To that end, she chronicles The Scarlet Letter's critical reception, analyzes the history of Hester Prynne as a cultural icon in literature and film, rereads the canonized criticism of the novel, and offers a new reading of Hawthorne's work by rescuing marginalized interpretations from the alternative canon of women critics.
Despite the fervent protestations of scholars that women and minorities are no longer excluded from the arena of academic debate, Barlowe's investigation reveals that mainstream scholarship on The Scarlet Letter—studied as models by generations of students and teachers—remains male-dominated in its comprising population and in its attitudes and practices, which function as the source of its truth-claims. Rather than celebrating the minimal handouts of the academy to women and minorities—and of the culture that nurtures and supports the academy's continuing discrimination—Barlowe constructs a case study that reveals the "rather pitiful state of affairs at the close of the twentieth century."
By interrogating canonized assumptions, Barlowe charts new directions for Hawthorne studies and American literary studies. Through this exposé of ingrained institutional bias, perpetuated myths, and privileged critics, Barlowe provides a refigured perception of the field and state of contemporary literary scholarship.

Beginning of an Argument

This study expresses considerable outrage at the academy for its protection of male-dominated view(s) of Hawthorne's masterpiece while allegedly ignoring feminist critical approaches. This idea would be stronger if the author had spent more time explaining how this oppression manifests itself, and how it should be combatted. Perhaps I should read the book again, but the main idea I take away from it after one read as to the manifestation is the idea that, in the novel, Hester Prynne is the object of the male gaze or male-dominated society. There are other ways of looking at her, or other ways of perceiving the novel, which are suggested by the nearly two hundred fifty journal articles by female scholars cited in the book's footnotes, and yet we really don't go very deeply into any of them, and we don't know what would prevent the author, as professor, from teaching any of them in her classes. Indeed, there is little argument as to why the very existence of so many presumably feminist articles is not evidence of an openness among academic presses and journals (and thus, the academy more generally) to other points of view. Instead of going into this interesting and provocative topic, the author chooses to spend much of the last half of the book talking about movies that have been made of the novel, apparently because the point of view in the films is necessarily different from that which Hawthorne gives us: the image of a "sinful" woman standing in the public gaze (one which includes housewives), and which, by the end of the novel is an image transformed into something more positive. This is fine; we don't need to stick with the book, if our purpose is to explore cinematic points of view. But we do need to be clear about the ultimate goal: is it about how The Scarlet Letter is taught? Or is it to explore the cinematic contrasts? Can the connection be made clearer?
