dichotomy: either we share the same codes and conventions, achieving community but risking exclusivism, or we proliferate differences, achieving choice and freedom but risking fragmentation and incoherence." Discourse studies, he demonstrates, works around this dichotomy.

Drawing on philosopher Donald Davidson, Yarbrough establishes the idea that community can be a consequence of communication but is not a prerequisite for it. By disassociating our thinking from conceptual schemes, we can avoid the problems that come with believing in an abstract structure that predates any utterance.

Yarbrough also draws on Mikhail Bakhtin's dialogism to define how utterances operate in life and to show how utterances are involved with power and how power relates to understanding. His discussion of Michel Meyer's problematology treats the questions implied by a statement as the meaning of the statement.

Yarbrough introduces readers to a credible theoretical framework for focusing on discourse rather than on conceptual schemes that surround it and to the potential advantages of our using this approach in daily life.

A glimmer at the end of the tunnel

I was very disappointed to find no other reviews of this interesting book...get with it, this is worth reading, and worth discussing widely.
I came to Yarbrough's book because I'd been puzzling over how, supposedly, rational people could reach such different conclusions from the same data. Just saying, "well, you are not from my culture, so you will NEVER understand!" seemed to be an horribly unsatisfying communication failure. After reading Yarbrough, I have a much better understanding of the trap we have stumbled into, which hinges on believing that there are Cultures (whose foundational assumptions creates a false groundings, below which no further discussion can proceed) and that Language is some "thing" not a process that changes the world even as we are making our discussions.
I've read very lightly in postmodernism, and make no claim to understand it, however, I am heartened by the pathway he has found, which may show a way out; a way, simply, to leave the conundrums behind and start talking with each other to make a world that may better meet our needs. This pathway starts with the process of trying to understanding the conditions in our--at most(?) one shared world-- which prompts another's statements and then striving to be able to predict what they will say next, which is the first indication of understanding. If he is right, and if we are able to leave behind the poisonous beliefs that hold us captive, and if we are able take to heart this new way of writing and talking with each other, then there can be a very rich life after postmodernism, and after our obsession with culturalism and multiculturalism, too.

Interesting approach to rhetoric as dialogic

Not the greatest text I have read on rhetorical theory. Hard to get into from the introduction, which seems confused and somewhat apologetic, certainly an after thought, and not exactly "introductory." I better understood the intro after reading the first chapter, which was longish and cumbersom. I believe the first chapter was actually an article that Yarborough then used to push out a book-lenth study on discourse as a rhetorical method of discovery. This explains the feeling of separation from the intro and first chapter from the rest of the book, which really starts in the second chapter on page 60-something (if memory serves right). It does a lot of referential borrowing and reinterpreting of better known philosophers and rhetoricians (Fish, Baktin, etc.), but admittedly does not always use the original authorial bent of those theories.

Offers something to think about with the value of dialogic methodology in knowledge and information discovery, but not sure it succussefully convinced me of Yarborough's argument. It was enough to add to my repitoire of contemporary theories, although I will probably only refer back to it on rare occasion and will never use for teaching basic composition or rhetoric courses. This is definately not a book for the average undergrad or disciplinary neophyte; it relies too heavily on the reader's foreknowledge of existing theory/theorists and thus requires a lot of additional work for a new student. A lot of interesting commentary suggesting slightly new perspectives on the 'process,' but overall it not the best work in the subject I've read this year.

There are no published reviews of After Rhetoric, if that is a sign of anything, and the author has published several other works since this one. I would guess that this was a rushed publication on an unfinished theory that Yarborough has since clearified and focused. His articles can be much tighter than this book, so one must hope his newer publications have fully developed what he started here.

Donald Pizer presents the major critical discussions of American realism and naturalism from the beginnings of the movement in the 1870s to the present. He includes the most often cited discussions ranging from William Dean Howells, Henry James, and Frank Norris in the late nineteenth century to those by V. L. Parrington, Malcolm Cowley, and Lionel Trilling in the early twentieth century. To provide the full context for the effort to interpret the nature and significance of realism and naturalism during the periods when the movements were live issues on the critical scene, however, he also includes many uncollected essays. His selections since World War II reflect the major recent tendencies in academic criticism of the movements.

Through introductions to each of the three sections, Pizer provides background, delineating the underlying issues motivating attempts to attack, defend, or describe American realism and naturalism. In particular, Pizer attempts to reveal the close ties between criticism of the two movements and significant cultural concerns of the period in which the criticism appeared. Before each selection, Pizer provides a brief biographical note and establishes the cultural milieu in which the essay was originally published. He closes his anthology with a bibliography of twentieth-century academic criticism of American realism and naturalism.

The Great Lakes Storm of 1913

I've read two of Robert J. Hemming's books about Great Lakes storms and shipwrecks--this volume plus his "Gales of November: The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald." I prefer this book if for no other reason than it memorializes one of the most ferocious storms in Great Lakes history. The 1913 storm blew for four days in early November (11/07 - 11/12) and sank ships on Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron (the worst hit) and Erie. Twelve ships were sunk and anywhere from 250 to 300 sailors died (the records weren't as strictly kept back then).
November on the Great Lakes is always an anxious time for sailors (the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a November storm), but the 1913 storm was a once-in-a-lifetime freak. Three weather fronts collided over the Lakes, producing hurricane-force winds, rain, lightning, and finally record-breaking snowfalls. The storm broke steel freighters in two, weighted them down with tons of freezing spray, pounded them with killer waves, and rolled them into the troughs between gigantic seas. It was astonishing that any lake-bound boat survived.
Hemming relates the destructive power of the 'Big Blow' lake by lake, ship by ship, and even sailor by sailor if there happened to be survivors. Over Huron, where the northerly gales collided with the advancing low front from the Gulf of Mexico, the whole lake seemed to churn into the air and combine with the ice and snow of the storm. Eight ships went down on the second largest of the Great Lakes, and there were no survivors.
Hemming includes a lengthy epilogue on other Great Lakes November gales, including the 1940 Armistice Day Storm, the sinking of the Bradley in 1966, and the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975.
If you'd like to read more about the 'Big Blow' of 1913, I highly recommend Dwight Boyer's "True Tales of the Great Lakes" and William Ratigan's "Great Lakes Shipwrecks and Survivals."

Disaster on the Lakes

This book tells the story of the Great Lakes storm of Nov. 7-10, 1913, perhaps the worst ever on the Lakes. Scores of ships were sunk and 200-300 sailors were killed. A monument to the lost men is in Maitland Cemetary, near Goderich, Ontario. Hemming relates the story well and holds our interest. Anyone interested in Great Lakes shipping or storms should enjoy this book.

Most excellent book on describing mens personalities.

This book is excellent. It helped me realize the personality types of men and that they won't change ( unless they want to). After being in 2 relationships that were described in this book, I now know that you can change and find a decent man. You just have to look a little harder. It also has tips on how to deal with the man that is of the personality types listed. It is a must read book.

Very good and thought provoking analysis of abusive relationships. The author seems to have a good understanding of the fact that abuse does not require physical damage. Although he starts out with an offensive reference to the abuser who "may be hurting you big time (having and affair) or just a little (putting you down)...", later in the book he seems to get it that just "putting you down" can be the most insideous and damaging kind of abuse. I highly recommend the book for both men and women. Even though most of the references to the abuser are in the male gender, the author acknowledges that abusers ("nasty people") can be of either gender.

This Book Changed My Life

I was in an abusive love relationship for twelve years, that finally ended when my husband walked out on myself and my 6 month old baby (I had quit my job, and he decided I was no longer financially useful for him).
I really considered taking this person back when he found out he couldn't keep all our assets in the divorce, and then I read this book. This is him! You won't believe how well this book describes your nasty man. The book is very clear that THIS PERSON WON'T CHANGE. It was these words that gave me the courage not to take him back.
I highly reccomend this book - I can't say enough good things about it.

The forty items in this volume also include an analysis of Thomas Hobbe's philosophy; an affectionate commemorative tribute to Theodore Roosevelt, our Teddy; the syllabus for Dewey's lectures at the Imperial University in Tokyo, which were later revised and published as Reconstruction in Philosophy; an exchange with former disciple Randolph Bourne about F. Mat-thias Alexander's Man's Supreme Inheritance; and, central to Dew-ey's creed, Philosophy and Democracy. His involvement in a study of the Polish-American community in Philadelphia--resulting in an article, two memoranda, and a lengthy report--is discussed in detail in the Introduction and in the Note on the Confidential Report ofConditions among the Poles in the United States.

Board of Education decision, Catherine Prendergast draws on a combination of insights from legal studies and literacy studies to interrogate contemporary multicultural literacy initiatives, thus providing a sound historical basis that informs current debates over affirmative action, school vouchers, reparations, and high-stakes standardized testing.

As a result of Brown and subsequent crucial civil rights court cases, literacy and racial justice are firmly enmeshed in the American imagination—so much so that it is difficult to discuss one without referencing the other. Breaking with the accepted wisdom that the Brown decision was an unambiguous victory for the betterment of race relations, Literacy and Racial Justice: The Politics of Learning after Brown v. Board of Education finds that the ruling reinforced traditional conceptions of literacy as primarily white property to be controlled and disseminated by an empowered majority. Prendergast examines civil rights era Supreme Court rulings and immigration cases spanning a century of racial injustice to challenge the myth of assimilation through literacy. Advancing from Ways with Words, Shirley Brice Heath’s landmark study of desegregated communities, Prendergast argues that it is a shared understanding of literacy as white property which continues to impact problematic classroom dynamics and education practices.

To offer a positive model for reimagining literacy instruction that is truly in the service of racial justice, Prendergast presents a naturalistic study of an alternative public secondary school. Outlining new directions and priorities for inclusive literacy scholarship in America, Literacy and Racial Justice concludes that a literate citizen is one who can engage rather than overlook longstanding legacies of racial strife.

Catherine Prendergast is an associate professor of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her articles have appeared in Harvard Educational Review, Written Communication, CCC, and JAC; and she is the recipient of the 1999 CCCC Richard Braddock Award for her article, “Race: The Absent Presence in Composition Studies.”

A dynamite survey of race in education since Brown, both in theory and practice. A true page-turner, the book examines and revises all previously accepted notions of literacy. Evocative language and incisive thought.
