Fascinating and provocative

For over a millennium, it's been axiomatic that Queen Jezebel was Evil -- and promiscuous. Even a casual reading of the Bible reveals that the latter accusation is unfounded. Now Janet Gaines tackles the task of resurrecting the Wicked Queen's reputation; no easy task after the hatchet job the Judeo-Christian patriarchy did on Jezebel's story.
MUSIC IN THE OLD BONES discusses the endless fascination Queen Jezebel holds and provides an interesting alternative to the usual verdict upon Jezebel's character. After a thorough background of Jezebel's story as seen through the window of biblical narrative, Gaines analyzes Queen Jezebel's enduring place in popular culture.
Gaines gives us an admirable overview of a woman whose chief crime was that she was a foreigner who ran afoul of the prophet Elijah. MUSIC IN THE OLD BONES is a fascinating, provocative work. It's essential reading for anyone interested in closer study of women in the biblical tradition, and for anyone who wants to reclaim women's history.

A very nice recusitation of Jezebel's reputation

This is one of two relatively recent books on the reputation of Jezebel, the Phoenician wife of Ahab and queen of Israel. There are very few characters in the Old Testament who were more in need of rehabilitation. The second of the two, published in 2007 is "Jezebel: The Untold Story of the Bible's Harlot Queen" by Lesley Hazelton at Jezebel Untold Bibles Harlot ebook
Both books are written for the general public; however Ms. Hazleton's book makes better use of a lot of modern scholarship, especially some done by one of my professors, Dr. Deborah Appler at the Moravian Seminary. She also includes a lot of first hand experiences in the venues in which Jezebel lived.
By being the more recent, Ms. Hazleton's book benefits from new research, and it also has the advantage of being on Kindle for a nicely discounted price. A major weakness however, is that Hazleton's book does not connect her text with her notes in the Kindle version. I have to assume that the connection is also missing in the paper copy. For example, while Ms. Hazleton credits Dr. Appler, there is no note showing what Hazleton got from Appler's doctoral thesis.
There are many notes at the back of the book, ordered by chapter, but beyond that, not even by page number. If you intend to write a class paper on Jezebel, I recommend you get both books. If you are only reading for pleasure, Ms. Hazleton's book is preferred, because it gives you a first hand feeling for what Jezebel's life may have been like.
I liked Ms. Gaines' book, because it shows how the name Jezebel has been applied to personalities which have nothing whatsoever to do with the Jezebel of 1 Kings and 2 Kings. For example, in the film named "Jezebel" in which Bette Davis starred as a southern belle with a headstrong personality, the character, although brilliantly played by Ms. Davis, is nothing like the biblical character.
The value of both books is that they reveal the "paradigm shift", present throughout the Bible, which translates idolatrous behavior into sexually elicit behavior. While her enemies called her a "harlot", the facts we read say nothing of the sort. She was faithful to her husband throughout his life. And, there is reason to believe that the one story added to the narrative, the story of Naboth's vineyard, to put both her and Ahab in a bad light, was contrived. It seems far too "open" to work as a surreptitious plot.
I will give Hazleton credit for comparing Jezebel to the one character she truly appears to anticipate, Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare's play "Macbeth". I would say Jezebel even outdoes Lady Macbeth by actually carrying out the murder of Naboth, and of having no remorse whatsoever, unlike Betty Davis' character, or Lady Macbeth.
