Sometimes you have to hang out with a curmudgeon

In other books about writing, I ran into enough quotes from the creative wisdom of prolific American author John O'Hara (1905-1970) that I finally decided to seek out the source. If others thought this man's insights were worthwhile, then maybe I should read them in their original context. They were right. These pieces are worth reading and underlining. Some are even laugh-out-loud funny.
This book offers an interesting mix of stuff. 41 separate selections consist of O'Hara's lectures, speeches, forewords, published and non-published essays, and interviews. They span the decades from the 1930s through the 1960s. Writing or a specific aspect of the craft is the main topic of each. Its act and art transcend time. A full section addresses the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald. ("[He] was a RIGHT writer, and it's going to be a damned shame if the generation after mine ... and the one after that don't get to know him.") O'Hara's asides offer some of his funniest moments, too. I wish we could know what reactions he got from his initial audiences.
You may get bored if you first study the table of contents too closely. You may think that you won't want to read each selection. I recommend that you instead launch into the pages and proceed from front to back without worry. That's the only way you'll come upon the gems that speak most to you. It's all common sense material here, but someone had to actually say it or write it down. Examples of his simplicity:
"You do not think of becoming a writer; you KNOW that you are a writer, with even fewer doubts, I suspect, than the doubts that bother a young man who suspects that he should study for the priesthood." (p. 32)
"The most truly satisfactory reward a writer ever gets is the moment he holds that book in his hand and says, This is my baby." (p. 68)
"Old authors never die, they only talk for pay." (p. 71)
No, this book isn't a narrative like Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft or Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. But in their own way, O'Hara's collected lectures and essays aptly convey his approach to the craft and the profession. This volume deserves to share the writer's reference shelf with King, Lamott, and the rest. Sometimes you need to plop down beside a crusty, experienced curmudgeon and just listen. And on some days, it's easier and more inspirational to READ about writing than it is to actually sit down and WRITE. I'll bet John O'Hara would have an opinion about that, too.
