The Finest Collection of Fredric Brown's Mystery Stories

Carnival of Crime is a choice collection of Fredric Brown's crime and mystery stories. Editors Francis M. Nevins, Jr. and Martin H. Greenberg have culled the best from Brown's previous collections to put together this retrospective of Brown's career in crime writing. Even if the stories are a bit uneven they are all above average quality and, in some cases, truly great. Brown was noted for his ability to write the short-short and that form is represented well with "Nightmare in Yellow," "Granny's Birthday," "Hobbyist," and "Town Wanted." Brown is equally capable at medium and longer length, espically with "Little Apple Hard to Peel" and "Don't Look Behind You". Also included is a novellette, "The Case of the Dancing Sandwiches," which is a Brown rarity as it was reprinted only once before as a 10-cent Dell paperback in 1951. Bill Pronzini has a lengthy and very informative introduction, "Dreamer in Paradox," and editor Nevins, Jr. includes a comprehensive checklist of Brown's fiction as an appendix to the volume.
