About the Author

Robert J. Hastings is a retired editor and Baptist minister. During his retirement he has concentrated on creative writing, short-term teaching in colleges and seminaries, storytelling, and a syndicated radio program.

Great Depression

A well-written personal experience from a young boy's perspective. He gives one family's coping methods during this trying period in southern Illinois. This vivid account of day-to-day life could only have come from someone who was there. A nice complement to "A Penny's Worth of Skim Milk" also by this author (I had the honor to have had the author in my home for supper many years ago whereupon he gave me an autographed copy). Well recommended to anyone interested in this traumatic period.

Another Great Read

Not quite as great as Hastings' first book "A Nickel's Worth of Skim Milk" but only because it's a slightly more narrow in it's focus and maybe because it wasn't a surprise at how much I enjoyed it! This book focuses on the "corner grocers" in his home town back in the 30's rather than an overview of life growing up during the Depression. But it's still extremely readable - Hastings can really tell a good story. It's a reminder of times long gone and helps us remembered whether we actually lived during those times or like me, had parents who did. I "just missed" the Depression but was raised with so many of the same values and leftover ideas that sometimes I feel as though I did . . . and for that I'm thankful. And thanks to Hastings for taking the time to write his memories down and for God for giving Mr Hastings the talent to make the words so entertaining. From nine to 90 . . . you'll like this book.

Only in the acquisitive 1980s could a business scam such as 22-year-old Minkow's succeed, asserts Domanick, who covered the story for Los Angeles magazine. The author's carefully researched, grudgingly admiring account is enlivened with vivid sketches of Minkow's fellow con men and those they deceived. Domanick adroitly disentangles the complex web spun by Minkow, the brazenly confident, persuasive Los Angeleno who founded a rug-cleaning and restoration company which he parlayed illegally into a multimillion-dollar business, drumming up loans and support from major Wall Street investment bankers and underwriters, accounting and legal firms and a public relations company--and wooing the media with his plush offices and glamorous personal aura. Minkow's caper ended when a Los Angeles Times story and subsequent revelations exposed him, leading to a trial where his lawyers' attempt to portray him as a mob "puppet" failed and he was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. Domanick, a writer for Los Angeles magazine, has researched and written an intriguing and readable account of Barry Minkow and the investment scam he ran with his carpet cleaning company, ZZZZ Best. The case received wide coverage in 1987 and 1988 in the Wall Street Journal and weekly business and news magazines and was featured on a segment of 60 Minutes . What makes this work even more interesting is the era in which this and many other fraud cases occurred. The way in which banks, accounting firms, and rich and poor individuals alike allowed themselves to be duped by this particular "get rich quick" scheme helps one understand the psychology of the times in which far too many of these scams occurred. Recommended for most business collections.

It is amazing that major banks, law firms, accountants, and professional investment houses were all fooled by the ZZZZ Best scam. The warning signs were there, but they seemed dazzled by the feel good story. Loved the book.

Still Faking It

Mr. Minkow was accruately presented in Joe Domnick's book as a slick salesman for an unlikely business: carpet cleaning. Minkow eventually lost millions of unsuspecting investor's money. Domanick exposes Minkow as perpratrating one of the worst fruads of the 1980s. A good book for people interested in how crooked CEOs steal our invested funds.

great financial advice

Great financial advice, especially the early parts of the book. Some later sections are applicable only in special situations. For example, not everyone will want to or has a need to set up a family foundation, but maybe joining a public foundation could be a meaningful way to engage in philanthropy with your children. Having clear money values is important (and by extension, general life values as well). Just something I never thought about much before.

Silver Spoon Kids, must read for mid to hi income parents

Eileen and Jon Gallo have done a wonderful job of communicating money issues and teaching values to children of all ages. The content of the book deals not only with the phychological matters surrounding the handling of money and how it affects children, but also parental responsibilites and guidelines than can be helpful in establishing your financial values in your children. This unique approach has combined a number of ideas ranging from the psychological cause and effect to possible ways to construct your trust or will. Although this is not a "how to" book, it does provide excellent food for thought to middle and upper income parents and can help eliminate many of the pitfalls that face parents today. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more from the Gallo's.

Encyclopedia Of Resistance Exercises

The Gold's Gym Encyclopedia Of Training is a collection of exercises and routines designed for the serious bodybuilder. Most of the exercise descriptions are matched with demonstrative photos to help the reader "see" how to perform the exercise correctly. There are times that the form depicted in the photos does not match what the text says but overall they do a good job of describing many of the basic weight training exercises.
There are a few forgivable physiological errors in here as well; given that this book was written in the mid-80s, we did not know as much then as we do now about muscle physiology and it comes through a few times in here. For one thing, the authors assert that intramuscular hypertrophic compartmentalization is a reality (basically they say that you can build up different parts of the same muscle by incorporating different movements). We now know this is false -- differences in muscle hypertrophy amongst various cross-sections is due to the influence and hypertrophy of surrounding muscle structures, not of different parts within the muscle itself. They also assert that training to failure is the most optimal way to train and that all the pros do so. That is again wrong; failure is not a requirement for progress and many of the pros trained close to failure but not always to it.
All in all, this is a nice reference guide for anyone looking to add some more exercises to their personal weight-training repertoire. If you are looking for some different exercises to change up your routine with, this book is worth a shot.

A Great Learning Guide for Weight Training

I have owned this book ever since it was first published. Periodically I give it to people asking for guidance on weight training. It is nicely comprehensive on the various exercises, giving the proper form and names of equipment, movements and such. The photos are 80's vintage and dated but the info is not. Training with free weights has not changed. The exercises that worked twenty years ago work just as well today.

A Good Bodybuilding Training Manual with Lots of Exercises

This book has a nice collection of exercises, with photographs and detailed description on the proper execution techniques for each one of them. The detailed description on each exercise include: The muscles emphasized by the exercise, its starting position, movement performance, exercise variations and training tips.

One valuable aspect of this training book is that at the end of each chapter you will find a lot of routines from Professional bodybuilders and champs. Each muscle is treated with great detail in its own individual book chapter.

Since the Table of Contents is not included in the book information presented above by the seller, I am including how the book is organized, so everybody can visualize what topics are covered:

- Basic information.
- Biceps training.
- Chest training.
- Shoulder training.
- Back training.
- Thigh and hip training.
- Triceps training.
- Abdominal training.
- Calf, forearm, and neck training.

In summary, very useful manual, with lots of exercises and routines, and plenty of information on training techniques and principles as they apply to bodybuilding.

About the Author

F. A. Hayek (1899–1992), recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991 and co-winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1974, was a pioneer in monetary theory and a leading proponent of classical liberalism in the twentieth century. He taught at the University of London, the University of Chicago, and the University of Freiburg.

Hayek's best and quintessential work

Hayek was one of the most important economists and social philosophers of the 20th century. This book contains his most important papers (the first five papers of the book, where he starts to build a new social and economic theory), with were perhaps the most important economic articles of the 20th century (yes, I am serious about this claim).

Even today, most economists are under equipped to deal with the problems that these papers grabbed and even solved about seven decades ago. Many of the fundamental problems of modern macroeconomics come from a lack of understanding of what Hayek already knew in the 40's, that macroeconomic problems are the result of intertemporal discoordination of production plans with consumption plans. While his paper on the meaning of competition makes the modern take on the theory of competition and industrial organization naive and immature by comparison: Most modern authors simply doesn't understand what economic competition is. Hayek shows what competition is all about and integrates the economics of information with it. As with industrial organization, the modern approach on information, mechanism design and games with imperfect information is inferior and unsatisfactory if compared to Hayek's treatment of these same problems, with he does in this book in a few dozen pages.

Hayek goes straight to the point and reveals to the reader what are the real problems of economics and what economics is supposed to do: Explain why individuals, acting in their 'little worlds' (their problem sets, or means/ends frameworks), produce social orders beyond their conscious design. That task was already set by Adam Smith in a crude form more than 200 years ago, Hayek sets the problem in its definitive form. The market is a process of competition between individuals that produces tendencies to integrate the knowledge discovered by millions of minds into a consistent set of action plans, this integration is brought by the price system and it is competition the process that produces the knowledge that the prices transmit.

If you wish to know about why Hayek is the most important classical liberal social scientist in the 20th century (well, I would say: THE most important social scientist), you must read this. If you want to know what's really behind the modern libertarian positions, you must be familiar with these papers. If you want to know what Austrian economics really is about, you must read this book. Absolutely obligatory for anybody who wishes to understand the world in with he or she lives.

Individualism and Economic Order contains several classic essays. Chapter two (Economics and Knowledge) examines decentralized economic planning by individuals. Plan coordination among individuals requires each to form plans that contain relevant data from the plans of others. We each acquire this data through competition in markets. Every time someone adjusts their plans, others must also change their plans. So, initial plan coordination requires each to fully anticipate the actions of others. Since this is impossible, order will emerge as a result of successive trials by individuals in markets. The price system enables individuals to adjust their plans with each other through time. This is the foundation of Hayek's theories of spontaneous order and social evolution. Hayek was far ahead of his peers in examining expectations formation.
Chapter four (The Use of Knowledge in Society) is another classic. Hayek contends that the economic problem is really one how to make use of fragmented and widely dispersed data. As he indicated in chapter two, full knowledge of economic conditions reduces the economic problem to one of pure logic. Markets increase our ability to take advantage of division of labor and capital formation by extending the span of our utilization of resources beyond the span of any individual mind. The price system in markets does this by acting as a communications network. We can then each dispense with the need for conscious control over resources and rely on our own intimate knowledge of local economic conditions, and price information regarding general economic conditions. This proves that decentralized competitive systems will vastly outperform centrally planned systems.
Chapter five looks at the process of competition. Data regarding the least cost methods of satisfying consumer demand comes through the process of competition. The notion of competition as an end state, where we have attained perfect resource allocation, overlooks the importance of the actual processes by which market participants actually compete. Competition is a process of forming opinions and spreading information. It informs us regarding which alternatives are best and cheapest. Those who judge actual market outcomes with theoretical models that assume perfect information are putting the cart before the horse. Competition is the only means by which we can each acquire data on general economic conditions. Governmental bureaucrats do not simply know what the final outcomes of competition are supposed to be. This data is particular to the process of competition itself. We should therefore be wary of those who complain that markets do not deliver perfect competition based on perfect information. Markets are our best source on the data in question, albeit an imperfect one.
In chapter seven Hayek lays out the arguments that some make in favor of Socialism. Some claim that greater equality in incomes is worth the loss of efficiency that is inherent to Socialism. Others want to maintain some degree of free choice- consumer and occupational choice. Yet others want to restrict even these areas of personal choice. Socialists face a problem in trying to show how socialist planners could plan production in terms of satisfying consumer desires, without market prices. The labor theory of value did not explain actual behavior, but was instead an "a search after some illusory substance of value. Since we lack objective measures of the importance of the needs of different individuals, central planners face "a task which far exceeds the powers of individual men". In chapter eight Hayek points to specific informational problems that Socialist planners face. Of course, he deals with information in earlier chapters. But this chapter leads into the next. Chapter nine deals with proposals to simulate market competition under socialism. Hayek mentions that even if central planners have full knowledge of economic conditions, the calculations concerning the allocation of all resources is too difficult to perform. After dealing with the absurd notion of full information, Hayek turns to three issues. First, Socialists once aimed at overcoming the results of markets. Now they accept the results of market competition as a standard to aim at. Second, an omniscient and omnipresent dictator would also require omnipotence to plan an economy using their omniscience. Even if they had omniscience, the central planners would still have to work through an imperfect bureaucracy. So the notion of omnipotence is absurd. We must look at the actual bureaucratic problems that planners will face. Third, Perhaps, in a world of unchanging data Socialist planners could arrive at efficient prices for the means of production through trial and error. But, with changing data, the plans of the authority will never match the decisions of the 'man on the spot'. Hayek discusses incentive problems and knowledge problems at length, and also mentions the potential for abuse by concentrating power into the hands a few. This is the subject of his book "The Road to Serfdom".
The other chapters are not what I would call classics, but are generally of a high quality. Chapter eleven deals with an aspect of trade cycle theory. Chapter six (Free Enterprise and Competitive Order) deals with the limits of market and government and the influence of ideas. This is not Hayek's best effort in explaining these matters. Chapter one (Individualism, True and False) is much better. It discusses the drive to control individual action based on alleged notions of reason. True individualism requires humility towards the processes by which societal order emerges, not as a result of deliberate planning by any particular individual, but as an unintended consequence of self-serving individual interaction.
These are ideas that far too few appreciate. This book is key to understanding the way Hayek thought about social problems in general. The chapters might seem disjointed in the table of contents, but they have much in common. Anyone serious about understanding how society works should read this book, especially if they tend to disagree with the author's pro free market stance. Hayek is one of the worthiest opponents that Socialists face, and this book is one of his best.

My favorite essays included: Earth Without a Moon, Why is the sky blue, What is the most venomous animal, How did it all begin, Are we alone, What happens to us when we die, Can people be put in cold storage, and of course the essay from which the books gets its name: Can anything travel faster than light? This book is highly recommended for those curious minds out there that might not have quite the scientific background.

Incredibly good sequel to Nature's Curiosity Shop

This book, which I have ordered, came to me by a stroke of luck. I was passing through the library and this interesting book jumped out at me. Of course the titles that the Zimmerman's have used are excellent and resistance is futile, so I ended up reading one of my favourite books of all time.

Early at the battle of Winchester; and on October 19 Sheridan again defeated Early at the battle of Cedar Creek.

President Abraham Lincoln’s re­-election spelled doom for the Con­federacy. Sherman prepared to march; Major General George H. Thomas waited for Hood; Major General Edward R. S. Canby prepared to attack Mobile; Sheridan dominated the Shenandoah Valley; the end neared.

The Real U.S. Grant

The twenty-six (and counting!) volumes comprising all the known extant writings of Ulysses Grant are indeed a remarkable example of published primary source material. While every volume contains much material that is admittedly of trivial importance to even the most rabid Grant scholar, each book in this series also contains fascinating nuggets of information not found anywhere else. Anyone with even a casual interest in USG is sure to discover something worth reading in every volume. In gathering together not only all of Grant's known correspondence, but relevant peripheral documents, the editors of this series are doing a truly Herculean job and deserve great commendation.

I have only a few quibbles with the series. The first involves something over which the editors had no control. I refer to the fact that, in the first few volumes (particularly Volume One,) Grant's descendants insisted that certain passages in Grant's letters to his fiancee-turned-wife Julia Dent that had been crossed out (either by Julia or other family members) not be published. This idiotic decision is not only extremely frustrating for the reader, but, ironically, damaging to Grant himself. By all accounts, the deleted passages contain nothing that could be considered detrimental to Grant's good name, but by leaving them out, these descendants unwittingly gave the impression that there was something to hide. Hopefully, in an "Appendix" volume at the end of the series, the editors will be sporting enough to include whatever deleted passages can be transcribed, and the series will at last be considered complete.

My other complaints about this series are more minor. While each volume contains copious, and frequently illuminating, footnotes, the editors occasionally fail to provide enough context. That is to say, a brief, undetailed letter of Grant's will frequently be followed by several pages of footnotes providing other letters and documents on the same subject, without giving much information explaining what, exactly, it all meant. The reader who is not already fully informed on the subject being addressed is sometimes left feeling confused about what exactly is being discussed, and what its relevance may have been.

Another drawback is, simply, the price. While these books are certainly handsomely--and obviously expensively--printed and bound, those of us who study history as a hobby rather than as a profession could wish for editions that were more cheaply done, and thus more affordable. Unless you are fortunate enough to have access to a good academic library, these extremely expensive (even when you buy second-hand) volumes are simply out-of-reach for many people. That's a great pity, because in these books is an "insider's view" of Grant that does not fully come across in any regular biography.

A masterful achievement

"The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant" is a project begun in 1962 for the purpose of publishing all the known letters written by Ulysses S. Grant. Volume one was published in 1967 and there are now twenty-four volumes in the series. People who follow Grant's career are aware of the inestimable value of this project. The Papers contain all known correspondence written by Grant and letters received by him. The editing of the series is unparalleled and the volumes represent primary source material at its apex.
Those who believe Grant was a "drunkard" or a "butcher" should read his own words, which show Grant's humor, pathos and unique personality. Masterfully edited by John Y. Simon, these volumes are a "must have" for anyone with an interest in U.S. Grant as a general, a politician and as a man
