the source

I was a competitive powerlifter in college (never on the sauce), setting state records in the State of Alabama in the early to mid 1980's. I and my fellow powerlifters used this book as our primary source for increasing our individual lifts as well as our totals. Just looking at it today made me flash back to a time in my life when my strength was greatest.

An absolute must for the powerlifter
By James Luidl
Along with John Kuc's "Kuc Speaks" this is one book on powerlifting that you must read. Written in the early 80's it has remained one of the most informative books on the subject of powerlifting ever written. Eastern bloc lifters who now dominate the sport consider this their Bible. Dr. Squat has talked of updating it, but when taken together with his powerlifting manual on his website at [...], you have a complete system for putting up champion caliber totals.

The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant, Volume 28: November 1, 1876 - September 30, 1878From Southern Illinois University Press

In his eighth and final annual message to Congress, Ulysses S. Grant reminded the nation that it was his "fortune or misfortune, to be called to the office of Chief Executive without any previous political training." The electoral crisis that dominated Grant’s last months in office left little room for political error. On November 7, 1876, Democrat Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote, but Republican Rutherford B. Hayes could claim the presidency by a single electoral vote if he captured all disputed electors from Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Oregon. Uncertainty gave way to deadlock as the crisis deepened. Grant’s mail included a steady trickle of anonymous threats. In late January 1877, Grant signed a bill creating an electoral commission to end the dispute. Hayes won all disputed electors and succeeded Grant without incident.

Out of the White House, without a settled home, the Grants spent two months visiting family and friends before embarking on their long-planned European tour. On May 17, Grant left Philadelphia aboard the steamer Indiana. When he arrived at Liverpool, crowds thronged the docks and streets to give him a hero’s welcome, and Londoners welcomed Grant with similar enthusiasm. In July, the Grants crossed to Belgium, traveled through Germany, and summered in the Swiss Alps and the lakes of northern Italy. Back in Great Britain, they toured Scotland and northern England, then visited daughter Ellen Grant Sartoris at Warsash, the Sartoris country home near Southampton.

Grant spent November in Paris, later writing "no American would stay in Paris if he found himself the only one of his countrymen there." The Grants wintered in the Mediterranean, sailing down the Italian coast to Sicily, where they spent Christmas, then to Alexandria, and a long trip up the Nile. The party toured the Holy Land, visited Constantinople and Athens, and spent a month in Italy. After another month in Paris, the Grants were off to Holland, Germany, Scandinavia, Russia, Austria, and Switzerland, exploring the Alps again before returning to Paris in September, 1878, to ponder their next move.

Abroad and out of office, Grant freely talked about the war and his presidency. Several interviews stirred controversy in America and stoked talk of a third term in 1880, despite Grant’s own protestation: "I never wanted to get out of a place as much as I did to get out of the Presidency." The Grants had seen Europe. Now they faced a choice between home and a journey to distant Asia.

Simon and Co. Carry On!
By Gloria Mundi
The twenty-plus volumes comprising all the known extant writings of Ulysses Grant are indeed a remarkable example of published primary source material. While every volume contains much material that is admittedly of trivial importance to even the most rabid Grant scholar, each book in this series also contains fascinating nuggets of information not found anywhere else. Anyone with even a casual interest in USG is sure to discover something worth reading in every volume. In gathering together not only all of Grant's known correspondence, but relevant peripheral documents, the editors of this series are doing a truly Herculean job and deserve great commendation.

I have only a few quibbles with the series. The first involves something over which the editors had no control. I refer to the fact that, in the first few volumes (particularly Volume One,) Grant's descendants insisted that certain passages in Grant's letters to his fiancee-turned-wife Julia Dent that had been crossed out (either by Julia or other family members) not be published. This idiotic decision is not only extremely frustrating for the reader, but, ironically, damaging to Grant himself. By all accounts, the deleted passages contain nothing that could be considered detrimental to Grant's good name, but by leaving them out, these descendants unwittingly gave the impression that there was something to hide. Hopefully, in an "Appendix" volume at the end of the series, the editors will be sporting enough to include whatever deleted passages can be transcribed, and the series will at last be considered complete.

My other complaints about this series are more minor. While each volume contains copious, and frequently illuminating, footnotes, the editors occasionally fail to provide enough context. For instance, a brief, undetailed letter of Grant's will frequently be followed by several pages of footnotes providing other letters and documents on the same subject, without giving much information explaining what, exactly, it all meant. The reader who is not already fully informed on the subject being addressed is sometimes left feeling confused about what exactly is being discussed, and what its relevance may have been. In the "Calendar" section of miscellaneous material found in the back of each volume, letters and documents by, to, or related to Grant are also occasionally irritatingly cryptic and mysterious.

Another drawback is, simply, the price. While these books are certainly handsomely--and obviously expensively--printed and bound, those of us who study history as a hobby rather than as a profession could wish for editions that were more cheaply done, and thus more affordable. Unless you are fortunate enough to have access to a good academic library, these extremely expensive (even when you buy second-hand) volumes are simply out-of-reach for many people. That's a great pity, because in these books is an "insider's view" of Grant that does not fully come across in any regular biography.

Learning from the Histories of Rhetoric: Essays in Honor of Winifred Bryan Horner, by Professor Theresa Enos Ph.D.

This collection of eleven essays honors Winifred Bryan Horner for her sustained effort to establish that the special nature of rhetoric and composition leads the discipline to theorize practice and to apply theory as its central acts.

Theresa Enos urges those in the field to learn from the histories of rhetoric in order to draw rhetoric and composition together and to understand theory in practice and the practice of theory as conceptualized by Aristotle. Rhetoric, the oldest of the humanities, has practice as its very basis, but English faculty who teach history of rhetoric courses often think that studying rhetorical history for its own sake is enough. In addition, the typical history course taught in English departments is nearly identical to the traditional ones that have been taught in speech and communication departments for three-quarters of a century. Enos believes that using the infrastructure of courses taught in speech does not meet the needs of teachers of written communication.

Learning from the Histories of Rhetoric is based on the problems Enos has perceived when history has not been connected to teaching, learning, using. Her goal is both to honor Winifred Horner, who has spent her career in trying to make usable connections between rhetoric and composition, and to feature well-known historians of rhetoric who can translate what they have learned about the history of rhetoric into the writing classroom. As future teachers of writing take courses in history as part of core curricula, Enos believes this volume can be a concise complement to the thousands of pages of history and theory they will be reading—that it can be a resource guide that will generate and enrich discussion, further suggestions for teaching, and heighten awareness of the uses of history for writing teachers.

Enos has organized the essays into two parts: "Studying the Histories of Rhetoric" and "Teaching the Histories of Rhetoric." Richard Lloyd-Jones begins part 1 by interweaving personal and professional history as a pedagogue who consciously and explicitly uses the history of rhetoric. Thomas P. Miller makes a strong argument for broadening our knowledge of rhetorical traditions and deepening our perceptions of what they can mean to teaching. Donald C. Stewart suggests how we might reach into our history to find a philosophical model for present-day college rhetoric and composition programs. And Edward P. J. Corbett charts the history closest to teachers and administrators in writing programs.

In part 2, Susan C. Jarratt concentrates on Sappho to demonstrate that women’s ways of thinking and writing can differ from men’s. Marjorie Curry Woods shows that writing pedagogy from medieval times can be useful to current classroom strategies. Both Jean Dietz Moss and Kathleen E. Welch focus on dialectic, Moss showing how closely dialectic and rhetoric worked together in the Renaissance and Welch continuing the argument for including dialectic in college writing courses. Richard Leo Enos and S. Michael Halloran delineate strong relationships between classical rhetoric and two present-day approaches to writing: peer collaboration and declamation.

Grafters and Goo Goos: Corruption and Reform in Chicago, by James L. Merriner

Chicago’s reputation for corruption is the basis of local and national folklore and humor. Grafters and Goo Goos: Corruption and Reform in Chicago, 1833–2003 unfolds the city’s notorious history of corruption and the countervailing reform struggles that largely failed to clean it up. More than a regional history of crime in politics, this wide-ranging account of governmental malfeasances traces ongoing public corruption and reform to its nineteenth-century democratic roots. Former Chicago journalist James L. Merriner reveals the battles between corrupt politicos and ardent reformers to be expressions of conflicting class, ethnic, and religious values.

From Chicago’s earliest years in the 1830s, the city welcomed dollar-chasing businessmen and politicians, swiftly followed by reformers who strived to clean up the attendant corruption. Reformers in Chicago were called “goo goos,” a derisive epithet short for “good-government types.” Grafters and Goo Goos contends a certain synergy defined the relationship between corruption and reform. Politicians and reformers often behaved similarly, their separate ambitions merging into a conjoined politics of interdependency wherein the line between heroes and villains grew increasingly faint. The real story, asserts Merriner, has less to do with right against wrong than it does with the ways the cultural backgrounds of politicians and reformers steered their own agendas, animating and defining each other by their opposition.

Drawing on original and archival research, Merriner identifies constants in the struggle between corruption and reform amid a welter of changing social circumstances and customs—decades of alternating war and peace, hardships and prosperity. Three areas of reform and resistance are identified: structural reform of the political system to promote honesty and efficiency, social reform to provide justice to the lower classes, and moral reform to combat vice. “In the matter of corruption and reform, the constants might be stronger than the variables,” writes Merriner in the Preface. “The players, rules, and scorekeepers change, but not the essential game.”

Complemented by eighteen illustrations, Grafters and Goo Goos is rife with shocking and amusing anecdotes and peppered with the personalities of famous muckrakers, bootleggers, mayors, and mobsters. While other studies have profiled infamous Chicago corruption cases and figures such as Al Capone and Richard J. Daley, this is the first to provide an overview appropriate for historians and general readers alike. In examining Chicago’s notorious saga of corruption and reform against a backdrop of social history, Merriner calls attention to our constant problems of both civic and national corruption and contributes to larger discussions about the American experiment of democratic self-government.

From Booklist
If there is a single theme in this meticulously researched book, it is that "politicians tended to abuse their power while reformers tended to abuse their own, all while pursuing their own conceptions of self-interest as well as of the common good." Merriner examines their roles against a backdrop of social history in what he labels "a blend of anecdotes and analysis, a one-volume overview of a very big story." He defines corruption as the use of improper political influence for private gain and reform as the effort to prevent such activity. Merriner reminds readers that no alderman, committeeman, or candidate since 1964 has been shot, pistol-whipped, kidnapped, dumped in the sanitary canal, or encased in concrete: "This is progress." He argues that rather than attempt to reduce the amount of corruption with stricter laws, the remedy might lie in addressing the other side of the equation: reduce the amount of government. This book is a bit more about corruption than reform, but then so is Chicago. That's what makes the book so absorbing. George Cohen

Review
“Grafters and Goo Goos captures the ebb and flow of the patented form of chicanery and outlandishness that has tarred the city of Chicago as arguably the most corrupt place on earth. This richly woven tapestry of anecdotal material is supported by colorful quotes, insightful observations, and a world-weary sense that Chicago is whatever it is, and will always be. Merriner is a wonderful writer whose seamless prose moves the story along.”—Richard Lindberg, Chicago historian and author of To Serve and Collect: Chicago Politics and Police Corruption from the Lager Beer Riot to the Summerdale Scandal, 1855–1960

“James L. Merriner, biographer of Dan Rostenkowski and veteran observer of the Chicago political scene, is superbly qualified to write this sweeping history of corruption and reform in the Windy City. Bits and pieces of this fascinating story are already well known, but Merriner’s achievement is to provide a detailed chronological narrative in one well-written volume.”—Roger Biles, author of Richard J. Daley: Politics, Race, and the Governing of Chicago

All Politics is Local: How the Game Was and Is Played
By Borowy26
This is a fairly good survey of the political landscape in the City of Chicago by a veteran journalist. It tries to address the perennial question, to paraphrase Alderman Mathias "Paddy" Bauler, of "Why ain't Chicago ready for reform?"

The book is concerned with political movements and the efforts of progressives and reformers to do battle with boodlers and spoilsmen. In the political language of Chicago, good government types are derided as "goo goos" for their infantile naivete. As Merriner points out, several successful politicins had to make it clear to the precinct workers that they were not reformers in order to secure votes from party regulars.

Given the number of candidates and elections to be treated, there are more than a few errors as to dates. For example, Big Bill Thompson was not elected alderman in 1902. He was elected to the Cook County Board of Commissioners that year. Similarly, Thompson was the sponsor of a reception for expelled US Senator Billy Lorimer, but not while serving as mayor. The welcome home rally occurred earlier. State's Attorney John Wayman did not resign his office in 1912. He chose to run for governor rather than to seek reelection as prosecutor and he lost the Republican nomination to the incumbent governor, Charles S. Deneen in 1912. Wayman left office upon the expiration of his term.

To quote Tip O'Neill, "All politics is local." Merriner does a respectably good job of trying to explain the political culture that is Chicago. The reform elements and progressives fought the good fight, but were outflanked by the grafters at almost every turn. The author is to be complimented for analyzing reams of archival materials, including meeting minutes, reports and correspondence from numerous civic organizations.

This book is an entertaining primer on practical politics in the City of Big Shoulders. It is more fun than stuffing a ballot box and less dangerous than serving as an election judge in one of the river wards.

Reality history primer
By ed hammer
The story of US government and politics is full of good guys, bad guys and compromises. Merriner's book describes those connections as they relate to Chicago, Illinois. His book is a great primer for understanding the Illinois culture of corruption but it is also a story that is comparable to the history of all 50 states. "Grafters and Goo Goos" makes a great bookshelf companion to "One Hundred Percent Guilty, How and Insider Links the Death of Six Children to the Politics of Illinois Convicted Governor George Ryan" also available on amazon.

Ice Cream for Breakfast : If You Follow All The Rules, You MIss Half the Fun, by Leslie G. Levine

This charming illustrated gift book strives to help readers capture those moments of unrestrained self-indulgence and of pure joy that are often gained through appreciating life's smallest pleasures. It's about assuming a childlike optimism and getting away with fun. It's about knowing a thing or two when it comes to breaking the rules. It's about treating yourself to what really matters. Our ability to "bend the rules" --to shift life's collective paradigms - is what enables us to weather many of the changes we confront on a daily basis. Bending the rules --or, in some cases, forgoing them completely --gives us a fresh perspective, shakes things up a bit, and forces us to see life through a slightly different lens. Altering the rules leads to ideas that ultimately can reshape the way we see ourselves. Breaking the rules can also be the perfect antidote to the powerful force of stress. A lot of the rules we follow as adults are old. We learned them a long time ago, and in many cases, what served us well as kids doesn't necessarily serve us as well now. Of course some rules we couldn't live without like looking both ways before we cross the street or wearing seatbelts, which are good rules. But what about not getting dessert unless you've finished all your dinner? Or always having to go to bed at a certain time? Instead of giving ourselves permission to be joyful and do the things that make us happy, we arbitrarily create rules that prevent us enjoying as much as we can. So instead of lingering in the tub, we bathe as fast as we can. Instead of celebrating our own birthdays, we minimize the day and let it pass almost unnoticed. These made-up rules may give us some order in the short-term but ultimately short-change what could be a more fulfilling and fun life. Sometimes the easiest way to break these rules is to look at life through a child's eyes. In all 52 chapters of Ice Cream for Breakfast, author Leslie Levine has incorporated universal experiences of childhood and rendered those memories into strategies that can enrich our lives as adults. In "Do One Thing At a Time," for instance, readers learn how to slow down a little. In some cases, she spotlights a rule that's particularly steeped in tradition like "Talk to Strangers." In other chapters, rules resurface and are given a new twist like "Keep Your Eyes on Your Own Paper" which addresses the importance of listening to one's own voice. In its entirity, ce Cream for Breakfast will introduce the reader to new ways to counter the pesky tyrannies that can sabotage one's quest for happiness and fulfillment. From enjoying a big bowl of Rocky Road for breakfast to reveling in the beauty of one's toes, the 52 short chapter essays all reveal a simple truth: you really have to take care of yourself if you're going to take care of others. Break the rules and have fun!

From the Back Cover
How often do you break the rules? Not often enough!

Remember when you were a kid and your life was governed by rule after rule? Clean your room. Eat your vegetables. Don't talk back. But remember too, how good it felt to assert your independence now and again and rebel against those rules? After all, misbehaving and being bad could make you feel pretty good.

In Ice Cream for Breakfast, author Leslie Levine serves up 52 ways to break the rules in order bust out of the ho-hum routine of daily life. According to Levine, breaking the rules can give you a fresh perspective, shake things up a bit, and force you to see life through a slightly different lens.

Filled with insight, humor, and honest wisdom, Ice Cream for Breakfast will remind you that it's OK to forego the expected and indulge instead in the simplest of selfish pleasures. Chapters like Stay Up Past Your Bedtime, Play in the Dirt, and Cry Over Spilled Milk give you license to break the most familiar "rules" from childhood. Other chapters encourage you to act like a kid again. Sing at the Top of Your Lungs, for instance, reminds you that singing with abandon is not about how others might think you sound but how good it might make you feel. Still other chapters offer insightful interpretations of familiar words to live by. Keep Your Eyes on Your Own Paper addresses the importance of listening to your own voice rather than relying upon someone else's answers.

Ice Cream for Breakfast is a poignant little guide to countering life's pesky little tyrannies. The perfect primer on savoring the smaller moments in life, the overall message is clear: bust out of that routine, break the rules and have fun!

Giving Women Permission To Be Themselves
By Karen Asofsky
Ice Cream for Breakfast is the book that women have been waiting for. It gives readers permission to be themselves and to go beyond the silly rules that inhibit well-deserved joy. Leslie Levine is an advocate for all of us good girls who need permission to circumvent the rules we feel bound by even when they no longer serve us. Her book is liberating in that she gives us permission to do and feel what our gut has told us all along. Bravo for Ice Cream for Breakfast!!!

Even the one who makes the rules needs to break them!
By MTP
This book was a welcome respite in a busy week filled with working too hard, keeping up with kid's schedules and trying to have a life all at the same time. For busy parents trying to keep everything together and set rules and expectations for their kids, it is great fun to read Ms. Levine's witty , thoughtful and often touching take on how to approach life with fun and grace. Her advice on how to do the unexpected, break the rules we set, usually because it is just how we think we should act, and create special moments for ourselves and our families and friends is a wonderful antidote to stress and tension. I am ordering more to give to friends who really need this book!

Action Writing: Jack Kerouac's Wild Form, by Michael Hrebeniak

Action Writing: Jack Kerouac’s Wild Form connects the personal and creative development of the Beat generation’s famous icon with societal changes in postwar America. Michael Hrebeniak asserts that Jack Kerouac’s “wild form”—writing that is free of literary, grammatical, and syntactical conventions—moves within an experimental continuum across the arts to generate a Dionysian sense of writing as raw process. Action Writing highlights how Kerouac made concrete his 1952 intimation of “something beyond the novel” by assembling ideas from Beat America, modernist poetics, action painting, bebop, and subterranean oral traditions. Hrebeniak further explores how the Cold War provided political potency for Kerouac’s assertion of the Blake-Whitman lineage of poet as seer and chronicler, by which language itself becomes the instrument of revelation.

Action Writing identifies the artistic resources, American bohemianism, and protest traditions at the foreground of Kerouac’s creative emergence, culturally framed as an ongoing existential regeneration within a deteriorating environment. Hrebeniak surveys Kerouac’s early shifts in narrative organization and performative writing, examines the limitless multiplicity of Neal Cassady in Visions of Cody to forge what Charles Olson would call a “projective” model of the novel, and addresses the question of interpretative methodologies for the convergence of fictive techniques.

This study also traces Kerouac’s personal trajectory from confident radicalism to conservative entrenchment, assesses his spontaneous prose within the intersection of orality and notation, and locates Kerouac’s phenomenological approach to consciousness and memory in relation to open forms of literary modernism and the New York School.

Geared to scholars and students of American literature, Beat studies, and creative writing, the volume places Kerouac’s writing within the context of the American art scene at mid-century. Effectively reframing the work of Kerouac and the Beat generation within the experimental modernist/postmodernist literary tradition, this probing inquiry offers a direct engagement with the social and cultural history at the foreground of Kerouac’s career from the 1940s to the late 1960s.

Review

“Michael Hrebeniak has opened up serious issues that are always overlooked—propaganda, Marcuse, Olson’s Human Universe, for starters. Hrebeniak’s assessment that ‘Kerouac’s swirling meditation on memory and recirculation of events’ is a beautiful portal swinging wide. A complete success. Many are waiting to read a work on Jack that will put a modern foundation under the old dharma shack.”—Michael McClure, poet, novelist, essayist, and playwright

“Michael Hrebeniak has written an exceptional book on Jack Kerouac, a book that melds criticism, narrative, and polemic into an entirely new alloy. It’s strange, alive, angry, and yet controlled … a magnificent book.”—Robert Macfarlane, author of Mountains of the Mind

“Michael Hrebeniak’s work is indeed rare, bringing Jack Kerouac’s work into the realm of Western aesthetics, a global arena in which to situate his considerable accomplishment. I don’t know of another scholarly work that goes as far to ground Kerouac’s Legend of Duluoz in such a wide and deep knowledge of world literatures.”—Regina Weinreich, author of The Spontaneous Poetics of Jack Kerouac

About the Author

For Academia
By R. Sherwood
That Michael Hrebeniak knows his material is undeniable. That he is also part of the forces of academia and publicity that he explains plagued Jack Kerouac is also undeniable. That he is unaware of this irony is likely also undeniable, given that he never mentions it. This irony runs through Action Writing: Jack Kerouac's Wild Form, as Hrebeniak talks about how beats, like Kerouac, disliked the way academia and popular culture seized their works, and those of their predecessors. Works that once fought against society become common topics in the dominant culture, and the subject of academic works like this book.

In a way, Action Writing: Jack Kerouac's Wild Form is not original as a book, being like any academic paper, made of a whole string of closely packed quotes from previous efforts of others and the novels it discusses. That it reveals the interrelated nature of those works, as influences of Kerouac's style is Hrebeniak's true purpose. However, he spends little time explaining these references, meaning that readers will need background in various areas, such as the books and philosophers mentioned within. I will personally point out that the fellaheen mentioned frequently are simply the Egyptian peasant class. What exactly the beats also meant in mentioning them is not directly stated, any more than the word origin I mentioned.

This book would be best used in a classroom setting, where the general subject area can be covered, in terms of beat writings and American history. It is not meant to teach the reader how to emulate Kerouac's style of action writing, meaning only to contextualize it, and compare it to its times and peers. What Hrebeniak does is find Kerouac's place in the long line of literature and philosophical tradition, as well as history, with references to his ideological borrowing from such diverse sources as the obvious jazz and Buddhism, but also Wolfe, James Joyce, Rousseau, Nietze, as well as Aristotle and many others. So many come up, that the book almost becomes a word salad, jumbled with names, theories, styles, Freud, space-time, cinematography, elegant overarching themes, masculinity, all percolated, Hrebeniak claims, through the mind of Kerouac, as he contemplated Neal Cassidy while on marijuana.

Generally, the main problem I would cite with this book is that it is rather a bit too dense for casual reading. It is very much an academic book, both in terms of literary criticism, and a historical account of Kerouac and his writing environment. This is problematic, of course, in that the author who is the topic, Kerouac, found this kind of analysis dreary, according to Hrebeniak, even. On the plus side, Hrebeniak does well in not completely shying away from problematic features of Kerouac's works, spending some time on the implications of his opinions and depictions of women and various sexual topics and actions. I recommend it, again, for classes on modern American literature, beats, hippies, postwar American suburbia or the cold war.

Little Mack: Joseph B. McCullagh of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat (New horizons in journalism), by Joseph B. McCullagh

Epitomizing the American mystique, McCullagh (or Mack as he was popularly known) was the self-made man whose name became a legend in his profession. An Irish immigrant at the age of 11, a printer, reporter, and roving correspondent, McCullagh returned to St. Louis after the Civil War, where he had worked briefly when he was 16. From this point to the end of his life in l896—a thirty-year period which forms the bulk of Mr. Clayton’s story—St. Louis was the primary stage on which his role as editor of the Globe-Democrat unfolded.

St. Louis was a crossroads through which went an unending movement of men on their way West, a bustling and burgeoning city on the eve of the American century. To this city and to the problems mirrored in its growth, McCullagh dedicated his years and his prodigious talents, provoking men to speak, sending his staff of interviewers everywhere, and heaping his abrasive prose on men and issues.

This spirited yet humorous account of “Little Mack” will appeal to all readers for its portrayal of an unforgettable man in one of our great cities in the stirring and formative years of the nation.

Missouri's Silver Age: Silversmiths of the 1800s, by Norman Mack

The result of nearly two decades of intensive research by Norman Mack and his late wife, Beatrice Davidow Mack, Missouri’s Silver Age: Silversmiths of the 1800s is a comprehensive directory of nineteenth-century Missouri silversmiths, their works, and their identifying makers’ marks. Illustrated with over one hundred photographs, this exceptional reference for historians and silver collectors showcases the Macks’ three-hundred-piece collection of Missouri silver, which includes a representative sample by nearly every known Missouri silversmith and is housed at the Missouri Historical Society in St. Louis.

Featuring more than a hundred detailed biographies of the artisans and apprentices who created handmade silver in St. Louis and Missouri during the nineteenth century, Missouri’s Silver Age also contains extensive photographs of makers’ touchmarks and of the pieces themselves, which include bowls, dishes, spoons, and ladles, as well as other household utensils and decorative items. Arranged alphabetically, the biographies reveal all known details of the business activities and locations of the silversmiths. Collectively, the entries and the illustrations shed light on the growth of enterprise in Missouri, show the impact of the individual on the developing frontier economies of the Midwest, and reveal how the production, acquisition, and possession of material goods reflected the culture and values of Americans during the 1800s.

Mack provides a brief but thorough history of silversmithing in America for novice collectors and historians, detailing the various methods used in making silver and the range of styles that were popular, providing insight into the methods of training apprentices, and explaining the effects of mechanization on the trade. Augmenting this volume are an appendix by Jo Ann Griffin on how to care for old silver, a map of the silversmiths’ primary locations, and a helpful alphabetical appendix of the silversmiths that includes illustrations of their touchmarks.

Missouri silversmiths
By ahwt
If you are interested in silver made or retailed in Missouri in the 1800s Mr. Mack's book and Helen Hunter Roach's book entitled St. Louis Silversmiths" are the only two available. Norman Mack's book covers the whole state and has updated much of the research done on St. Louis silversmiths by Mrs. Roach. That said even Mr. Mack missed some silversmiths from out state Missouri, e.g. George G. Schoolfield from Columbia, Missouri. Mr. Schoolfield died in 1868 and is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St Louis.
Mr. Mack's book has excellent biographical sketches of Missouri silversmiths and clear photographs of their marks. Mrs. Roach's book has a very interesting section on Indian trade silver and is also recommended. She also has some interesting biographical information not included in Mr. Mack's book.
The only other published material I know on St. Louis silversmiths is an exhibit catalog from the St. Louis Art Museum dated December 7, 1980-January 25, 1981, with essay by Deborah J. Binder.
